Galvanized Facebook Friday – 05-27-11 – Pride and Coming Out Goes Beyond “Gay”

On Sunday I had the pleasure of roller skating the entire route of the Long Beach Pride Parade. Over the years, this event has increased in attendance dramatically, it is now the second largest event in the city behind the Long Beach Grand Prix. Thousands of Long Beach residents including politicians, police, fire and family come out to show support for this event and it was a blast to be smack dab in the middle of all the excitement for hours on end. I skated along with the students, faculty and staff of Long Beach City College and we all wore "Safe Zone" t-shirts. The vibe of the event was about unity, acceptance and love and being true to who you are. Pride goes beyond being gay or straight, pride is the willingness to come out of our socially constructed shell and dare to be authentic. At least that's what it means for me. I've been teaching at Long Beach City College for close to 10 years and I feel fortunate to have such a great job. During the beginning of my time at LBCC I was very cautious about stepping outside the box and overly co-dependent and concerned with fitting in and being a people-pleaser. Over the years I have been teaching about co-dependency and I discovered that I am more effective as an instructor when I am just human, when I don't try to play a role and be fake but instead try to be of service to the people in my classrooms. Ten years ago I might have been afraid that someone would see me in the Pride parade. The phrase "what will people think?" unconsciously ran my life but now, I am "Galvanized".  Attending the Pride parade alongside my colleagues and former students was my way of coming out of my "college instructor" shell and allowing myself to just be. Yes, I dance. Yes, I like music. Yes, I love diversity and color and crowds. No, that's not anything to be ashamed of and today I am not which in my opinion is cause for celebration. There was plenty of music and dancing at the parade and lots of Lady GaGa being pumped out of loudspeakers. But the part that stood out to me most was the amazing crowd. Wow, talk about high energy. I began the parade route at Ocean and Temple. As we progressed down the route the crowd was more dense and at one point the crowd was spilling over into the street which made for a cozy, crowd-meets-parade feeling. When we turned the corner at Los Alamitos and Ocean there were hundreds and hundreds of people lining the streets and sidewalks and many of them were screaming, smiling, dancing and taking photos and video. It was so exciting to skate around and high-five people along the route and I even took some photos of the crowd as I moved down Ocean Blvd. I posted the entire photo gallery on Picasa if you'd like to see some of what went on there. Regardless of whether you have a Pride Parade where you live, please dare to be yourself.  Ultimately, it helps us all.

Galvanized Facebook Friday 05-13-11 -Being the Light and Having Fun Doing It

The week started with a bang on Saturday morning at Agape Toastmasters. The theme was Servant Leadership, a topic I'm very interested in exploring yet intimidated by at the same time. My understanding of servant leadership is going through a revision process. I used to think servant leaders were people like Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Ghandi or Mother Teresa. But since I've been reading Edwene Gaines book, Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity, I've also been challenging my concept of giving and being of service. My new understanding is that each person is born with a gift and an opportunity to hone that gift.  In order to be of service, it is our responsibility to share that gift. Here's a video of what servant leadership means to me at this time. During this fabulous meeting we also had two speeches. One was about the terror that lives in our collective conscious and why we need to heal that terror if we ever hope to have peace. The speech was titled "Osama in My Heart" by Florentine Christian. The second speech was by Michael Maitre on the topic of how when we become our authentic self, we are of service to others because we expand our ability to give and receive joy and compassion. My mind was spinning with the thoughts of what all this meant and I had to contain the fear welling within me, the resistance to truly absorbing and acting on this information. Choosing to be a servant leader seems like a big scary job...at least if you listen to the ego. But I think many people have realized that being a servant leader can be a joyous adventure. That seems to be the case with Tanner.

Just a few hours after the Agape Toastmasters meeting on the topic of servant leadership I was in attendance at a memorial service for a young man named Tanner. Tanner was an avid fan of the Los Angeles Kings and a lover of life in general. His zest for life seemed to have the power to impact people who've never even met him. In attendance at the memorial were more than 200 people who were in some way connected to Tanner's life. Of course there were family members and friends but also a large number of Los Angeles Kings fans who did the majority of their interaction with Tanner on the on-line hockey forum Lets Go Kings.com or at events related to the Los Angeles Kings. Tanner was born with a genetic disorder called Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) that had him in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals for much of his life. Yet most people weren't even aware that Tanner was sick. His optimistic, joy-filled attitude in the face of adversity inspired everyone, even me. Though I never had an interaction with Tanner directly, I saw the behind-the-scenes support and concern that built up for Tanner on-line. I became involved in his life through the stories my husband told me and at some point, I found myself attached to Tanner and concerned for his well being. Attendance at Tanner's memorial service was emotional to say the least. Sniffles and sobs could be heard near and far and tears welled up and streamed down many faces. Tanner is a symbol of living life to the fullest of contributing joy to people's lives and making everyone you know feel a little bit more love and awe for life than they did before they met you. It seems to me that Tanner was a servant and a leader but he never intended to be either. He was just a guy who really knew how to enjoy life regardless of the circumstances and that is the paradox of servant leadership that I'm trying to grasp; how you can be of service while also having the time of your life every day? The best place to start is with a dance party on the weekend.  Since I discovered that my way to be of service is to have fun, share music and put other people at ease, I have invited a handful of friends over to have a dance party in my living room. Last night I did a little bit of music shopping as I plan to put together a playlist for the evening that will evoke a carefree, empowering, "I am Galvanized" feeling. Part of my music shopping took place over at Party Ben.com Party Ben has a real knack for mixing tracks from different genres and generations and creating a fun powerful final product with a great beat. Of course my all-time favorite is his Galvanize the Empire mix. This week I also spotted a few new favorites including This Tightrope's Made for Walking and the Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone (Party Ben's Alone in Baltimore mix) Although the party isn't until tomorrow night, already the women I've invited are excited, smiling, anticipatory and ready to enjoy an evening of fun and freedom. Just goes to show that "being the light" isn't all about wearing robes, burning incense and sitting cross-legged on the floor. I'll share more about the Girl's Night Dance Party and the music in next week's Galvanized Facebook Friday.

Galvanized Facebook Friday 02-04-11 – Music, Technology and Memory Lane

There are so many things to listen to and see these days.  I recently got a Roku player that allows me to not only watch streaming Netflix but to watch YouTube videos on my TV, to tune into iTunes Podcasts on my TV and to listen to alternative radio from San Francisco via SomaFM (I like the Groove Salad myself). As mind-blowing as all that is/was, the thing that excited me the most this week was discovering an episode of Soul Train from the 80's with appearances from Run DMC and Dazz.  In the same episode, a boy named Jesse made a "wish" with a then relatively small organization called, "Make a Wish Foundation" to dance on Soul Train.  Jesse was 9 and had luekemia and this boy could bust a move.  Needless to say, I pressed "keep until I delete" on my Tivo so I can watch this again and again. Here's a video of the interview Run DMC did on Soul Train. After watching this episode, it got me thinking about the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest.  That sent me looking for a good Beastie Boys tune to listen to.  I chose High Plains Drifter. One of the things I love about Hip Hop is the storytelling aspect and how the artists weave so many associations into one song.  This video demonstrates visually how many tie-ins you can cram into one song. I used to listen to all these songs over and over again trying to figure out all the references and innuendos. All this "trippin'" down memory lane reminded me of how my brothers and I used to dance to Yo MTV Raps and how one of my brothers was dedicated enough to get cardboard, lay it out in the driveway and practice break dancing moves...yes, to Run DMC and maybe even Grand Master Flash if I remember correctly. Or maybe that was ME. Yes, I went to see Grand Master Flash twice in Hollywood in the 80's.  An experience worth remembering. My brothers and I had a lot of fun growing up thanks to music and still to this day we enjoy listening to old-school rap and hip hop at family reunions.  I am especially entertained as I watch the looks on people's faces when I tell them that. Have a great weekend and get galvanized! P.S. I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea to have a Facebook page for iamgalvanized.com that's separate from my Sheri Zampelli page on Facebook. Gal Vanized Birthday Celebration – Hula Hooping to Naked Raygun (feat. Jake Burns)

Yesterday was my birthday and I decided to have the best time ever and to do things that bring me joy. After all these years, my husband and I have finally surrendered to the fact that I won't grow out of my wildness anytime soon. So I had him shoot this video of me lip synching, hula hooping and jumping to Suspect Device with Naked Raygun (feat. Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers). I've been living most of my 45 years trying to please others and "tone it down". Although Gal Vanized had an appearance in the 80's, during the height of the Punk Rock scene in Los Angeles and a brief stint of fun with the L.A. Derby Dolls, at other times, she went deeeeep into hiding. Today is her official re-birth day. As stated in an earlier video, I'm "gettin' too old for this B.S." and it's time to galvanize. What Are Your Influences?

Every musical act has influences. The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest influenced each other. Punk bands from the U.K. influenced garage bands in Southern California and vice versa. Reggae and dub influenced each other. What are your influences? That's what we talked about in Helping and Listening Skills this week. We came up with a great list and I liked it so much I took a picture of it. I asked the students to tell me about the things that influence them. What do they value? Why do they do what they do; love what they love? This is the list they came up with: Parents Environment -Friends -Neighborhood -Peers -Religion Culture Schools Food/Nutrition Media Mental Illness Life Experience -Observation Socio-Economic Status ($$$) Books Music Relationships Friendships Family -Uncles -Aunts -Brothers -Sisters -etc. Role Model -Coach -Minister -Teacher Law Government Health Medication/Drugs Language Sleep Fashion Freedom Travel Pets Sex Arts -Pictures -Painting -Dance Entertainment Perception The point I want to make in this class is that you cannot know any of these things about yourself or anyone else unless you first learn how to listen. A great Master Mind group is one that's committed to honoring and respecting each other and that includes listening unconditionally and without judgment. It is honoring a person to trust that they know what's best for their own life. --------------- Start a Master Mind Group.comWhen you think about it, every musical act you know of is using the Master Mind principle whether they realize it or not. They are joining together as a team with a combined vision. You can use the same principle and make some truly rockin' things happen in your life. Do you have a creative project you want to complete? Do you want to find a purpose for your life? If so, I invite you to come over to my brand new page called Start a Master Mind Group.com. Sex and Puberty on The Sheri and Erin Show (feat. Ethel Jackson of Living from Within)

Let's talk about sex baby! That's what Erin, Ethel and I did on this week's episode of The Sheri and Erin Show on Blog Talk Radio. Ethel's mission is to teach all girls and women about the pleasure awaiting them in their clitoris. The Sheri and Erin Show is all about enjoying life to the fullest. Since sex is something that's on everyone's mind...whether they're having any or not, we decided it's time to talk about it frankly and honestly and that's exactly what we did. So, if you want to know how to experience more pleasure in life, whether you're having sex or not, you'll want to listen to this show over and over again until you can wake up to the fact that life is here for you to enjoy it, not to suffer through it.
