Power of The Almighty Defenders

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Is it a coincidence that I bought The Almighty Defenders album on Halloween and now it’s haunting me?

The Almighty Defenders – Cone Of Light from The Pool Parties on Vimeo.

The Almighty Defenders strike me as a rockabilly gospel band. They dress in gospel choir robes on stage and have an eclectic Elvis, meets bar band, meets Motown sound. I discovered them while listening to XMU. Each time they played Cone of Light, I found myself looking down at the satellite receiver to catch the name of the artist and track. I did this enough times that it finally stuck. I came home, looked them up on iTunes and knew I would not be satisfied until I owned this entire album and could play it whenever and wherever I wanted.

Feeling Good by Nina Simone Lyrics

Birds flying high you know how I feel
Sun in the sky you know how I feel
Reeds driftin on by you know how I feel

(refrain:)
Its a new dawn
Its a new day
Its a new life
For me
And Im feeling good

Fish in the sea you know how I feel
River running free you know how I feel
Blossom in the tree you know how I feel

(refrain)

Dragonfly out in the sun you know what I mean, dont you know
Butterflies all havin fun you know what I mean
Sleep in peace when day is done
Thats what I mean

And this old world is a new world
And a bold world
For me

Stars when you shine you know how I feel
Scent of the pine you know how I feel
Oh freedom is mine
And I know how I feel

Music to Soar Like a Superhero

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

steviewondersongslifeOkay, maybe this only applies if you’re over 40 but the truth is, when I hear funk and soul from the 70’s I feel like a superhero.

I think afros and bell bottoms, I think bangs and wings in your hair. I think platforms, Elton John and Wonder Woman. I especially think dancing…you know, like Soul Train or something. I looked forward to Soul Train every Saturday morning. How about you?

wonderwomanIf so, you’ll probably like the Stevie Wonder channel I created on Pandora.com. Come check it out if you want to groove 70’s style.

Pandora makes for great background music while you’re working. There are very few commercials and the sounds are exactly what you want them to be.

Here’s a video from YouTube with a little Soul Train action. I used to try and steal these moves when I was 10.

Get Gal VanIZed Inaugural Celebration

Monday, January 19th, 2009

With the inauguration of President Barack Obama coming, I have decided to have a personal inaugural celebration. I have decided to step up and become a president of my own life.

That includes presiding over my thoughts, actions and choices. It also means consciously choosing the beliefs and actions that keep my own life moving forward and benefit others along the way. There is no time for hatred, pettiness or materialism. We must get strong and stay strong.

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri ZampelliPlease join with me. Choose to become the president of your life and to live as a leader who is dedicated to be part of the change movement.

If you find yourself resisting change or sabotaging your success, my book, From Sabotage to Success might help. This book truly proves that you can change your life no matter how many hard times you’ve experienced.

By the way if you want your own Obama poster go to:
http://obamiconme.pastemagazine.com
You can get one with your own name or with ‘Galvanized’. Being Gal Vanized means that you can have fun, be feminine and sexy and also be strong. It’s about finding the balance of energies that is uniquely you. I believe that as we do this, we are in a better postion to share our gifts with the world.

Therefore, it is a noble effort to take this preparation time, just as we consider it noble when a warrior prepares for battle or a musician practices her scales.

There’s a Galvanized theme song and T-Shirt. Both are great for getting you in the mood to be a creative force in your own life and the world at large.

The theme song is titled Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers. This YouTube video combines audio from the Party Ben remix that blends Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers with sound-bits from the Empire Strikes Back movie along with video clips from the movie’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Hero, and House of Flying Daggers. Enjoy.

If you want consistent, fun, entertaining, informative articles to keep you motivated and help you feel Gal Vanized, subsbribe to this blog and also check out the blog at icreatehabits.com.

A Change is Gonna Come – Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi at Inaugural Celebration

This weekend, HBO is free and the Obama Inaugural Celebration is available for all to share. Today, the We Are One Celebration commenced at the Lincoln Memorial concert stage. The day included public speaking, historical outtakes and live musical acts including Bruce Springsteen, Patti LaBelle, Will.i.am, Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks.

My personal favorite was Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi singing A Change is Gonna Come as a duet. You can see for free here:

The duet begins about 10 minutes into the program.

LaVette commanded the stage in all her black glory. Ostrich feathers extended from her sleeves and neck line. She hit each note and delivered each word with eloquence. Jon Bon Jovi didn’t hold anything back on his end either. He dressed in tight jeans and a black leather jacket and dominated his perfomance with charm and style.

The two of them poured emotion into their music as they mirrored each other and sang the words, “It’s been a long, long, long, long time coming, but I know-oh-oh-oh Change is Gonna Come.”

The act was introduced by actor Jamie Foxx. A Change is Gonna Come was originally recorded with Otis Redding in 1964. This track is also one of 12 songs on Seal’s 2008 release, “Soul”. For more about this show and to watch videos or view pictures online, visit HBO.com.

Mr. Lif to Release “I Heard it Today”

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Mr. Lif isn’t afraid to create an album that speaks brazenly about current political issues. He addresses the fear, paranoia, and angst resulting from the collapse of the U.S. economy. He raps about the bailout bill, self hatred in the Black community, and the housing crisis.

Lif takes these negatives and uses them as a impetus to search for a healthier way of life. He wants to use his realizations as a way to achieve freedom and peace of mind through the power of the imagination. In a true “change starts with you” move, Lif will self-release his album on his own label, Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Look for it on April 21, 2009. For now, you can check him out on MySpace or listen to his track Arise right here on this page.

Lyrics for Sunny Day by Akon

Who’d ever thought that I would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…
and now I look forward to every day….(welcome to my sunny day)…

Block don’t stop always stayed hot…
No matter how the seasons got..
I still remember when they took me away….
Kept it on lock then I got caught then I realized that I had to stop…
Then I took the time to explore a better way…

Searched high and low, so close, yet so far to go…
I just know, there’s a sunny day

Who’d ever thought that I would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…
And now I look forward to every day….

Welcome to my sunny day…
my sunny day…
everyday….
a better day…
Welcome to my sunny day…
my sunny day….
every day…
a better day…
welcome to my sunny day…

akon_happy_dayBeen a long day…
On my way to my holy place to pray…
Give thanks for every blessing given to me…
I know there’s more to see…more to me…no more living in misery…
Cos this is how I visioned life to be…..

Searched high and low, so close, yet so far to go…
I just know, there’s a sunny day

Who’d ever thought that i would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…

Song of the Week – 1-6-09 – I Am by Novel with Talib Kweli feat. Ben Folds

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Music influences are like a web that unites musicians and music lovers together. In my last post I mentioned how Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio is a rendition of Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder. The song of the week is also a blend of different visions from different artists. The song that inspired Novel to write I Am was a piece by Ben Folds from his Rockin’ The Suburbs album under the title The Luckiest. Talib Kweli and Novel put their own spin on it and titled it I Am. It’s available on the I Am (Future Black President) EP.

The first YouTube video below is a music video for the song, the second video is a rough edit video of Ben Folds and Novel talking about the united effort in making this track possible.

Sample lyrics for I Am by Novel and Talib Kweli

I’m as free as a spirit
I’m as fly as a bird
I’m whatever I want to be
As long as I am heard

I’m a product of the ghetto
my father’s boy
I’m a brother to my sisters
My mother’s pride and joy

I am not of this world
I am something else
I am something lived
I am something felt

I am the new generation’s beat writer
The Jack Kerouac influence
I am the hippie peace fighter
