Song of the Week – 10-6-08 – Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade

This week's song is by Strawberry Switchblade. The video of Since Yesterday is sure to give you an 80's flashback feeling. If you liked Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cindy Lauper or Bow Wow Wow, you'll love singers Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall. itunes logoStrawberry Switchblade is not available on iTunes Lyrics to Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade: Just close your eyes and then remember The thoughts you've locked away When tomorrow comes you'll wish You had today And as we sit here alone Looking for a reason to go on It's so clear that all we have now Are our thoughts of yesterday If you're still there when it's all over I'm scared I'll have to say That a part of you has gone Since yesterday And as we sit here alone Looking for a reason to go on It's so clear that all we have now Are our thoughts of yesterday La La La La... Well, maybe this could be the ending with nothing left of you A hundred wishes couldn't say I don't want to And as we sit here alone Looking for a reason to go on It's so clear that all we have now Are our thoughts of yesterday La La La La... It's so clear that all we have now Are thoughts of yesterday The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records. Song of the Week – 9-30-08 – Good Time by The Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls widget by 6L & AC
This week's song presents a simple concept: having a good time, all the time. It's probably what most people ultimately want but sometimes we think we need to have, be or do something to accomplish it. Other times, we're just stuck in a cycle of repeating past drama. I've been guilty of both. But for now I'm gonna let that go and see if I can have a good time all the time despite it all. itunes logoBuy Good Time by Brazilian Girls on iTunes The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records. Derby Dolls in the L.A. Times

Over the past few months, I've I told you a few times that you should go to a Derby Doll bout....while you still can. Today the Derby Dolls are in the L.A. Times, tomorrow, who knows. If I were you, I'd get tickets now, so you can have the distinction of being one of the lucky ones who got to see it live, before it got all "commercial". (I'm sorta joking on the commercial part but...you never know). Remember, the place only holds 1,700 people and they sell out quicker and quicker each time. This next event is a two-day tournament held June 28 and 29, come one or both days. Teams in the tournament include LA Derby Dolls, TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls, San Diego Derby Dolls and Team Awesome. Doors open at 3:30 on Saturday and 4:30 on Sunday. In addition to the roller derby action you will also see cool bands and you can buy some unique items in the Vendor Village. There are two sets of prices: VIP and General Admission. The difference is, with VIP you get to sit down in the bleachers the entire game, with General Admission you get to stand amongst a crowd of rabid (but cool) roller derby fans. Here's the details: VIP Single day pass: $60 Two day pass: $100 General Admission Single day pass: $30 Two day pass: $50 You must bring your ID or you won't get in the door. Parking is $10 in the lots but sometimes you can find street parking. You must be 21 and over to attend and there is plenty of beer and wine to drink as well as snacks and usually a catering truck with healthy food. Address: 1910 W. Temple St., L.A., CA 90026. I usually work the guest list so if you come, say hi!

The Words You Repeat Create You – Listen Very Carefully

Adolescents blue album coverI wrote an article two years ago about how punk rock changed my life. Tonight, as I dance around my house listening to songs I recorded off of Fungus Radio and prepare for the I Am Woman Conference featuring Terry Cole-Whitaker, It seems like a good time to revist that article. I'm listening to my saved songs on my XM radio receiver. It is so cool that the kids of today can listen to this music anywhere, any time. Right this second I am listening to L.A. Girl by the Adolescents. Remember the lyrics? Remember the raucous guitar, fast drums and gritty vocals? We don't really care if you say we're too young We don't waste our time tanning in the sun We don't even care what you know or think Spoiled rich brat you ain't so neat L.A. girl, L.A. world Don't tell us how to act, tell us what to wear L.A. girl L.A. world, you didn't create our scene We don't care, we can't see why We don't live our lives to keep you satisfied Stuck in a world of dreams again My life starts your life ends You burned out your battery died If it wasnt for O.C. your scene wouldn't be alive L.A. girl, L.A. world, Don't tell us how to act, tell us what to wear L.A. girl L.A. world, you didn't create our scene We don't really care if you say we're too young We don't waste our time tanning in the sun We don't even care what you know or think Spoiled rich brat you ain't so neat L.A. Girl, L.A. world Don't tell us how to act Tell us what wear L.A. Girl, L.A. world you didn't create our scene I'm bored of the sleasy make-up, You'd #@$% any guy in town Your life's a total mess up Why the hell ya hang around? L.A. Girls you bring me down L.A. girl, L.A. world, Don't tell us how to act, tell us what to wear L.A. Girl, L.A. world This SO reminds me of being a Costa Mesa punker in the 80's and these are the types of songs I grew up on. As L.A. Girl comes to a close, I hear the distinct beginning of Urban Struggle by the Vandals. "I want to be a cowboy." Tell me, how the helk can someone who grew up on this kind of anarchy be content to sit at a desk all day and slave to "the man?" How can I possibly be content passing out prescriptions and diagnoses to kids that are just like I was back in the day? What you are listening to NOW is creating you. Is it what you're gonna want? My original article is on my mog. It's titled, "Consequences of a Music-Less Life." Yes, it is long but those of you who get it will appreciate it. If not, type in a new address and move on.

About Gal VanIZed

I remember watching roller derby on T.V. when I was a girl.  I also had some awareness that there was a women's movement going on.  I lived in an environment where women were not valued or nurtured or supportive of each other.  I told my parents I wanted to do roller derby when I grew up and they immediately shunned the idea.  It seems that only "sluts and lesbians" play roller derby, not "good girls" like me.  I wanted to be in sports as a young person but I wasn't allowed.  Also, I wasn't very good at things like softball and volleyball but I always loved to skate. I skated, hula hooped, played on the swings and rode my bike when possible.  Being at home was sorta like being in hell.  I read lots and lots and lots of books.  My nose was buried in them all through my childhood and into my teens.  I listened to countless hours of punk rock, hip hop and gospel. I know first hand that words are powerful and I want to be a person who uses words for the good of humanity. Any hoo, what I'm trying to say is that when I was growing up it seemed like the media only saw fit to show certain types of people doing certain types of things, none of which interested or inspired me. With the Web, at least you can have A voice and you have the potential for others to listen to you. Why not use it frequently and wisely? These days, I practice weekly with the Fresh Meat of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls. To see why I chose my skate name: Gal VanIZed, read my welcome post. I may have found out about roller derby a little too late in life to be competitive but I plan to stay on the roller derby scene for years to come. Oh, and for those of you who need to know the particulars about me professionally, my real (married) name is Sheri Zampelli. Before that, I was Sheri Olson. I have a master's degree in counseling and a bachelor's in psychology. I've written two books: From Sabotage to Success and Donate Your Weight and I'm a public speaker. I teach part-time at Long Beach City College and I'm a hypnotist. I have a Donate Your Weight podcast and I'm thinking of starting a From Sabotage to Success podcast as well. I hypnotize people in my Long Beach, CA office. Give a call if I can help you relieve some stress or acheive an important goal: (562) 305-3434

Welcome to Sheri Zampelli.com – Get Gal VanIZed

Skating in Fresh Meat Practice, Showing off my Push the Button sticker from the Chemical BrothersThank you for visiting Sheri Zampelli.com. Sheri Zampelli's theme is to Get Gal VanIZed which alternately means come alive and get animated. So many of us get stuck in lifeless routines. Year after year we move farther away from our true selves and we lose touch with joy, the ideal emotion for accessing the Law of Attraction. We make rigid rules and regulations for ourselves or just as bad, we blindly follow the rules established by other people. Sometimes these rules are counter-productive to who we are. This year, Sheri Zampelli proclaimed a Gal VanIZed presidential inauguration which entails being the president in your own life. This is in honor of our newly elected U.S. President, Barack Obama. Obama's message is that We Are One and we must work together to get things done. The work Get Gal VanIZed would like to contribute is to inspire and remind others to live their best life. We believe each person is like a piece of a puzzle and if we all do our best at what's in front of us and try to contribute to this world in a positive way it will have a powerful, life-transforming ripple effect on everyone.
