Playlist for Gal VanIZed Skating

Gal VanIZed at Fresh Meat practiceWhen something is galvanized, it is reinforced and powerful. The following songs made it easy for me to get in the zone. Easy to crouch down low and thrust my legs out to each side of me while my arms pumped back and forth in the opposite direction. I wound down from my skating workout listening to Get a Shot of the Refrigerator by Stereolab off of Fab Four Suture. My cool down consisted of the "drunken sailor" drill all the way down First Street and up Orizaba to Broadway. Drunken sailor is when you cross one leg over the other and try to keep moving forward without falling down. Prior to cool down I skated and danced my little heart out on the Long Beach Boardwalk listening to the following tunes: (all links go to iTunes) itunes logoBanquet by Bloc Party off of Promo Only Canada Modern Rock Radio Tuning In by Groove Armada off of Love Box [UK] Home of the Brave by Naked Raygun off of All Rise Halfway Home (feat. Rinkrat’s Song of the Week – 7-15-08 – Buffalo Stance by Neneh Cherry

Nenah Cherry - Bufflao StanceNeneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance is a dance tune with a great beat. It mixes new wave and hip hop musical elements with powerful words and effective delivery. Watching the video will really enhance your overall experience. Here are some sample lyrics to contemplate: "No money man can win my love, it's sweetness that I'm thinking of" and "looking good is a state of mind". Rinkrat points out a couple of nuances of the song: the distinct New Order influence and the singer's choice to emphasize the term "Knowotimean"? He said that by using that term she earned street credibility because it was common slang in England at the time this song was recorded. I can't help but notice the Buffalo Girls sample that repeats itself continuously throughout the song. The producer of this track utilized an broad cross-section of some of the coolest elements of 80's "new wave" music. Specific origins and timelines elude me but clearly Michael Jackson, Boy George, and Salt N' Peppa come to mind when I hear this tune. Because I cannot identify all the pieces of this song, I'm drawn to listen to it over and over again until I figure it all out. In my opinion, the choice to intergrate samples from numerous genres weaves a story of unity that is missing in much of the popular music today. Another interesting tidbit: Neneh Cherry's grandfather is Don Cherry (AKA Donald Eugene Cherry), a jazz musician born in 1938 and raised in Los Angeles. Cherry died from hepatitis. Click play, turn up the speakers and enjoy. I recommend that you listen to this song a minumum of 3 times so you can catch some of the subtleties that make this a great tune. One of the things I love about Hip Hop is how it weaves several layers of one story into a 3-5 minute song. True Hip Hop artists take you on a journey and that's what this song does if you pay very close attention and understand the connections. Rinkrat’s Song of the Week – July 1, 2008

A Slice of English ToastThere has been a change of guards in the music department at Get Gal VanIZed. The weekly song is now sent by Michael Zampelli/AKA Rinkrat, former owner of Zed Records. Zed was a Long Beach, CA mecca of punk and alternative music that kept Southern California music enthusiasts adequately supplied with unique, original and innovative music for more than 30 years. I want music with a theme. It has to be empowering, positive and pro-woman to be on Get Gal VanIZed. Rinkrat delivers all that and more. He makes a smooth transition from the Hip Hop selections of the past four weeks into a reggae/ska sound that reminds me of Jamaica and Island Records and Goldenvoice shows at the Olympic Auditorium in the 80's. Rinkrat's debut track selection is titled A Liberated Woman. It's by Ranking Ann off the Slice of English Toast LP. Click play, turn up your speakers and give it a good listen. Roller Derby: ‘Hot chicks kicking ass on wheels’

I spent the weekend at a Roller Derby tournament in Los Angeles. I was surrounded by hot chicks who kick ass. How can that NOT have a positive influence on you? I didn't come up with the phrase 'It's hot chicks kicking ass on wheels'. That's the title of an article that appeared on L.A. Com earlier this week. But it's a great title and it pretty much describes how I feel about Rinkrat's LAist.com photo gallery from this weekend's roller derby tournament. I'm gonna post a few teasers here, but if you love derby like I love derby, you'll probably go to the gallery and look at each photo about 27 times each. (Click on photos to see a larger version). Kung Pow, LA Derby Doll is practically airborne Kung Pow Tina finally squeezes her way through the powerful blocking force of Team Awesome. The question is, will she fall or will she recover? Tara. Tough and nails, smooth as silk. Tara Armov of the L.A. Riettes Ellen Page cheers for Axles of Evil from the LA Derby Dolls I'm not a very observant star gazer but I can appreciate the publicity power of a well-known name, so I will go out of my way to blatantly use the name Ellen Page of Juno in my blog post and keywords. And it IS a pretty sweet picture of Ellen Page cheering for Axles of Evil don'tcha think? Why is she there you ask? Because if you haven't heard yet, she's starring in Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It along with Juliette Lewis (see below), Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig and Zoe Bell. This movie takes an up-close and personal look into the life of a derby girl and roller derby culture. When the Derby Dolls door staff saw Stephanie walk towards us in her Hot Dog on a Stick uniform, we burst into spontaneous applause. There really is nothing like a Hot Dog on a Stick at the Roller Derby Tournament. Don't forget the fresh squeezed lemonade. Juliette Lewis celebrates with Derby Dolls at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles, CA Hey look, it's Juliette Lewis (Natural Born Killers, Strange Days, Cape Fear) gettin' cozy with Derby Doll's: Suzy Snakeyes, V. Lee and Trixie Biscuit. Pretty in Stereo was a half-time band during the 2008 Battle on the Bank roller derby tournament. These were some rockin' young women AND for the first time ever at a live music event, the band members threw panties at the audience, not the other way around. So, I am literally wearing a pair of hot pink panties with a Pretty in Stereo logo on them as I blog. My hubby caught them for me :) Hey, wait a second I almost forgot, Burt Burcharah was there too! My hubby shot a photo of him with Derby Dolls co-founder, Demolicious (aka Rebecca Nimby).

Riding my Pink Beach Cruiser in Long Beach, Listenin’ to my iPod

Long Beach bike path ride listening to iPodToday, when I was on my way out for a bike ride, my husband (rinkrat) seized the opportunity to test his new camera equipment. I didn't mind modeling at all because I've been wanting to document how cool bike riding can be and I love to share my iPod playlists with you. I listened to some good tunes on my ride and I'll list them all below. Long Beach bike pathThere were a lot of people on the bike path today. I cruised through a group of 30-40 year old hipsters with tattoos. I tried to capture it on my cell phone camera but there really is nothing like being there, rocking out to some seriously cool music, feeling the wind on your face and the vibration of the bike wheels, the bike seat and the rhythm of the wheels spinning in circles. If you use your imagination, it's kinda like slamming in the pit or doing roller derby. I mean, it can be, if you want it to be. Give it a try, get on your bike, listen to your favorite tunes and put a smile on your face. That's the difference between working out on machines like a rat in a cage and being a free spirit with a free body. Exercise is invigorating and empowering and it takes little or no equipment to get the benefits of increasing your heart rate and building your muscles. Playlist for this Sunday Afternoon bike ride: Its pretty hard to sit still when you listen to stuff like this (links go to iTunes): Price of Gas by Bloc Party off Silent Alarm (Isn't the price of gas on everyone's mind?) Helicopter (Sheriff Whitey Mix) by Bloc Party off So Here We Are Dis Mx Collapsed Lung off Volume II Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep Pettibone remix) by New Order You Send Me by Sam Cooke off The Man Who Invented Soul - Disc 1 Everything's Gone Green by New Order The Great Prentender by Brian Eno off Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy. Soul Sauce (Fila Brazilla Remix) by Cal Tjader off Verve Remixed 2 Track 13 by A Tribe Called Quest - Sometimes, my husband gets me this music and it doesn't have names on it but I LOVE A Tribe Called Quest and I will listen to any version of any song anytime Ended the ride with Slag by Fx off Killed by Death #100 (couldn't find it on iTunes). Grooving to music on the ipodThis photo captures the feeling I enjoy when I listen to good music and stay in the zone. When I feel like this, life is fun, easy and inspired and I am Gal VanIZed.
