This video is about a movie being made from a movement. There’s some interesting footage of people in action at a grass roots level. I have long wanted to be the kind of person who makes a difference but it seems I was always getting in my own way.

I didn’t always know that’s what I was doing but as I look back on the past with the knowledge and experience I have now, I know…”It was all me, every bit of it me.”

I proclaim that 2010 is going to be an exception to the rule. If there’s a shift going on (and I do believe there is) I want to be a part of it.

I have three goodies for you and each one will contribute to galvanizing your mind and preparing you get out of your own way and take action on your dreams and desires:

Below Barbara Walters interviews Harrison Ford about his movie career and how he was rejected for the role of Hans Solo. “George (Lucas) wanted new faces and apparently I was an old face, even then”, he said. Apparently, Harrison Ford was also not the first choice for Indiana Jones either.

If you like a story about going against the odds and fighting for justice, you might enjoy William Kunstler: Disturbing the Universe. The film opened today at the Nu Art in Los Angeles. Gary Goldstein of the LA Times calls it a “superior documentary” with “terrific archival footage from a range of seminal civil rights events.”

Filmmakers Emily Kunstler and Sarah Kuntsler explore the life of their father, the late radical civil rights lawyer. In the 1960s and 70s, William Kuntsler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr. and represented the famed “Chicago 8″ activists who protested the Vietnam War. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or when the American Indian Movement stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer.

To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most reviled members of society, including rapists and assassins. This powerful film not only recounts the historic causes that Kunstler fought for; it also reveals a man that even his own daughters did not always understand, a man who risked public outrage and the safety of his family so that justice could serve all.

Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat take time for a behind the scenes interview about Drew Barrymore’s “Whip It” at the Toronto International Film Festival. This interview captures the spirit of roller derby which includes team spirit, feminism, fun, diversity and a DIY culture.

Page talks about how much she loved the “Whip It” script and working with director, Drew Barrymore. She especially likes how the movie sends a positive message for young women to accept themselves as they are.

“We have a constant saturation in the media, especially with stories about women that involve a lot of judgment and a lot of nastiness” Page said.

“Here’s an atmosphere where women…can be really aggressive and that’s okay…but also have this sense of camaraderie, you know; beat the crap out of each other and then go have beers afterwards, and laugh about it and to really be there for each other and to have a world that’s just judgementless. And that’s pretty nice.”

I agree, that is pretty nice. That’s why it’s worth it to go see this movie and take a young woman that you care about.

This motivational speech was delivered by Al Pacino to a fictional football team in a Hollywood movie, Any Given Sunday, directed by Oliver Stone. If you listen carefully, it’s a speech about living life to it’s fullest, giving your best and working as a team with those around you.

If you listen carefully, it’s a speech about living life to it’s fullest, giving your best and working as a team with those around you.

Here are some highlights from the speech:

We are in hell right now,
….we can fight our way
back into the light.
We can climb out of hell.
One inch, at a time.

….You know when you get old in life
things get taken from you.
That’s, that’s part of life.
But, you only learn that when you start losing stuff.

You find out that life is just a game of inches.
So is football.
Because in either game
life or football
the margin for error is so small.
I mean
one half step too late or too early
you don’t quite make it.
One half second too slow or too fast
and you don’t quite catch it.

The inches we need are everywhere around us.

They are in every break of the game
every minute, every second.

…when we add up all those inches
that’s going to make the fucking difference
between WINNING and LOSING
between LIVING and DYING.

I’ll tell you this
in any fight
it is the guy (ed. note: or gal) who is willing to die
who is going to win that inch.
And I know
if I am going to have any life anymore
it is because, I am still willing to fight, and die for that inch

because that is what LIVING is.
The six inches in front of your face.

The movie highlights snippets of stories that happened along her career including work with Bob Hope, time in a symphony orchestra and a close-up of some of Diller’s artwork. I curled up in my recliner with my tabby cat and watched on my laptop.

I forgot how much of an impact Phyllis Diller had on my life. And I’m absolutely positive that my mom and grandma had to have seen her, it’s almost like they stole her moves.

To think, I was at her mansion a few years ago and I didn’t even fully realize it then. It was quite amazing. One of the things that stood out: Diller has a huge portrait of Bob Hope in her entryway.

One of my favorite things in the house was the Phyllis Diller art piece made with random household goods like soup cans and plastic curlers. Diller had it in one of the front rooms propped up against a fireplace. I’ll share a few photos here just for fun. Including one of me and Dr. Kate posing in Diller’s wig and costume room. What a treat that was.

I enjoyed the movie Goodnight We Love You with Phyllis Diller by Gregg Barson. It was good for lots of laughs and the story of Diller’s life is pretty inspiring. Diller is quite organized and has a method to her craft, she shares all of that in the movie which is altogether enlightening and endearing. Here’s a snippet of the movie from YouTube.
