Becoming the Licensed Joyologist

Helen Madden, Licensed Joyologist as portrayed by Molly Shannon on Saturday Night Live. I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT!

I’ll have to admit. I have snapped.

After many years of studying books like This Thing Called You, A Course in Miracles, The Secret, Ask and It is Given and A New Earth I think I finally get it.

Basically, the only thing you need to be happy and attract great things into your life is to choose joy.

And yet when I say that, I somehow feel I’m a goofball liberal like the Licensed Joyologist on Saturday Night Live.

I couldn’t find an actual video clip of Molly Shannon from Saturday Night Live but this woman does a good job of imitating her classic “I love it, I love it, I love it” spiel.

So, I’m keepin’ it real simple lately. Because what brings me joy is creativity and connecting with other people. I like music, art and dance. I like to be around people who are pushing the envelope and I like to push my envelope, between well-deserved breaks.

I have no idea why I wrote all of that but I did want to say that I have a new blog where I allow myself to be “woo-woo” and write about the Law of Attraction and Joy and spirituality and chakras and all that good stuff. So, if you’re a little bit “woo woo” too, come take a peak. You might like it. Come visit me at www.icreatehabits.com and please, leave comments and questions if you’d like. It would be cool to have a dialogue about the Law of Attraction including pros, cons and personal stories.

Radio Interview with Dr. Judy Krings for the Carol Solomon Show

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

A few weeks ago I had a very enjoyable phone interview with Dr. Judy Krings. She was interviewing me regarding my book, Donate Your Weight. Dr. Judy and I really hit it off and in this one hour recording we got to talk about all kinds of things including behavior modification, hypnosis, self-love, spirituality, law of attraction and much more.

Having this interview made me excited about podcasting again. In a separate blog I’ll tell you about the return of the Donate Your Weight podcast with co-host Dr. Marjorie Miles.

In the meantime, you can subscribe to the show on iTunes by clicking on the iPod. That way, you’ll get the first show with the new show format on March 3. We’ll be talking about how to stop the struggle with weight and eating and how to use your self-talk to create the life you want.

Love Your Body, Trust Yourself – The Anti-Diet

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Today I felt inspired to get out Stephanie’s Tantric Toning video and get my Chi flowing. The subtitle for this video is The Stress-Free Workout. I was thinking, “hey, my hypnosis CD is called Stress-Free Slimming. The two of these products together would be so inspiring!”

Buy Stress-Free Slimming at CD Baby.com

I’m really dead serious about it. Because for what seems like eternity I have been hating and condeming my body and everything about me day and night, night and day.

Now, if the Law of Attraction is true, how can I possibly attract anything good to myself if I am in CONSTANT struggle? That makes about as much sense as dancing and trying not to dance.

I’ve created a program called Donate Your Weight and it’s not about trying to be perfect or reach an unrealistic ideal. It’s about listening to yourself. It’s about going back to who you were before everyone started piling an overwhelming amount of rules and regulations on top of you. It’s about being free.

If that’s what you’re ready for, then come check us out. We have a free, membership-based on-line community and you can purchase our study at-home course and do this process at your own pace.

It’s Kinda Like Welcome Back Kotter, In a Good Way

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Do you remember the show Welcome Back Kotter? Well, it kinda reminds me of what it’s like in some of my college classes. I’m the “Kotter” for a group of vibrant and honest women on Thursday nights. The class is called Introduction to Victimology and we get into some pretty emotional discussions on a week to week basis. You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I heard. It’s a lot of fun and very rewarding.

Here’s what my student Tammi said to me in class tonight: “Ms. Zampenelli (I have no idea why she calls me that) you might be white, but you got a black soul, you different.”

I took it as a compliment.

I felt like maybe I was stepping into my big person’s shoes for an afternoon.

I have at least 3 important male figures who I admire and would want to “grow up and be like.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Robert F. Kennedy
and
Rev. Ahman

Barack Obama picture. Hope and ProgressWhat I like about each of these leaders is their ability to speak to the human spirit. It seems to me that Obama might be the next important male figure in my life and the life’s of many others.

I hope that we can be inspired not only by his presidential victory but also by his spirit and determination.

I hope we will follow his lead and take on those dreams that continue to call our names.

Whether it’s opening a homeless shelter or forming a corporation, we all have unexpressed dreams and now is a good time to dust them off, take them off the shelf and put them to good use.

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri ZampelliIf you need help overcoming self-sabotage so you can reach your leadership potential, check out my book, From Sabotage to Success. It will help you to learn more about who you are, what your gifts are and how you can be a valuable contribution in this world simply by letting go of self-sabotage and following your dreams.

Research is Like Rare Records, Only Not As Fun

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

Sifting through reseach is kinda like sifting through rare records. There’s a plethora of information available that can be wildly helpful and interesting to a mass of people but it’s tucked away in University libraries where most people won’t bother to look. It takes about 20-30 years for most research to infiltrate and influence society.

Dead Kennedy\'s Give Me Convenience or Give Me DeathThe main problem with most research is that its so boring to read. I’d much rather pull a punk record out of its cover and put it on a turntable than read a research article.

It’s more entertaining to learn about politics and history while listening to the Dead Kennedy’s than it is to read about it while sitting in a vault of papers with no windows reading page upon page of dreary, boring, dead words.

The topics to research are abundantly fascinating to me but my enthusiasm wanes when I try to understand what I’m reading. I go completely bonkers when it comes to understanding those confusing little diagrams and graphs. I swear to God, it’s not written in English. It’s almost like reading the instructions that come with your cell phone, how many people are that patient?

But here’s the deal, knowledge is power. Music is power. We owe it to ourselves to seek it out and improve ourselves with it. We owe it to each other.

So, I’m helping my friend Sharareh write her doctoral dissertation. (That’s when you practically have to write a whole book based on tons of research so you can get a PhD).

Sharareh Namjoo gets her PhDYou think I have an problem reading research, Sharareh’s first language is Farsi!

Part of how I’m helping her is by compiling and summarizing data (sounds fun huh?) I have a magical, white, three-ring binder at the bottom shelf of my bookcase titled “Research Articles.” I got it out, dusted it off, sneezed, then looked for studies that might help my friend with her dissertation.

I found so many cool things that I just want to share the titles with everyone. If you’re anything like me, when you try to actually read the research, your eyes begin to roll up into your head and your tounge starts hanging out.

Reading the titles, on the other hand, is kinda fun. It gives you a feel for the type of information that is available for you if you’ll just look. If you’re really fascinated by a particular subject, you might find the motivation to read and yawn and eventually figure it out. Heck, maybe you’ll write a song about it? As you look at the titles below, please pause to consider why this research is done in the first place. Who pays for it? What do they use it for? Hmmmm.

**Effect of Exposure to Photographs of Thin Models on Self-Consciousness in Female College Students
**An Imagery-Processing View of the Role of Pictures in Print Advertisements
**Effects of Repeating Varied Ad Executions on Brand Name Memory
**Encoding and Retrieval of Ad Affect in Memory
**Predicting the Effectiveness of Different Strategies of Advertising Variation: A Test of the Repetition-Variation Hypotheses
**The Effects of an Advertising Retrieval Cue on Young Children’s Memory and Brand Evaluations
**An Analysis of Learned Helplessness: II. The Processing of Success
**Influence of Aerobic Exercise on Depression
**Self-Control Techniques of Famous Novelists (from the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis)
**Depression and Mental Control: The Resurgence of Unwanted Negative Thoughts
**If It’s What’s Inside That Counts, Why not Count it? I : Self-Recording of Feelings and Treatment by “Self-Implosion”

Don’t some of the titles intrigue you? Do they leave you begging for more? What would you like to find out through research if you could? How would you use reserach to improve your community?

P.S. Subscribe to this blog if you want to find out more about politics, punk rock, media influence and how all this stuff is tied together.

P.P.S. If you struggle with weight or body image problems, I have created some recordings based on the research above to help you change your self-image from negative to positive and release excess weight. You can find out more at Donate Your Weight.com, Amazon.com or iTunes.

Hearts of Space – A Musical Trip for Space Fans

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Hearts of Space is one of those constants in my life that I never tell anyone about. It’s a little strange, and not particularly “catchy”.

None of the songs have poetic lyrics or infectous guitar riffs. In fact, it’s almost as if Hearts of Space beams you up into it’s starship, takes you on a vacation and spits you out at home when it’s over. Sometimes you don’t remember where you’ve been.

Recently, I discovered that Hearts of Space episodes play regularly at night on XM Satelitte Channel 77 Audio Visions. I have been swept away, night after night; lulled away into a world of unbounded creativity. I find that the shows make a perfect backdrop for creative writing, drawing or sewing.

These past few nights I’ve been working on my Self-Fulfilling Scrapbook. A collection of words, images and affirmations that signify the type of person I want to be and the legacy I want to leave on this earth. I decided to set aside a half-hour each night to either read it or add new pictures or words as needed.

I have to admit. My life feels like it’s falling apart right now and I’m struck by the financial crisis just like lots of other people. But that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea for me to sit around and create more of the same does it? Heck, if this Secret stuff works at all, I really have some cleaning up to do in the belief department if you know what I mean.

But I’m getting off topic. What I’m trying to say is that if you need some music to open up your creative flow, check out Hearts of Space. If you want more info on consciously creating your life, check out my hypnosis services and maybe we can schedule an appointment. I also have an audio download of a session I did with a woman who was seriously blocked creatively. True story: she cleared away 20 dumpsters of clutter from her house after she had this session with me.

By the way, you can go to the ever so spacey Hearts of Space website and sign up to receive their playlist free. You can also listen to the show free, but only on Sunday’s. Other than that you have to buy a Access Plan. They have a lot of options available, from a $3, 3-day pass to annual plans for as low as $30. If you’ve been trying to find the perfect music to meditate or relax to, this just might be what you’re looking for.

Don’t Smoke That Cigarette Here Please – Smoking and the Cultural Shift

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

In our Prevention and Education Class (HS255) we talked about cultural shifts regarding smoking cigarettes. We talked about how as early as 20 years ago you could smoke anywhere you wanted, anytime, even airplanes and busses. Cigarette ads were everywhere and cigarette companies used to publicly sponsor events.

Fast forward 20 years to attitudes about smoking today. They have changed drastically.

I have been a concert goer for 25 years. I grew up smoking cigarettes in clubs. I had a cigarette holder with a clasp. Sometimes I used one of those “sexy” cigarette holders just like Audrey Hepburn. Smoking was a part of my wardrobe. Yet, this weekend, at the Nine Inch Nails concert when one bored man sitting near me decided to light up, I immediately wanted to flee.

Many people, smokers and non-smokers alike express a similar sentiment when subjected to smoking in public. How and why does a shift like this happen? Well, for starters, you might want to pick up a book titled The Tipping Point because I think it explains everything.

On another note, I quit smoking by using hypnosis and now I hypnotize people to quit smoking (among other things). So, it is only natural for me to end here and leave you with a very popular and socially acceptable form of hypnosis: recorded information played repeatedly.

Notice how singer Tex Williams isn’t upset with the dangers or smell of cigarettes, only the fact that they take up so much time and that he’s tired of waiting for people to get another smoke. Today you can’t see anything related to smoking without also hearing how bad it is for you. That’s the power of lobbying and repetition at work. Enjoy the video!

I like SPASMS

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

SPASMSI like some crazy things. Especially music. I think it’s important to keep the brain stimulated if you want to be fresh, sharp and creative. Sometimes we get so stuck in a rut that we cannot think clearly.

SPASMS will knock the RUT right outta you. Just a few moments of their disturbing, uncontrollable and uncontrolled “music” will throw you so far off balance that you’ll find yourself questioning everything you know.

Not all brain chemistry changes take place listening to relaxing nature sounds.

You can torture yourself on their MySpace page if you dare.

Racy DC kisses Krissy Krash of the LA Derby DollsIf you can make it through all the songs on their page, you just might be changed for life. If you listen to all the songs and never once crack a smile, you are entirely too uptight and should go out for a walk or some dancing…or maybe try roller derby.

This is what I wrote in their “comments”.

Good, Good, Good vibe. I’m feeling a Flipper flashback coming on.
