A New Earth and Getting Right with Your Body

A New Earth on Amazon
Ekhart Tolle's book, A New Earth can help you to release the unconscious need to be overweight. There are many factors that go into a weight problem but if you struggle with weight and eating and you have done so for many years, you may be dealing with a subconscious need to stay overweight. Sounds crazy probably but it's true for many people. Here are some examples why having a weight problem can come in handy and dropping the pounds can be scary: ** You were sexually assaulted and somehow you got the idea that it happened because of your appearance. The subconscious mind concludes that if your become unattractive, you will be safe from future assualts. ** At one point in your life you were slender and you got a lot of unwanted sexual attention. You didn't want that kind of attention and/or you wanted people to notice the "you" beneath your appearances. At a subconscious level, you believe that keeping extra weight helps you to find the people who love you for who you are not just what you look like. ** You grew up with a believe that people who are "sexy" or all wrapped up in their appearance are "shallow", "stupid", "weak" or any other number of characteristics you don't want to be. Your subconscious mind believes that if you become "sexy" you will have to also adopt these less-than-desirable characteristics and you don't want to so you stay heavy. There are many, many more. Perhaps you have a few of your own. The point is, unless you change those subconscious beliefs, you will always struggle and/or you will always need to struggle. Even if the size and shape of your body changes, you will continue to hold on to the mental anguish and eventually your weight will climb up to an undesirable number. In addition to reading books like A New Earth, I recommend hypnosis as a great way to change subconscious beliefs. I have created a CD called It's Safe To Be Thin to help people with overcoming some of the beliefs listed above. There are a total of 4 Donate Your Weight CD's available. How to Galvanize Your Mind at Jury Duty

On Friday, I blogged about my experience at jury duty and how I was able to transform it from dreadful to adventurous with the help of an iPod, a book, a paper, a pen and the willingness to open my mind. I was reading my book, Cash in a Flash and decided to do one of the exercises from the book right there in the jury duty waiting room. Part of what that entailed was to open my mind to my surroundings rather than continue listening to the stories my mind likes to repeat. I did it and amazingly, on the spot, my experience of jury duty shifted and I felt like I was in an airport terminal or bus station. I listed all the things I knew I had in common with at least one person in the room. I decided to use jury duty as a way to wake up and get connected to a bigger picture. Here's my list: 1. I am an author. 2. I've been a squatter. 3. I am a daughter. 4. I am a woman. 5. I am part of the gene pool. 6. I am a niece. 7. I have a story. 8. I am a step-daughter. 9. I am an aunt. 10. I am a teacher. 11. I am a member of the human race. 12. I am serving jury duty. 13. I don't get to do what I usually do. 14. I read books and magazines and newspapers. 19. I have a mobile device. 20. I surf the web. 21. I listen to music. 22. I hang out with musicians. 23. I like the DIY (Do It Yourself) movement. 24. Joy Division – Vibrational Energy Healing from the 80′s

Meditating in a pink dressThese days self-help gurus are available on any street corner in L.A. The healing industry is blossoming. But as with any trend, many of the newcomers on the scene simply imitate and modify their predecessor's style rather than create something entirely unique. So, many healers adopt certain characteristics: dreadlocks, cotton clothes, raw food, yoga mats, etc. But me, I grew up listening to the Ramones and G.B.H. I slammed in the pit when the Circle Jerks played at Perkins Palace in 1983. I dyed my hair blue. I tried out for roller derby. I'm just not the type to go for linen and wood beads in the lotus position. It's too much of a stretch. The great news is, I finally figured out I don't have to look like anything or eat a certain way to have personal enlightenment. I can do it without paying a guru hundreds of dollars per session. Because here's what it is: It's all energy. If your energy is clear and clean, meaning no judgment, no fear, no criticism and if you can live in the moment - not the past or the future - you are experiencing enlightenment. At least I think that's what Eckhart Tolle and Marianne Williamson are trying to say. When you are aware of what you are doing, you can begin to see how one event leads to another. I blog about this stuff all the time but one of the recent examples I can think of is when I went to see my favorite band, Naked Raygun for free. They are from Chicago but just happened to be playing less than 2 miles from my house at Alex's Bar in Long Beach, CA, USA. The drummer, Eric Spicer called me on my cell phone to set it up. That felt like a synchronistic positive, flowing chain of events that lead to favorable outcome for all involved (read the complete story on my mog). Joy DivisionSo, who says you have to burn incense, light candles and chant to feel connected? Not me. I'm sitting here listening to Joy Division, just like I used to when I was 16 and guess what? I feel like I'm 16. I don't mean I feel intensely insecure, moody and impulsive, I mean I feel raw. I feel alert and aware and connected. The bass guitar from She's Lost Control resonates with my cells. I can remember what it felt like when I listened to this song every day of my teen life. How many times did I lip synch the words, "She's Lost Control again"? 1,000? 5,000? more? When I listen to the tunes of my youth, I see how every experience I encounter is building me and how I react to them is building me as well. I started forgetting that by the time I was 21. I closed in on myself. I was stuck in hell. The hell of hating my body, hating myself and feeling disconnected from everything. I think roller derby might of knocked some sense into me, it got me back to feeling my body and having to learn to react to my surroundings. I skated with the LA Derby Dolls for about 1 year as a fresh meat. Even though I never got on a team, the experience changed the way I live my life. So, if you're just not quite down with colonics, whole food and hemp shoes, try digging out your old records or buying some of your old favorites on iTunes. Maybe join roller derby? Whatever you choose, remember to sit back, soak it all in and live a little. (If you need music suggestions, I regularly post playlists and I post a song of the week from Michael Zampelli. Check out some of the tunes on this site and see if they put a pep in your step.) In this article you'll see a picture of my Joy Division LP I just took the other day. See how worn out it is? I played it every single day. And you know what? All those years I never knew what Ian Curtis looked like. So I looked it up on YouTube and it was so cool to, in a sense, relive that time of my life. It wasn't all peaches and cream back then but it was an incredibly free spirited and creative time and I don't think there's anything wrong with that. P.S. Holosynch CD's use sound waves to heal the brain and create awareness. They have a free demo CD available on their website. You listen with headphones and it will help with anxiety and depression as well as addictive behavior. Check it out.

Eckhart Tolle Would Probably Endorse Third Rock From The Sun

A New Earth by Eckhart TolleI was just reading from A New Earth and Eckhart Tolle is writing about television. Tolle states, "There are some programs that have been extremely helpful to many people; have changed their lives for the better, opened their heart, made them more conscious. Even some comedy shows, although they may be about nothing in particular, can be unintentionally spiritual by showing a caricature version of human folly and the ego. They teach us not to take anything too seriously, to approach life in a lighthearted way, and above all, they teach by making us laugh." This is an indirect promotion of Third Rock From The Sun, trust me. I purchased the entire 6-Season set on DVD recently. I've gradually watched every episode in the first five seasons and I'm getting ready to crack open season 6. Third Rock From The Sun Season 4The final episode in season 4 - The Big Giant Headache (Part II), exemplifies the genius of this show. This episode slaps the face of all things conventional. From beginning to end it exposes the ridiculous nature of all we have come to hold near and dear in traditional culture. It shines a light on all the silly roles that trap us. For those of you who've never seen Third Rock, its a sitcom about a family of aliens whose mission is to understand humans and life on earth. Although they reside in adult bodies, they haven't been trained in the ways of US culture. Their behavior is that you which you would expect from someone age 13 or younger. The Big Giant Headache (Part II) episode starts with Dr. Dick Solomon (the mission's high commander, played by John Lithgow) waking up from what he thinks is a nightmare, but it's not. The Big Giant Head (played by William Shatner) has demoted Dick and made Sally the new high commander. Dick repeatedly makes sure to let Sally know that she only got the job because she has a hot body. The Big Giant Head confirms that what Dick says is true but reassures Sally, "Don't get me wrong, I promoted you because I thought you'd be the best possible candidate to give me pleasure." The entire show puts a comedic spin on the concept of power roles and the awkward traditions we have come to think of as "normal" in male/female relationships but its so funny to watch that its difficult to find time for defensiveness. As an added bonus, you will get to see William Shatner sing Close to You by The Carpenters in his now famous, priceline.com style just before he beams himself and Vickie Dupcheck up to his bachelor pod for a Jr. Prom after-party. If that doesn't make you laugh, I don't know what will.

Thank God for Nature’s Reminders

Pink FlowerI, like many Americans am feeling the impact of this down economy. At the same time, I know it's important to keep my thoughts focused on what I want and to avoid worry. I have gained some solace by looking to nature for answers. My friend Rev. Ahman just gave me a copy of A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. The first few pages of the book are dedicated to the evolution of life on our planet. Tolle notes that the color and fragrance of flowers are a symbol of the invisible realm. He writes, "As the consciousness of human beings developed, flowers were most likely the first thing they came to value that had no utilitarian purpose for them, that is to say, was not linked in some way to survival. They provided inspiration to countless artists, poets, and mystics." So, in honor of acknowledging the unseen force that created flowers; the force that moves up through the soil and causes a flower to bloom, I clipped these lilies from my garden and placed them in a vase that my brother gave me in celebration of my open house two years ago. If I take time to notice, the flower and the vase together remind me of hope and right now, that's the kind of reminder I need the most.
