Big Youth at Ragga Muffins Festival, Long Beach 2010

On Saturday, I attended the Ragga Muffins Festival in Long Beach. Michael Zampelli took some photos for The District Weekly and I snagged a few for this blog.

My favorite musical act of the day was Big Youth (pictured above). This man exudes more verve and childlike enthusiasm than most people a fraction of his age. He’s got a groovin’ rap style and smooth moves to go with it. Go to Big Youth’s MySpace page if you want to get in the groove.

I also felt childlike and care-free wearing my Gal Vanized get-up and eating funnel cake. I decided that I was going to surrender myself to the IRIE vibes and absorb as much of the experience as possible.

The crowd was very diverse and fun. Everyone was relaxed and having a good time. It was like sitting in a big huge living room. No problems whatsoever. I wasn’t the only one there with pink hair, click on the photo below to see a larger version of the audience.

Sunday Afternoon at Farmer’s Market in Long Beach

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

This afternoon I strolled the long aisle of produce and food vendors that comprises Long Beach Farmer’s Market. I had my new Christmas present, the Flip Ultra HD Video camera, in tow. This is my first Flip production and I’m looking forward to more.

See the HD version of the video on YouTube, it gives you a sense of the quality of the Flip Video.

I’ve been wanting to shop at the Farmer’s Market more often but sometimes I forget. I’m grateful to the folks at everythinglongbeach.com who recently listed all the Long Beach Farmer’s Markets. I’m going to re-post the link here for any Long Beach residents who are interested. I find the Farmer’s Market not only health-conscious, but an enjoyable experience as I hope I’ve captured in this video.

By the way, the band in this video is TED Bluegrass Band. They play every Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at Cafe Ambrosia, 1923 E. Broadway, Long Beach CA 90802. You can hear more of their music on MySpace.

White House Concert Showcases Diverse Musical Talent

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a workshop and concert with classical musicians, young and old, as part of the White House Music Series on November 4, 2009.

The audience consisted of what First Lady Michelle Obama referred to as “classical music superstars of tomorrow” in her opening speech. She spoke about how “The White House is the people’s house. It’s a place that’s steeped in history but also a place where we like to start new traditions and to bring people together in different ways because nothing mixes old and new quite like classical music.”

She commended the musicians on their dedication to achieve musical excellence and said, “It’s through that struggle that you find what you truly have to offer to your instrument or to anything in life”.

“You’ll learn that if you believe in yourself and put in your best effort, that there’s nothing that you can’t achieve. And those aren’t just lessons about music. These are really lessons about life” she said.

The concert featured Sharon Isbin on guitar, Awadagin Pratt on piano, Alisa Weilerstein on cello and Joshua Bell on violin. These musicians are considered the best in the world and have been playing their instruments since childhood.

This hour-long concert featured an eclectic mix of musicians and music lovers. The attendees were young and old, male and femail and ranged a wide spectrum of ethnic diversity yet they were united by a common love: music.

Each of the musicians is clearly passionate about and connected to their music and their enthusiasm shines through during their performances. You simply don’t want to miss Alisa Weilerstein on cello at 40:55. She truly embodies what it means to be in the moment of creativity.

A Night of Music at SUB-Mission in San Francisco

Sitting on the pot, taking a shot at SUB-Mission in San Francisco

Sitting on the pot, taking a shot at SUB-Mission in San Francisco

A few weeks ago I went on a road trip to San Francisco. It was great to get away and hang out with my brother.

We visitied a new club called SUB-Mission and had a rip-roaring good time.

As the bands (Skitzo/Savage Machine/Farticus/Cretacious/Fluff Grrlz) spewed out their version of 80’s hardcore metal/punk, and as guys and gals stood watching with their arms crossed and heads bobbing, I pranced around in the audience, pink flower in hair trying to nudge people into action.

The highlight of the night is when I was running around in circles creating my own mosh pit and the singer from Farticus basically jumped me. The two off us were locked tight, she was singing, I was holding her and time stood still as I thought to myself, “holy crap, what do I do now?”

What I did was set the singer back on stage and go on about the business of actin’ a fool. The next day, as my brother and I recounted the evenings events, I said, “now that’s life…THAT is living in the moment.” I can guarantee you, it will never happen again.

Evidently, someone caught my insanity on video. I’m the blur that you see going by during the video and the one who the singer, Vag jumps on at about 1:56. I’m not sure if I’m proud or humiliated but one thing is for darn sure, I had fun!

So get out of the darn house once in a while and have some fun. If you’re in San Francisco, check out SUB-Mission. It’s located in the Mission District and the SUB stands for: Strength, Unity, Brotherhood.

Song of the Week – 2-3-09 – Nightlife by Soft Pack

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

I wasn’t able to find a direct download link or YouTube video for Nightlife by Soft Pack so you’ll have to go to Soft Pack’s MySpace page to listen to the song of the week.

The Soft Pack was formerly known as The Muslims. This YouTube video will give you a feel for what they’re like:

A Week of Tongue in Cheek: Chlamydia’s Not a Flower

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Maybe my humor has gone a little far South this weekend. I did make 665 1/2 the Song of the Week and I wrote an article about Shitting Glitter, but this is a year of breaking free from self-imposed limitations so pooh on you.

Eva Brontosaurus
I could not contain my laughter on Thursday night when I saw comedy troupe Eva Brontosaurus at DiPiazza’s. They sang about STD’s and excrement the way Donny and Marie sing about country and rock and roll.

eva_brontosaurus1Somehow they were able to stage it so that songs about diseases and body fluids were funny. I guess it starts with the choice of wardrobe.

I shot this photo before they went on stage, they were already making fun of themselves then. (Unfortunately, I didn’t capture the shiny red patent leather pumps the singer was wearing, that was like the cherry on top of the hot fudge sundae).

Later, when they began singing love ballads about blood and urine and feces with perfectly serious faces, I began to bust out. Theatrically they are like a bad high school drama team. Think Molly Shannon as “Superstar” from Saturday Night Live.

Song of the Week – 1-27-09 – 665 1/2 by Rosemary’s Billygoat

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

Who knew you could have a sense of humor about Satan? Well, Rosemary’s Billygoat doesn’t seem to take the devil too seriously at all. Watch the video and read the lyrics and just see if 665 1/2 won’t make you laugh. I dare you.

Here’s a little sample of the lyrics:

Well ever since I was born,
I’ve been growing horns
I eat Christians for breakfast
Pentacostals for lunch
and then you come along
and I got me a hunch

you think you’re evil
don’t make me laugh
At best, you’re a 665 1/2

You can listen to the studio version of the song here:

This band was the halftime entertainment at the Saturday Roller Derby bout at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles. Michael Zampelli was there to document the evening on behalf of LAist.com.

A Change is Gonna Come – Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi at Inaugural Celebration

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Apple iTunes

This weekend, HBO is free and the Obama Inaugural Celebration is available for all to share. Today, the We Are One Celebration commenced at the Lincoln Memorial concert stage. The day included public speaking, historical outtakes and live musical acts including Bruce Springsteen, Patti LaBelle, Will.i.am, Stevie Wonder and Garth Brooks.

My personal favorite was Bettye LaVette and Jon Bon Jovi singing A Change is Gonna Come as a duet. You can see for free here:

The duet begins about 10 minutes into the program.

LaVette commanded the stage in all her black glory. Ostrich feathers extended from her sleeves and neck line. She hit each note and delivered each word with eloquence. Jon Bon Jovi didn’t hold anything back on his end either. He dressed in tight jeans and a black leather jacket and dominated his perfomance with charm and style.

The two of them poured emotion into their music as they mirrored each other and sang the words, “It’s been a long, long, long, long time coming, but I know-oh-oh-oh Change is Gonna Come.”

The act was introduced by actor Jamie Foxx. A Change is Gonna Come was originally recorded with Otis Redding in 1964. This track is also one of 12 songs on Seal’s 2008 release, “Soul”. For more about this show and to watch videos or view pictures online, visit HBO.com.

Rivers Cuomo Picture in Rolling Stone Magazine

Friday, January 9th, 2009

cuomorollingstone Since I was in the room when this photo was taken and I’m closely related to the photographer, I can’t help but get excited that its in Rolling Stone Magazine.

Rivers Cuomo (Weezer front man) did a special hootenanny at Fingerprints Records in Long Beach back in November. It was the day Alone II – Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo was released in stores. By some last minute change of plans, me and my husband Michael went to the event as journalists on behalf of the LAist.com. Michael Zampelli shot photos and I captured the evenings events in writing.

Alone II is available on iTunes

Cuomo Rivers at Fingerprints in Long BeachThere were some cool little milestones along the way such as getting on the week around the ists list, having the photo published on The Rolling Stone and District Weekly’s websites and seeing that the event itself was front page local news in the Press Telegram. Plus, I was in a photo that was published on PressTelegram.com (I’m in the red sweater, standing beside Rivers Cuomo).

Today’s milestone is the biggest and best of all so far; a photo published in Rolling Stone magazine. I’ve been looking at music magazines most of my life. Cool photos of my favorite musicians was probably one of things I most looked forward to seeing. It’s fun to be a part of the story in the making. Major props to Michael Zampelli AKA Rinkrat for this noteable accomplishment.
