The Story Behind Peace One Day – Celebrate on September 21

Jeremy Gilley is an independent documentary filmmaker and the founder and chairman of Peace One Day. Frustrated by the amount of violence he witnessed in the world, Gilley decided to make a film about peace. It was then that he realized there was no day dedicated to peace and he set out to create one. Gilley traveled with world and met with political leaders to discuss the idea of a world peace day with a fixed calendar date of September 21st. Peace One Day was officially launched at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in 1999. On September 7, 2001 a global cease-fire was unanimously adopted in the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York establishing the United Nations International Day of Peace as an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. This would be a day where residents of war-torn countries could gain access to vaccinations and food distribution that was impossible during a state of war. Last year an estimated 100 million people participated in Peace Day. 1.4 million people were vaccinated in Afghanistan. This year's goal is 1.8 million vaccinations. Peace day has been adopted by every member state of the United Nations. It is supported by Angelina Golie, Paul McCartney, Dali Lama, Annie Lennox, Kate Nash, David Bentley, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Martin of Coldplay, James Morrison, Ben and Jerry, Christian Slater, Peter Gabriel, Bryan Adams, John Legend, Nobel Peace Laureate Shimon Peres, Mary Robinson, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan at UN Headquarters and more. You have a few days to plan a way to get behind Peace Day and help it grow. My goal is to do something to create peace in my world and to give my students extra credit for participating in Peace Day and writing about it. What will you do to make peace on September 21? Log your commitment on their website. Peace.

Female Rapper Roxanne Shanté Gets Stiffed on Royalties – Warner Music Pays for Her PhD

New York Daily news published an article titled Rapper behind 'Roxanne's Revenge' gets Warner Music to pay for Ph.D on August 23, 2009. Watch Roxanne's Revenge on YouTube. It's a great story of how persistence and determination paid off for Shanté. Despite the fact that the record company tried to stiff her out of all her royalties, they couldn't find a way to deny the clause in her contract that stated they would pay for her education for life. The result, Shanté got a PhD in Psychology at Cornell to the price tag of $217,000 and now she's using her education and rapping/hip hop skills to help urban African-American's express their angst through non-traditional counseling methods. She helps clients to "unleash their inner MC and shout out exactly what's on their mind". Read the entire article at NewYorkDailyNews.com.

Life is The Only Thing Worth Living For

old_fliersToday my brother sent me an e-mail with the title : "flipper next weekend in sf -- i'm there!" I immediately got excited for him and a tad bit jealous and then, the bass line for "Life" started playing in my head. I had to run to my iTunes and crank it up. No truer words have been spoken: Life is the only thing worth living for. Of course I couldn't help to also reminisce about the roadtrip I took with my friends in the 80's. We drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco and our soul mission was a see Flipper. (See the yellow flyer from the show in the photo above which I still cherish). Mission accomplished and well worth sleeping in the car for :) Here's the video from YouTube, granted, the visuals are lacking but close your eyes and listen and you'll get the picture. Or, better yet, keep your eyes wide open and scream along. I included the lyrics below. Lyrics for Life I too have sung death's praises But I'm not gonna sing that song anymore 'Cause I've found out what living is all about and its Life! Life! Life is the only thing worth living for Yeah life! life! Life is the only thing worth... Life! life! (I know it has its ups and downs) . . itunes_iconBuy Life by Flipper on iTunes See Flipper live in San Francisco with Toiling Midgets and Savage Republic at Café Du Nord.
