The Story Behind Peace One Day – Celebrate on September 21

Jeremy Gilley is an independent documentary filmmaker and the founder and chairman of Peace One Day. Frustrated by the amount of violence he witnessed in the world, Gilley decided to make a film about peace. It was then that he realized there was no day dedicated to peace and he set out to create one. Gilley traveled with world and met with political leaders to discuss the idea of a world peace day with a fixed calendar date of September 21st. Peace One Day was officially launched at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1999. On September 7, 2001 a global cease-fire was unanimously adopted in the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York establishing the United Nations International Day of Peace as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This would be a day where residents of war-torn countries could gain access to vaccinations and food distribution that was impossible during a state of war. Last year an estimated 100 million people participated in Peace Day. 1.4 million people were vaccinated in Afghanistan. This year's goal is 1.8 million vaccinations. Peace day has been adopted by every member state of the United Nations. It is supported by Angelina Golie, Paul McCartney, Dali Lama, Annie Lennox, Kate Nash, David Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Martin of Coldplay, James Morrison, Ben and Jerry, Christian Slater, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, John Legend, Nobel Peace Laureate Shimon Peres, Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan at UN Headquarters and more. You have a few days to plan a way to get behind Peace Day and help it grow. My goal is to do something to create peace in my world and to give my students extra credit for participating in Peace Day and writing about it. What will you do to make peace on September 21? Log your commitment on their website. Peace.

  1. Thanks for sharing this video Ms. Z. I am so grateful for your idea to make this extra credit. It made me think. I am so critical and judgemental of my roomate/bestfriend. Always picking her apart, mostly quietly in my own head. And also making myself miserable because of it. So today, on Peace One Day, I will excercise acceptance and love. I have many habits that do nothing more than make myself miserable. Habits I am tryng to change. To me the email you sent us about this extra credit project was a Goddess shot, another chance to improve my life. Thank you. Debra Grant

  2. Thanks Ms. Z
This video was an eye opener, it helped me see that we all suffer one way or another. Being in a shelter ,I have put aside my pride and my ego
and just practiced empathy and love .

  3. Hi Taneisha and Teresa, thanks for participating in the project. Imagine if we practiced this every day. It would surely make a difference in someone’s life…if only your own. Peace.

  4. Man that was beautiful and true What Lovette said i could’nt of said it any better. I like the Initial Idea that Jeramy came up with in order if only just to get People Humans who has no defense or Offense in getting the Aide, in medical attention for themselfs and children. Peace day in our term is Cease fire but Hell there would’nt have to be a cease fire if there was’nt a war Better yet Sacrificial killing of anyone “Women, Man or Child.Who’s just trying to survive in t6here own Country even before the war So who has a caring heart to put it “Unjust Killing. to a end.
