ABC Won’t Run Clean Air Commercial. See it here.

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

It’s easy to think that just ’cause you “saw it on the news” it must be true. What is true is that advertising pays for media. The reason T.V. is “free” is because advertisers foot the bill, but they want something in return. They want your allegiance and your money. Make sure you get all the facts before you “buy” whatever the mass media wants to sell you. Send ABC a letter telling them you want them to air this commercial. It will make a difference, eventually.

Don’t Smoke That Cigarette Here Please – Smoking and the Cultural Shift

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

In our Prevention and Education Class (HS255) we talked about cultural shifts regarding smoking cigarettes. We talked about how as early as 20 years ago you could smoke anywhere you wanted, anytime, even airplanes and busses. Cigarette ads were everywhere and cigarette companies used to publicly sponsor events.

Fast forward 20 years to attitudes about smoking today. They have changed drastically.

I have been a concert goer for 25 years. I grew up smoking cigarettes in clubs. I had a cigarette holder with a clasp. Sometimes I used one of those “sexy” cigarette holders just like Audrey Hepburn. Smoking was a part of my wardrobe. Yet, this weekend, at the Nine Inch Nails concert when one bored man sitting near me decided to light up, I immediately wanted to flee.

Many people, smokers and non-smokers alike express a similar sentiment when subjected to smoking in public. How and why does a shift like this happen? Well, for starters, you might want to pick up a book titled The Tipping Point because I think it explains everything.

On another note, I quit smoking by using hypnosis and now I hypnotize people to quit smoking (among other things). So, it is only natural for me to end here and leave you with a very popular and socially acceptable form of hypnosis: recorded information played repeatedly.

Notice how singer Tex Williams isn’t upset with the dangers or smell of cigarettes, only the fact that they take up so much time and that he’s tired of waiting for people to get another smoke. Today you can’t see anything related to smoking without also hearing how bad it is for you. That’s the power of lobbying and repetition at work. Enjoy the video!

Embedded Suggestions and Live Music = Hypnosis

Zeke plays at Alex\'s Bar in Long BeachOne of my day job’s is to teach part-time at Long Beach City College. This semester my classes include Alcohol Education and Prevention, Introduction to Addictive Behaviors and Introduction to Victimology. I was talking to students about my recent trip to a local bar to see live music. Since my husband is the photographer, we get there pretty early to set things up.

This Saturday, part of the set up included plastering Camel advertising everywhere. Two cigarette shaped light boxes, a couple of banners, all cups and napkins had Camel logos as did the bar caddys and spill pads. To exemplify my point, I have a pictoral demonstration.

As you can see, it is impossible to watch the band without also constantly seeing the Camel logo Humpers at Alex\'s Bar in Long Beach from your peripheral vision. We’ll be talking about the impact of advertising and brand name placement in future classes.
