Hip Hop Lovers Cry “Get Rel!g!on”

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

“Get Rel!g!on” is the current rally cry surrounding the latest hip hop producer, who’s already began dazzling artists and record labels with his skilled creations and innovative beats. Utilizing a fascinating mix of live playing and assorted sampling, the young producer from Vancouver, British Columbia is generating buzz in Canada as well as the U.S. Rel!g!on is already releasing his own material, as well as working with other artists to build his reputation as a bona fide hit machine in the hip hop game.

Released in January 2010, his first official release, Revelationz I garnered positive attention from reviewers and fans across the web. Featuring heavy hitters such as Chuck D of Public Enemy as well as Planet Asia and Moka Only, Rel!g!on’s first record was nothing short of an instant hip hop success. His inspired, imaginative tracks laid the foundation for ultra skilled MCs to spit their finest rhymes and create memorable, catchy songs.

“Rel!g!on has a nice sound to his production, and it shouldn’t be too much longer before his congregation of followers grows,” said Emmanuel Wallace of RapReviews.com on Revelationz I.

Born in Ottawa, Rel!g!on grew up listening to his father’s musical influence, which included a variety of instruments, singing, and an extensive record collection. Fascinated by keyboards and organs, the fledgling hip hop perfectionist began experimenting with records and a Casio SK 1, beginning the journey of honing his incredible skills. While he started with an old keyboard and entertaining diss tracks about his high school classmates, Rel!g!on rapidly progressed into a respected producer working with artists from Vancouver to New York.

The future is bright for Rel!g!on, as he shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, with a number of impressive projects currently in the works for hip hop fans across North America. He produced two tracks on Planet Asia’s upcoming record Black Belt Theatre, which also features Raekwon of Wu-Tang, DJ Babu and Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Ras Kass and many more. Rel!g!on will also be at the helm for Planet Asia’s entire next full length, slated for 2011. This summer will also see the anticipated release of a collaboration record between Rel!g!on and one of Pittsburgh’s finest MCs, Jasiri X and New Orleans rapper/producer Dain. Summer and Music Festival 2010 Kickoff – So Many Wizards Video

Monday, June 14th, 2010

It was a smooth-groovin’, fun-flowing day of live music on Saturday June 12 as the Summer and Music Festival kicked off it’s 2010, 13-concert series. The first show of the summer was called Future Legends and featured local, up-and-coming acts such as Deep Sea Diver, Jay Buchanan and So Many Wizards (see video).

Saturday’s concert took place on a closed-off section of First Street between Elm and Linden in Downtown Long Beach. The sound and lighting equipment were solar-powered with help from Sustainable Waves and there was a free bike valet on site (not to mention easy access to a bar, a coffee shop and Chinese food).

As the day progressed, the street filled in with an assortment of Long Beach characters. The people-watching opportunities alone made it well worth the trip. The crowd ranged from 2 months old to 85. Toddlers ran from their moms, teenaged girls danced in a circle and I, of course, wore pink and roller skated.

DJ Lithuanian Prince made sure there would be inspiration for roller skating and dancing, as he poured out a non-stop musical selection of hard-to-find, easy-to-jive-to vinyl picks. The day had a soul-filled family picnic feel to it. One of my favorite bands of the day was So Many Wizards. Here’s a video of one of their songs from this Saturday’s live performance.

If you missed the Summer and Music kick-off, have no fear; Rockabilly on Pine is coming this Saturday, January 19 from 5-9 p.m and this year’s itinerary features 13 eclectic music events, including some favorites from last year, such as Battle of the Tribute Bands and Funk Fest. Concerts will span the genres of folk, jazz, pop, rockabilly, funk and beyond, bringing together artists and art enthusiasts of all kinds. For details, visit www.summerandmusic.com.

Musical Road Trip to the California Poppy Reserve

Friday, May 7th, 2010

(If you don’t see the video above, click here to go to YouTube)

On Tuesday morning my husband came into the bedroom, where I was comfortably sleeping and proclaimed “road trip”. We got in the car and drove to a destination that was a surprise to me. We ended up at the California Poppy Reserve in Antelope Valley.

Along the way, we listened to music non-stop and documented the day with photos and video. In a sense, this is a mix-tape of our trip. All the car shots have music in the background.

See Michael Zampelli’s photo gallery on Flickr.

We listened to Q-tip, Gary Numan, drum and bass and The Fall. We traveled from the 710 in Long Beach to the 5 freeway at Castaic Lake. Then, we took mountain roads all the way to the poppy fields. I hope this video inspires you to get out on the road or out in nature. I think we all truly need this type of rejuvenation for our sanity.

Song of the Week – 5-4-10 – I Am Not a Robot by Marina and the Diamonds

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

I Am Not a Robot by Marina and the Diamonds Lyrics

You’ve been acting awful tough lately
Smoking a lot of cigarettes lately
But inside, you’re just a little baby
It’s okay to say you’ve got a weak spot
You don’t always have to be on top
Better to be hated than love, love, loved for what you’re not

You’re vulnerable, you’re vulnerable
You are not a robot
You’re loveable, so loveable
But you’re just troubled

Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot

You’ve been hanging with the unloved kids
Who you never really liked and you never trusted
But you are so magnetic, you pick up all the pins
Never committing to anything
You don’t pick up the phone when it ring, ring, rings
Don’t be so pathetic, just open up and sing

I’m vulnerable, I’m vulnerable
I am not a robot
You’re loveable, so loveable
But you’re just troubled

Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot

Can you teach me how to feel real?
Can you turn my power on?
Well, let the drum beat drop

Guess what? I’m not a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot

Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot
Guess what? I’m not a robot, a robot

Hip Hop and The Law of Attraction

Sunday, May 2nd, 2010

This song by Blackalicious is about living in the flow of life which is exactly what the Law of Attraction is. But in some ways it’s more enjoyable to listen to this song and feel it than it is to sit around and think about it.

Automatique by Blackalicious Lyrics

[Floetry]
It’s automatique– now
So here bring my speak– style
Show y’all how to freak– star
Is automatique– now
So automatique– now
The sound you gon’ keep– down
Come listen and peep– how
It’s automatique

It’s automatic sporadic movements on the brake
The moment’s magic the last thing that I should do is think
I burst the energy that hints that really it’s no time
At birth you start to think that after death back to no mind
A rest that makes you new again now you embrace the planet
And stand in all of all the thing you daily took for granted
The trees are posin’ all unique in form make this perfection
The most important time is now tomorrow’s a projection
A co-creator if you only just believe in that
Right here today inside is where I find my freedom at
Is simple as a lyric from my soul to yours as felt
I didn’t write this I just let the pen move by itself
It’s ART-o-matic

[Hook]

Get you Pink Panther checks here:

[Natalie of Floetry]
So blessed we rest in a space over-standin’
This breath’s so unique we must trace where we landed
Magnetizin’ minor tracks is subliminal
So fiend-in to the evidence is evident I’m bein’ true
True to the moment the channelin’ the callin’
True to the heartbeat the passion and the formin’
This rollercoaster’s the one I stood in line for
Hands in the air these upside downs here are paid for
Make this relevant and here what you gotta hear
I’m recordin’ all the secrets of my silent shed
Don’t think about it just absorb everything you taste
If it set you free you gonna find the ways
You’re who you gonna be unless you choose otherwise
If you let it flow the universe will empathize
Check your programs they monitorin’ your sanity
Now close your eyes inside you find the clarity
It’s automatic!

[Hook]

[Floetry]
Free your body know this ought to be open
Then lose control just let it happen then
Live at it and set it
Move again your clarity start to assume again
I know this one twist will feel it in
You think you don’t know the engine (???)
But it’s so automatic
So so so automatic

It’s automative, beyond the common logic native
Beyond the ball around my drama now I’m divin’ waitin
So stop and wait this, now operate it on the wavelength
A thought of way is presented by true laws of nature
Across the nation a lost of patience is cost inflation
So caught in waitin’, and contemplatin’ obligations
Read up inaugurations politrations violatin
And all the haters all up it cannot invadin’
The honest tension, two orders sacred not created
Good thought I made it!! I’m born beyond the constellations
So concetratin’, and follow man we all are awakin’
It’s automative, you gotta make it follow faith in
Come on come on!

Song of the Week – 4-13-10 – Do Anything You Wanna Do by Eddie and the Hot Rods

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Do Anything You Wanna Do Lyrics

I’m gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
It’s the kind of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs
With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone
Now I’m gonna find out who

Why don’t you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don’t you tell them what you’re gonna do
You’ll get so lonely, maybe it’s better that way
It ain’t you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do

I don’t need no politicians to tell me things I shouldn’t be
Neither no opticians to tell me what I oughta see
No-one tells you nothing even when you know they know
They tell you what you should be
They don’t like to see you grow

Why don’t you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don’t you tell them what you’re gonna do
You’ll get so lonely, maybe it’s better that way
It ain’t you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do

I’m gonna break out of the city
Leave the people here behind
Searching for adventure
It’s the kind of life to find
Tired of doing day jobs
With no thanks for what I do
I know I must be someone
Now I’m gonna find out who

Why don’t you ask them what they expect from you ?
Why don’t you tell them what you’re gonna do
You’ll get so lonely, maybe it’s better that way
It ain’t you only, you got something to say
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do
Do anything you wanna do

I Used Punk Rock and Hip Hop Lyrics in My Toastmasters Speech

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Words and environment impact your life. In this speech from the Toastmasters manual, The Entertaining Speaker, I outline a musical anthology of my life starting in childhood with weekly immersion in Soul Train, moving to age 11 and the purchase of Songs in the Key of Life by Stevie Wonder.

(All song links go to iTunes)

In 1979 it was Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang then in the 90’s it was People’s Instinctive Travels and Paths of Rhythm by A Tribe Called Quest.

In between was a lot of fun in the punk rock scene. Songs mentioned and sung in this speech: California Uberalles and Police Truck by The Dead Kennedys and New Dreams by Naked Raygun. I finished up with my theme song: Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers with Q-Tip on vocals.

Is My iPod Psychic?

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Today I was feeling like I needed a little pick-me-up.

I needed to get off my butt and get my Endorphins pumping so I could tap into my inner warrior.

So, I got out my bike, put some air in my tires, turned on my iPod (set on shuffle) and took off.

Here is what I heard. A perfect selection of songs to get me in the Gal Vanized mood once again:

(All links go to iTunes unless otherwise noted)

Guerillas In The Mist by Consolidated (this link goes to the MP3 download of a very rare, controversial piece of music speaking out against white supremacy)
The Captain Kangroo Theme song (good for tapping into childlike spirit if you were a kid in the 70’s)
Stomp by Kirk Franklin’s Nu Nation
Something’s Got to Give by The Beastie Boys

She’s a Woman by The Beatles (Listen on YouTube)
Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine by James Brown

I’ll Speak and Sing the Punk Lyrics of My Youth April 10

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

Tonight I’m preparing for my speech on April 10 titled “Music That Shaped My Youth”. I plan to talk about my upbringing in punk rock culture and my secret love of hip hop that began in 1979 when I purchased Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang and memorized all the words.

I plan to sing a few lyrics through out the speech to capture a bit of the punk rock spirit and, I will (um, “rap”?) vocalize the lyrics of Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers feat. Q-Tip.

Here are the songs I plan to “sing”/rap in my speech. I’m going to put them here so I can come to this page for practice. Hope you enjoy a little walk down memory lane. I will post a video of the speech on April 10 so come back and see the finished product later.

Viva La Revolution and Joker in the Pack by The Adicts

California Uberalles by the Dead Kennedys

Police Truck by Dead Kennedys

New Dreams by Naked Raygun (Even though you can’t hear the song so great here, I love how this video captures the pure mayhem that takes place at every Naked Raygun show, large or small. Being in that “crowd” energy for so many years of my life, it is difficult to be content with long periods of sitting still.

Galvanize by Chemical Brothers (Party Ben Galvanize the Empire Remix)
