In November 2008 I wrote a blog about how
XM Radio decided to yank punk rock off their programming line up and I posted a link to
a petition to get punk rock back on XM/Sirius satelite radio. In the meantime, I need my punk rock NOW so luckily I discovered Pandora where I can listen to hours of old-school punk rock with minimal advertising for free.
The system at Pandora literally allows you to make customized stations that include only the music YOU want to hear. Initially I named my channel G.B.H. Radio and only had G.B.H. as the artist. Nonetheless, the system intuitively figured that I would also like things similar to G.B.H. so this is a sampling of what I got (all links go to iTunes).
Catch 23 by G.B.H.
Bloodstains by Agent Orange
Society's Victims by Discharge
Joshua's Song by Bad Brains
Think again by Minor Threat
Soup Kitchen by D.R.I.
Rat Race by Aggression
Race Against Time by G.B.H.
Rise Above by Black Flag
War Inside My Head by Suicidal Tendencies
America the Beautiful by D.O.A.

Then I realized after a few hours of listening that I was hearing songs being repeated so I changed my channel name to Punk Rock Radio and added the Ramones, Circle Jerks, Minor Threat, The Exploited and more using Pandora's automated "Add Variety" option. It only took a few minutes to create my own punk rock broadcasting system. I also like the feature where you can give songs a "thumbs down" and that song won't be played again on your channel.
Come listen to my punk rock channel on Pandora or
visit my profile. While you're there, you can open an account and create your own channels. Pandora can also be used on the iPhone.
