6 Minute Office Exercise (Guest Post by Dr. Marjorie Miles)

As we begin the New Year, I know many people are resolving to exercise more regularly. Let's release the old excuse of "no time" by enjoying 6 exercises for 1 minute a piece designed to do at work! Naturally, you can do them at home, too. Yes, you can even space them out, doing a single exercise for 1 minute...then later do another exercise for 1 minute, etc. until you have completed all 6. Remember, all exercise is cumulative, so you can also do several 6 minute sessions throughout the day. Make it fun and part of a daily routine. Keep track of your exercise regime on your Donate Your Weight Success Checklist and reward yourself. To learn the 6 exercises, click here Enjoy! Dr. Marjorie Miles, DCH is a Donate Your Weight Coach and author of Dream Doors you can find out more about her work at http://www.journeyofyourdreams.com

Roller Derby Makes Women Feel Invincible on Oprah

pitaThis week Oprah sent 4 women to the Doll Factory in Los Angeles to learn roller derby skills and "break out of the box." L.A. Derby Dolls trainer Alex Cohen (AKA Axels of Evil) trained the women in basic derby skills. Then, they experienced the thrill of assuming roller derby alter egos and going up against L.A. Derby Doll veterans such as P.I.T.A., Gori Spelling, Judy Gloom and Razor Slut. The women left the experience with an "I can do anything" attitude. See video at Oprah.com

Ellen Page on Women, Roller Derby and “Whip It”

Ellen Page and Alia Shawkat take time for a behind the scenes interview about Drew Barrymore's "Whip It" at the Toronto International Film Festival. This interview captures the spirit of roller derby which includes team spirit, feminism, fun, diversity and a DIY culture. Page talks about how much she loved the "Whip It" script and working with director, Drew Barrymore. She especially likes how the movie sends a positive message for young women to accept themselves as they are. "We have a constant saturation in the media, especially with stories about women that involve a lot of judgment and a lot of nastiness" Page said. "Here's an atmosphere where women...can be really aggressive and that's okay...but also have this sense of camaraderie, you know; beat the crap out of each other and then go have beers afterwards, and laugh about it and to really be there for each other and to have a world that's just judgementless. And that's pretty nice." I agree, that is pretty nice. That's why it's worth it to go see this movie and take a young woman that you care about. Opens in theaters on October 2. ‘Get off the Treadmill Feeling Pumped Up’ Playlist

I've discovered that if I want to make exercise a healthy habit, it must be fun. One of the ways I fun it up is to listen to music that rocks my body and soul. This is the iPod playlist I enjoyed tonight, on my treadmill, rockin' to the beat. Warning, if you're over 40 or easily disturbed by loud music with a solid beat, click away from this page while you can. If you're under 40 or have a young mind, click away and get ready to rock! (All links go to iTunes). Speaking of fun, here's a video of someone who hasn't quite mastered the art of dancing on the treadmill at high speeds. Watch his flip flops go flyin' at the end. Then, once you're done laughing, get on the treadmill and have fun. Stay safe! Long Beach Roller Derby Video from The District Weekly

Long Beach Roller Derby from District Weekly on Vimeo.

About a month ago I posted about a fun skate out I went on with a group from Moxi Roller Skate Shop. It was titled "I Took the Hill, It Didn't Take Me - Conquering Fear on Roller Skates". I tried to describe the hill we went down and the speed we picked up but I didn't have an adequate video or photo to accompany the story. Well, the video has now been posted at the District Weekly. It includes documentation of skating down the Cherry Beach hill as well as information about the up-and-coming Long Beach Roller Derby league. Check it out.
