Galvanized Facebook Friday – 05-06-11 – Beastie Boys, Hot Sauce and Music at The Sky Room

The theme of music and dancing has been well established in my life now. It seems there is no turning back to the incredibly serious and stoic life-path I had planned for myself. Just in time, the Beastie Boys have come out with a new album - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two. The Beastie Boys, with their trailblazing, tongue-in-cheek, "be your own person" style have always inspired me to dance and to march to the beat of my own rhythm. When I'm not able to dance, I listen in my car and sing out loud. Here's a little compilation video I made of me driving in the car listening to the Beastie Boys but lucky for you...I'm not signing along.

Not only did I get to enjoy the recorded sounds of the Beastie Boys but I got to enjoy some live music and a night on the town with my husband. For both of us it was the first time at the famous Sky Room in Long Beach. I must say the view is breathtaking and the club had a great vibe. In the elevator ride on the way up we learned a little history about the Sky Room. For example, it was "a rendezvous for luminaries such as Elizabeth Taylor, Nicky Hilton, Charles Lindberg, Babe Ruth, Merle Oberon, Clark Gable, John Wayne, Errol Flynn, Cary Grant, and other celebrities." Here are a few photos from the evening. We were celebrating Linda Leek's birthday and I got to hang out with some cool, creative, musicians and artists including jazz singer Linda Saito, aka Linderella.

I'm loving the way I keep getting opportunities to enjoy music and dance and I'm looking forward to what's next.

New Beastie Boys Album Released Today – Hot Sauce Committee Part Two

Galvanized Facebook Friday 02-04-11 – Music, Technology and Memory Lane

There are so many things to listen to and see these days. I recently got a Roku player that allows me to not only watch streaming Netflix but to watch YouTube videos on my TV, to tune into iTunes Podcasts on my TV and to listen to alternative radio from San Francisco via SomaFM (I like the Groove Salad myself). As mind-blowing as all that is/was, the thing that excited me the most this week was discovering an episode of Soul Train from the 80's with appearances from Run DMC and Dazz. In the same episode, a boy named Jesse made a "wish" with a then relatively small organization called, "Make a Wish Foundation" to dance on Soul Train. Jesse was 9 and had luekemia and this boy could bust a move. Needless to say, I pressed "keep until I delete" on my Tivo so I can watch this again and again. Here's a video of the interview Run DMC did on Soul Train.

After watching this episode, it got me thinking about the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest. That sent me looking for a good Beastie Boys tune to listen to. I chose High Plains Drifter. One of the things I love about Hip Hop is the storytelling aspect and how the artists weave so many associations into one song. This video demonstrates visually how many tie-ins you can cram into one song. I used to listen to all these songs over and over again trying to figure out all the references and innuendos.

All this "trippin'" down memory lane reminded me of how my brothers and I used to dance to Yo MTV Raps and how one of my brothers was dedicated enough to get cardboard, lay it out in the driveway and practice break dancing moves...yes, to Run DMC and maybe even Grand Master Flash if I remember correctly. Or maybe that was ME. Yes, I went to see Grand Master Flash twice in Hollywood in the 80's. An experience worth remembering. My brothers and I had a lot of fun growing up thanks to music and still to this day we enjoy listening to old-school rap and hip hop at family reunions. I am especially entertained as I watch the looks on people's faces when I tell them that. Have a great weekend and get galvanized!

Visualize ‘Smashing Apart’ Cancer Cells with The Beastie Boys

Today I got an e-mail from Adam Yauch of The Beastie Boys (read it below). He's calling on all fans to meditate twice a day and visualize "smashing apart all of the cancer cells in the world." Hmmmm. That would be nice. For those of you who don't know, Adam Yauch was diagnosed with throat cancer in July, 2009. Below is a video of his public announcement.

hello, wanted to send this out to you guys in case you were into it, or wanted to give it to anyone who you think might be. a few friends and i are meditating at the same time twice a day. 9:30am and 6:30pm eastern standard time, for about an hour and half. we are picturing smashing apart all of the cancer cells in the world. we are visualizing taking the energy away from the cancer, and then sending it back at the cancer as lightening bolts that will break apart the DNA and RNA of the cells. if you have the time, please join us in whipping up this lightening storm. mind over matter...... if you prefer to sit then sit, but if you are not used to meditating, or sitting quietly doesn't sound like fun, put on some music and dance while you do the visualization, and if you want to do it at some other time, or picture curing some other illness that's fine too. yoko will be joining the meditation by visualizing all of us dancing with joy to celebrate the world without cancer. all variations are welcome. this is really just being done with a wish for all beings to be cured of all illnesses and to find true lasting happiness. i'll also be saying prayers for the earthquake victims in tibet, so join in on that if you can too. please feel free to pass this onto anyone who you think may find it interesting. with all my love, adam yauch P.S. This week's 'song' is a medley of Beastie Boys tunes featuring guest appearances from P. Diddy and Q-Tip. On July 20 the Beastie Boys released a video on YouTube announcing that they would need to delay their tour and the release of their new record (Hot Sauce Committee Part 1) because Adam "MCA" Yauch discovered that he had a form of cancer in his parotid gland and needed surgery. The Official Laugh Tour/ Long Beach Marathon iPod Playlist

Music is the imeptus for much of what I do, so to leave it out of the equation is like stripping the color out of a photograph, it simply lacks something. Last week Trainer on the Corner (T.O.C.) and I went on a Laugh Tour. We posted signs that say "Laugh" all over Belmont Shore. There was a soundtrack that carried me through the entire experience, from stepping down my front porch steps with skates on, to skating up and down 2nd Street spreading laughter, to sitting at Archibald's drinking ice cold Lemonade. I left the house listening to Holiday in Cambodia by the Dead Kennedys off Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death. On my way to T.O.C.'s house I listened to Police Brutality by The Sky Beneath off The Floor and went a little faster than comfortable all the way down the bumpy asphalt hills. I had to take a side turn to slow myself down.

As I waited for T.O.C. to come downstairs and put on his skates I listened to The Wizard Turns On by the Flaming Lips off At War with the Mystics and flew down 2nd St. listening to Under My Thumb by Social Distortion off Mainliner and Fat Boys by Sport Doen off Never Mind Aerobics Here's Punk Rope.

We had to make a stop at Mailboxes Etc. I heard The Way You Move (Feat. Sleepy Brown) and, Knowing both by Big Boi off Speakerboxxx, followed by Spybreak! by Propellerheads off Decksandrumsandrockandroll. As we skated and handed out fliers and laughed and posed for pictures, I kept my iPod going at a low but audible volume as I heard Comicstripteasegirl by Stereo Total off Juke-Box Alarm, So Whatcha Want (feat. B-Real) by the Beastie Boys off Dr. Numbers Presents Still Ill, Anti-Pop by Kommunity FK off The Vision and the Voice and Take Me Higher by Peshay.

It's always good to have Gratitude, especially when It's delivered by the Beastie Boys off Check Your Head. The tunes continued with Tequila Dub by Sly and Robbie off Maximum Dub, Pat-Trip Dispenser by The Fall, Everything's Gone Green by New Order, Normal (Is a Million Miles Away) by the Groovie Ghoulies off Springman Records Sampler and Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones. As we came to the end of our journey, we headed to Archibalds for some ice cold lemonade. As we left Archibald's and skated home I heard Insane In the Brain by Cypress Hill, Make Love by Daft Punk off Human After All, and Only Child by Patrick Mata off Hydro Carbons from a Meteorite. It was a hot day. 95 degrees by the time we got home. But the joy we shared for those few hours was well worth the time and energy.
