Ideally your Master Mind group operates like a healthy family or successful team that works together efficiently. The group dynamics can sometimes help you become aware of your own issues. Sometimes members can remind you of disowned parts of your self and drive you crazy. You can learn a lot if you're willing to face the truth about yourself. In some cases, you can get as much enlightenment and relief (or more) that you would with a therapist-lead, traditional therapy group. A Master Mind group helps you take care of your life which has numerous needs to attend to such as financial, health, legal, family, fitness and more. If any one of those needs is ignored for too long, problems will ensue. Being involved in a Master Mind group will help you keep on top of things and create a balanced life. Sometimes the context we meet people in dictates the part of our ego-self we present to others. For example, we might not be comfortable expressing certain aspects of ourselves to certain people. We think we need to protect ourselves. Being in a Master Mind group provides a sense of freedom to learn about yourself and to change at your own pace. I'll admit, it's not always sunshine and roses what you learn. I had a group member named Cindy who "outdid" me and I was ashamed and jealous. Watching her forced me to come face to face with the ways I was obstructing my own progress. I had some emotional issues to deal with and I didn't want to. Eventually it became clear that I had to face those issues if I wanted to have the strength and dignity to carry on. I kept going to weekly meetings even though I felt uncomfortable and I started to take steps to get out of emotional funk. I'm so grateful I was faced with that challenge because my life is truly better than ever as a result. One of the downfalls with collecting a group of people is that eventually they break off into cliques. When a group is small, the entire group can become it's own "clique". This doesn't allow a lot of room for personal growth because members will conform to the group norm versus exploring their individuality. So, who do you choose to be in your group and how do you choose them? Is it better to have a little or a lot in common with other members? In my experience, it's more effective if you know very little about your prospective group members because then you are free of expectations and stereotypes about them and they won't keep you bound to your past because they don't know the entire history of your ups and downs. Before I started my very first Master Mind group, I met with "Larry", a man who had many years of Master Mind experience. He gave me several bits of advice. One thing he said was that mixed sex groups are not recommended and neither is a group of family members recommended. The main thing that each person in a Master Mind group should have in common is a vested interest in having a Master Mind group and the willingness to show up and to support others. It is not necessary for these members to have similar lifestyles, or religious beliefs. What's more important is to find people who will show up. You can't have a group without people. The reason Larry said not to have a mixed sex group is so there will be no hidden agenda between group members. Also, mixed sex groups and groups with family members have the same potential downfall: we bound people to stereotypes and we bound ourselves to the stereotypes other people have about us. Read Part 1 Begin by focusing on a feasible goal that you are willing to work towards. For example, if you are afraid to strive for a better job then start by updating your resume. Since you need a resume to get a new job, updating it is an important step towards your goal. If you have been wanting to start an exercise program, begin with small steps like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, parking your car farther away and walking to your office. Walk to the grocery store or Post Office instead of driving. Once you get used to walking, increase your goal to walking one mile, three days a week. Later you may decide to go even higher. In the meantime, you adjust to exercise and it becomes a part of your life. It will become a habit and when you don't do it, you'll feel as though something is missing from your life. If you want to go back to school start with buying a course catalog, filing out the application or having your transcripts sent to you. If you want to communicate better with others start by practicing your communication skills with a supportive friend or spending time each day visualizing yourself as a successful communicator. If you want to change your eating habits, start by cutting out one food item at a time. When you are successful at one portion of your goal you can strive for the next level. Achieving goals on a step-by-step basis, helps you to dip your feet into the success pool a little at a time. As you get comfortable with one level and step in deeper, you adjust accordingly. Don’t set yourself up for failure by starting with a goal that is overwhelming and fearful.

I was reading from The Life Guide by Robert Ashton and I came across this quote. I think it accurately addresses the importance of building a community.

"You can either struggle on your own or become more persuasive and encourage other people to help you."

Are you asking for help? I am, but only after years of clinging to the belief that I had to do it all myself. I'll have to admit, I'm so new to the concept of asking for help that it feels weird sometimes. I feel like a baby learning to walk. I'm wobbling, I'm falling down, I'm bumping into things. But I've come to a conclusion about that: So what. If I eventually learn, that's all that really matters.

Trying to tough it out on your own definitely leads to unnecessary struggle. People actually WANT to help. All you have to do is ask. A great way to start is to form your own Master Mind group.
