‘Funkin’ Long Beach Sundown Walk’ Playlist
Monday, August 31st, 2009
I just walked in the door after an hour long walk on the beach. It was sundown and Long Beachians were buzzing around on the boardwalk staying active and fit. They were on skates, they were on bikes, they were on foot. Some were in pairs, girlfriends keeping each other up to date on the latest, a father and his son riding bikes.
Some were alone, just them and their iPod. I was in the latter category of people, rocking out to my favorite tunes and taking in the scenery as if I was watching a movie.
My 'bring it on home' song was Dazz by Brick (video here), one of my favorite funk songs, a song I did not hear at the Long Beach Funk Fest this weekend.
Here are the other songs that laid the soundtrack for a spectacular, energizing walk in Long Beach. (All links go to iTunes, enjoy).
Chronic Generation by Chron Gen
Sexy Hypnotist by Luscious Jackson
TV Baby by Magazine
Bud (Rootless Mix) by Salt Peter
I Don't Wanna be Learned - I Don't Wanna be Tamed by the Ramones

The Mating Game by Bitter:Sweet
Yeah by (?) from the Heavy off the Richter mix tape

A Modern Midnight Conversation by Chemical Brothers
If you think your music matches my style. I want to hear from you.

‘Get off the Treadmill Feeling Pumped Up’ Playlist
Sunday, August 30th, 2009
I've discovered that if I want to make exercise a healthy habit, it must be fun. One of the ways I fun it up is to listen to music that rocks my body and soul. This is the iPod playlist I enjoyed tonight, on my treadmill, rockin' to the beat. Warning, if you're over 40 or easily disturbed by loud music with a solid beat, click away from this page while you can. If you're under 40 or have a young mind, click away and get ready to rock! (All links go to iTunes).
Speaking of fun, here's a video of someone who hasn't quite mastered the art of dancing on the treadmill at high speeds. Watch his flip flops go flyin' at the end. Then, once you're done laughing, get on the treadmill and have fun. Stay safe!

Punker Than Thou iPod Playlist
Sunday, November 16th, 2008
Today I was doing all kinds of fun things like sweeping the cobwebs out of the closet, helping my husband set a rat trap in the cellar and folding laundry. I needed some music to carry me through.
I looked at a stack of CD's I pulled out recently. Some are compliation CD's my husband made when he used to have a radio show at KBEACH.
So, what does the guy who used to own Zed Records save after 25+ years of supplying alternative and punk music to all of Southern California and parts of England? Here's a sample from a CD he titled "Punker Than Thou".
Most links go to iTunes.
Where possible I linked directly to the song but punk like this isn't always for sale on iTunes. Some things never change. But did you know that even if you are a dinky band with no money you can sell your stuff on CDBaby.net and they can get you on iTunes. Check it out. When I couldn't find the music on iTunes, I tried to put a link to YouTube or MySpace.
**Wasted and Nervous Breakdown by Black Flag
**Sid Vicious Was Innocent by Guttermouth
**I Wanna Call Someone by Pressure
**Powerfail and the Power of Dolemite by Agoraphobic Nosebleed
**Bob Dobbs by ??? We can't figure it out. Do you know of a song named Bob Dobbs by a punk band with a female singer? The single is here someplace.
**Fuck You That's Why by Smut Peddlers (What better reason could there be?)
**Heart Cooks Brain, Trailer Trash and Polar Opposites by Modest Mouse
**Unbelievable Things by Superchunk
**Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For by Negativland
**U2's lost song by Negativland. Click on the play button below to hear beloved American radio icon Casey Kasum lose his temper and curse like a truck driver. Just goes to show you, things aren't always what they appear to be ;)
.

.
.
**Copper by Shellac
**Lorna Doom and On a Rope by Rocket from the Crypt off their Live EP
**Kitchen Cantata by Pink Chunk (There were only 1,000 copies of this single made. It doesn't look like anyone on the internet has posted an Mp3 or images. Let's just say it's a "song" where some guy bangs on pots and pans while his dog whines in the background).
**It's Hard by Plummet Airlines
**Virginia Plain by Roxy Music. (My husband got a rare, unique copy of this on acetate for his brithday way back.)

Sunday, October 12th, 2008
Today, I strapped on my skates and headed down to Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach to check out the final stretch of the Long Beach Marathon. It ends up, I live very close to the 25 mile mark. I called T.O.C. to see if he wanted to come shoot some video but he wasn't around.
So, these phone photos are all I got. It was really fun to skate fast down the middle of a major boulevard. On any given day, hundreds of thousands of cars travel this 4-lane thoroughway. But today, the space was reserved for runners, cyclists and volunteers. Here's a photo of me with one of the volunteers who passed out water. She was a gem and of course she offered me a cup of water after this photo was shot.
I skated from just before the 25 mile mark to the 26 mile mark and back. I cheered the runners and made celebratory noises while listening to my iPod. My playlist for today is almost exactly the same as the one from Laugh Tour. Hey, it worked once, why not try it again.

Sunday, October 12th, 2008
Music is the imeptus for much of what I do, so to leave it out of the equation is like stripping the color out of a photograph, it simply lacks something.
Last week Trainer on the Corner (T.O.C.) and I went on a Laugh Tour. We posted signs that say "Laugh" all over Belmont Shore. There was a soundtrack that carried me through the entire experience, from stepping down my front porch steps with skates on, to skating up and down 2nd Street spreading laughter, to sitting at Archibald's drinking ice cold Lemonade. Here it is. All links go to iTunes where you can sample or buy the song.
I left the house listening to Holiday in Cambodia by the Dead Kennedys off Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death. On my way to T.O.C.'s house I listened to Police Brutality by The Sky Beneath off The Floor and went a little faster than comfortable all the way down the bumpy asphalt hills. I had to take a side turn to slow myself down.
As I waited for T.O.C. to come downstairs and put on his skates I listened to The Wizard Turns On by the Flaming Lips off At War with the Mystics and flew down 2nd St. listening to Under My Thumb by Social Distortion off Mainliner and Fat Boys by Sport Doen off Never Mind Aerobics Here's Punk Rope.
We had to make a stop at Mailboxes Etc. I heard The Way You Move (Feat. Sleepy Brown) and, Knowing both by Big Boi off Speakerboxxx, followed by Spybreak! by Propellerheads off Decksandrumsandrockandroll.
As we skated and handed out fliers and laughed and posed for pictures, I kept my iPod going at a low but audible volume as I heard Comicstripteasegirl by Stereo Total off Juke-Box Alarm, So Whatcha Want (feat. B-Real) by the Beastie Boys off Dr. Numbers Presents Still Ill, Anti-Pop by Kommunity FK off The Vision and the Voice and Take Me Higher by Peshay.
It's always good to have Gratitude, especially when It's delivered by the Beastie Boys off Check Your Head. The tunes continued with Tequila Dub by Sly and Robbie off Maximum Dub, Pat-Trip Dispenser by The Fall, Everything's Gone Green by New Order, Normal (Is a Million Miles Away) by the Groovie Ghoulies off Springman Records Sampler and Blitzkrieg Bop by the Ramones.
As we came to the end of our journey, we headed to Archibalds for some ice cold lemonade. I heard History Repeating by Propellerheads off Decksanddurmsandrockandroll, Unspeakable by Killing Joke off What's This For, Mad Flava by Fatboy Slim off Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars, I Love You Big Dummy by Magazine and Oh This World by Dr. Alimantado off Kings Bread.
As we left Archibald's and skated home I heard Insane In the Brain by Cypress Hill, Make Love by Daft Punk off Human After All, and Only Child by Patrick Mata off Hydro Carbons from a Meteorite.
It was a hot day. 95 degrees by the time we got home. But the joy we shared for those few hours was well worth the time and energy. We connected with some really neat people and we plan to do it again next month. (See video)
If you want to have your own Laugh Tour, we'll gladly send you a PDF of our Laugh sign. As a bonus, we'll also send our Love and Peace signs from last month's tour. Simply fill in your name and e-mail below. We won't share your info with anyone. If you want to remain on our list, we'll also send you updates about roller derby, playlists, concerts, free workouts and more.
P.S. Today I spent some time at the final mile of the Long Beach Marathon. This playlist was also part of what carried me through a couple of miles of skating hard and cheering the runners. Stay tuned for pictures and highlights from my visit to the Long Beach Marthon. Sometimes Simplicity Can Be Sweet
Sunday, October 5th, 2008
As a result of many economic forces, including my past compulsion to purchase new clothes at a whim, I have had to seriously curtail my spending.
I'm living a frugal life right now.
This has forced me to find joy in simplicity. If I want to enjoy my life, I have to find wonder and awe in simple things like caterpillars, butterflies and any number of things that were overwhelmingly exciting in childhood. And on this day in particular, I succeeded in doing such.
Materials required: Dog, leash, iPod, great music, Fight Crew t-Shirt, Jordache Jeans, $5 gift certificate to Starbucks and a few bucks in my pocket.
Music sets the tone.
As I put in my earbuds, slam the front gate and hit play on my iPod, this is what I hear (all links go to iTunes or MySpace where you can preview/buy these songs): Bung by Midfield General off Sonic Velocity - Drum N' Bass & Electronic. Trust me, this gets me off to a great start on my trip to Starbucks which is really an excuse to get out of the house, walk the dog and hope that she gets tired enough that she will leave me alone in the afternoon.
The next set of songs took me from my front gate, up Redondo Ave., past 3rd street and all the way to Starbucks on 7th and Redondo.
Groove Holmes by The Beastie Boys off The IN Sound From Way Down, 19.5 by LTJ Bukem & Peshay off The Best in Drum and Bass, No Thang On Me by Snoop Dogg Feat. B off R&G (Rhythm & Gangsters), Partymadchen Gefoltert by Stereo Total off Do The Bambi, Bring It by Peshay off Fuzion, Pow by The Beastie Boys off The IN Sound From Way Out.
After I found a chair to tie the dog to, I head into Starbucks. Just then, Madness by Killing Joke off What's This For! came on. Even though I know some people will think I'm rude for ordering with my headphones on, I don't care. As I ordered, I asked myself, "Am I talking too loud or not loud enough?" Then I thought to myself, "What do I care if the barista likes me or not?"
I go outside and sit on the cushy outdoor furniture in the breezeway. I crank up my iPod, and eat my sandwich. Here's what played in my ears as I chewed.
Sajanna by Badmarsh & Shri off Signs and Holiday in Cambodia by Dead Kennedys off Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death.
Right about now, I'm feeling strong, I feel like I'm reconnecting with my youth. I've had a breakthrough moment. For the first time in 20+ years I swear to God I heard the lyrics more clearly than ever. Jello Biafra utters the words "Right Guard will not help you here" right after he says, "It's time to taste, what you most fear". I never realized that is what he said. Fascinating.
I'm feeling Gal VanIZed big time now. I am grooving to tunes like All Rights Reversed (featuring Klaxons) by Chemical Brothers off We Are the Night and We Shall Overcome by Mahalia Jackson.
I'm refelecting and thinking: Oh Yeah, as I hear the empowering words of Shining Star by Earth, Wind and Fire and sit on the Starbucks patio furniture, chillin' with the dog.
More cool songs commence: Oh Yeah by Stereo Total off of Juke-Box-Alarm, followed by Since I've Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin. Meanwhile, I'm sippin' a sour/sweet fruit smoothy from Starbucks. It's a berry/grapefruit italian iced blend and it tastes good. In fact, after my first sip I had a serious brain freeze. I would recommend that you sip slowly to avoid that experience.
After leisurely chewing the last bite of my Turkey Avocado sandwich, I get the dog and start walking as I hear these tunes: Distortion by Monkey Fist off Between the Lines and Finger Lickin' Good by Beastie Boys.
I finished off the walk and came in the front door listening to The Gentle Rain (RJD2 Remix) by Astrud Gilberto off Verve Remixed 3.
This great little getaway cost me about $3.65 and it was well worth every penny. I guess if you count the cost of songs at 99 cents a download, it's really $20.48 but the great thing about my music is that I can play it over and over again, anywhere I want for the rest of my life. To me, music is important and valuable so the investment is miniscual compared to the price of discontent and boredom. Punk Rock Playlist Suitable for an Afternoon Bike Ride in Long Beach
Thursday, August 28th, 2008
Another day of gorgeous weather in Long Beach California. A bike ride is a way to get some exercise. With good music on the iPod, it feels like going outside to play.
Here's my playlist for this ride. All links go to iTunes or MySpace as noted.
Intelligent Guy by the Butthole Surfers (didn't see it on iTunes but you can check out their MySpace page)
Intro by Big Boi off Speakerboxxx
City of Fun by Come off Volume 08
Rap is Really Changing by Mucho Macho off The Limehouse Link
Harmony in My Head by the Buzzcocks off Singles Going Steady
Purity by Monkey Fist off Between The Lines. I have chatted back and forth across the Pond with these fellows on MySpace for a couple of years. I love their song Take It (you can hear it on the Monkey Fist MySpace profile). They keep telling me they've got something new coming out but I haven't heard it yet. They are not on iTunes. Imagine, probably thousands, perhaps millions of bands are not.
She's a Woman by the Beatles off Past Masters - Volume 1 (couldn't find it on iTunes)
Breakaway by Basement Jaxx of Rooty (I love this entire CD)
She's Lost Control by Joy Division off Substance 1977-1980
Kneel Before Your God by Lemon Jelly off of the Swordfish soundtrack
Belfast/Wasted (Wasted Vocal Mix) by Orbital off of Volume 3

Sometimes it's hard to get motivated for your workout. Especially if you feel bad about your body or you're in boring surroundings. I have a cure for you: The Warrior Woman Workout Playlist.
I'm warning you, this music is extremely high-energy and you will probably notice a difference in your body right away as you listen. Rather than drag your body unwillingly and lethargically through your 30 minute workout, why not glide like a gazelle or command your space like a warrior (or warrior princess).
This playlist will help set the tone for just that type of workout. I was on the treadmill at 3.0-5.0 miles for about 42 minutes with these tunes and I had a rockin' good time. The majority of the time I was jogging, I only used the fast walk for warm up and cool down. All links go to iTunes.
