Big Youth at Ragga Muffins Festival, Long Beach 2010

On Saturday, I attended the Ragga Muffins Festival in Long Beach. Michael Zampelli took some photos for The District Weekly and I snagged a few for this blog.

My favorite musical act of the day was Big Youth (pictured above). This man exudes more verve and childlike enthusiasm than most people a fraction of his age. He’s got a groovin’ rap style and smooth moves to go with it. Go to Big Youth’s MySpace page if you want to get in the groove.

I also felt childlike and care-free wearing my Gal Vanized get-up and eating funnel cake. I decided that I was going to surrender myself to the IRIE vibes and absorb as much of the experience as possible.

The crowd was very diverse and fun. Everyone was relaxed and having a good time. It was like sitting in a big huge living room. No problems whatsoever. I wasn’t the only one there with pink hair, click on the photo below to see a larger version of the audience.

Galvanize Your Mind Now – Pilot on You Tube

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

First there was a Flip Video camera, given to someone like me who loves gadgets, has an idea a minute and some time off for the holidays. Second there is the resulting video. In less than two minutes I will list seven things that Galvanize My Mind. (Maybe they’ll galvanize your mind too):

1. Strolling the streets of Bluff Park with my iPod
2. Going to the farmer’s market
3. Snuggling with my cat
4. Working out on the bluff with Your Next Victory
5. Visualizing my ideal 2010 and beyond
6. Reading good Tweets
7. Watching Hello Ross on YouTube

This and more captured in my “not quite 2 minute” video. If you can’t see the video here, watch it on You Tube.

You’ll see me doing push-ups at the beach with a pink wig on and you’ll meet Fenix, my persian tabby cat. One of my favorite clips is “Boys on Bikes.” I was out strolling the sidewalks of Bluff Park in Long Beach with my Flip Video in hand and a group of about 10 young men on skateboards and bicycles rode by, it was pretty exciting. Some of us screamed in joy. Including me. It’s on video.

itunes_iconI practiced with using audio clips in the video. I sampled Galvanize by the Chemical Brothers, and Express Yourself By The Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band. Songs like these and more can be found on the latest “Songs to Galvanize Your Mind” PDF. Free to all new blog subscribers today. Get it here.

At the end of this video I mention a Create the Life You Want free hypnosis MP3 download. You can get it at icreathabits.com

Sunday Afternoon at Farmer’s Market in Long Beach

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

This afternoon I strolled the long aisle of produce and food vendors that comprises Long Beach Farmer’s Market. I had my new Christmas present, the Flip Ultra HD Video camera, in tow. This is my first Flip production and I’m looking forward to more.

See the HD version of the video on YouTube, it gives you a sense of the quality of the Flip Video.

I’ve been wanting to shop at the Farmer’s Market more often but sometimes I forget. I’m grateful to the folks at everythinglongbeach.com who recently listed all the Long Beach Farmer’s Markets. I’m going to re-post the link here for any Long Beach residents who are interested. I find the Farmer’s Market not only health-conscious, but an enjoyable experience as I hope I’ve captured in this video.

By the way, the band in this video is TED Bluegrass Band. They play every Thursday night from 7-9 p.m. at Cafe Ambrosia, 1923 E. Broadway, Long Beach CA 90802. You can hear more of their music on MySpace.

‘Funkin’ Long Beach Sundown Walk’ Playlist

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I just walked in the door after an hour long walk on the beach. It was sundown and Long Beachians were buzzing around on the boardwalk staying active and fit. They were on skates, they were on bikes, they were on foot. Some were in pairs, girlfriends keeping each other up to date on the latest, a father and his son riding bikes.

Some were alone, just them and their iPod. I was in the latter category of people, rocking out to my favorite tunes and taking in the scenery as if I was watching a movie.

My ‘bring it on home’ song was Dazz by Brick (video here), one of my favorite funk songs, a song I did not hear at the Long Beach Funk Fest this weekend.itunes_icon

Here are the other songs that laid the soundtrack for a spectacular, energizing walk in Long Beach. (All links go to iTunes, enjoy).

Long Beach Roller Derby Video from The District Weekly

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Long Beach Roller Derby from District Weekly on Vimeo.

About a month ago I posted about a fun skate out I went on with a group from Moxi Roller Skate Shop. It was titled “I Took the Hill, It Didn’t Take Me – Conquering Fear on Roller Skates“.

I tried to describe the hill we went down and the speed we picked up but I didn’t have an adequate video or photo to accompany the story. Well, the video has now been posted at the District Weekly. It includes documentation of skating down the Cherry Beach hill as well as information about the up-and-coming Long Beach Roller Derby league. Check it out.

Press-Telegram Mentions Long Beach Roller Derby

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

A recent Press-Telegram article titled Long Beach wheeler-dealer features Michelle Steilin (aka Estro Jen), owner of Moxi Skate Shop. Toward the end of the article, there’s mention of the upcoming Long Beach Roller Derby League.

Steilin … is helping form two Long Beach amateur teams – The Dive Bar Brawlers and the Terminal Island Tootsies – to begin competing in a new Long Beach league. They’ve secured space temporarily at the Spruce Goose for competitions, but are looking for a permanent home.

I Took the Hill, It Didn’t Take Me – Conquering Fear on Roller Skates

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

The view from Junipero and Ocean. This road leads to the parking lot and is what we skated down on Friday night

The view from Junipero and Ocean. This road leads to the parking lot and is what we skated down on Friday night

Friday night I went roller skating with a group of people in Long Beach. It’s all part of a monthly roll-out lead by Estro Jen, owner of Moxi Skates and founder of the upcoming Long Beach Roller Derby league.

The evening began with congregating at the Moxi Skate shop for a short briefing on the route we would take. One of our first challenges would be to skate down the fairly steep hill at Junipero and Ocean Blvd that leads down to the bike path.

I skated the hill once before and I knew from experience that taking this hill means leaving fear behind. Once you get near the bottom you build up some serious momentum and any attempts at stopping will probably make it more likely for you to tumble and fall than if you just stay low and go for it. So, stay low and go for it I did. See video here.

What waited at the bottom of the hill was a car with it’s lights on, ready to drive up the hill and a sand-covered asphalt parking lot. I wasn’t prepared for either of these things but I realized I had no choice but to roll with what was and hope for the best. I curved to the right, zooming past the car and taking a slightly bumpy, skiddy ride on the sandy asphalt. I stayed low and steady and slowed to a gentle roll without incident.

Once I realized I had made it down the hill safely, I was exhilirated. My heart was racing in a “hell yeah!” kind of way. The entire experience reinforced the lesson I can never get enough of which is, the mind doesn’t always tell the truth and listening to thoughts of limitation is crippling.

On my way down the hill there were those familiar thoughts, “I’m too old” and “what if I eat it in front of everyone?” I dismissed each of them quickly.

The truth is, age had absolutely nothing to do with skating down the hill. It’s not like I needed the endurance of a 20 year old, all I was doing was letting gravity take over. I was there with a pack of 10 or so people. Some men, some women, all of various heights and weights. If they could do it, there is absolutely no reason I why I couldn’t do it also.

If, by chance I did wipe out in front of everyone, who cares? I didn’t have time to entertain the thought of eating the pavement because giving that thought power would only increase my chances of crashing. If I had a choice between making it down the hill without a scratch or wiping out, I’d choose the scratch-less version. That’s what I gave my attention to.

For me, all this is simply an analogy for how I want to live my life. Whether it’s skating down a hill, delivering a public speech or teaching a class I want to be fully present and fearless. That’s the way to truly live life versus being a spectator of it. In my opinion life is too short and precious for me to live in a mental prision of limitation and fear.

Tea Time with Tina Tessina

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

tinastpartwtpot

Tina Tessina celebrated her birthday with a group of her friends this Sunday at the Vintage Tea Leaf in Long Beach. I am honored to be chosen as one of the 8 women in attendance.

The Vintage Tea Leaf is quite an experience. It’s located on the busy Broadway Ave. in Long Beach, yet the moment the door closes behind you, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a playroom of elegance.

Feathers, flowers and butterflies were everywhere. The room was rich with aroma. All those feminine extras that were so special to some of us when we were growing up must have been special to Beverly Terfloth, The Tea Mistress. It is impossible to set your eyes on any spot in the room and not get that special feeling of being at grandma’s house.

One of the first things you do after you walk in the door is to choose from one of many hats in the hat hallway.

I tried mine on in the bathroom, here’s a picture from the bathroom sink. There is a zen sand garden on the counter and a va va voom art piece on the wall:

Rivers Cuomo Picture in Rolling Stone Magazine

Friday, January 9th, 2009

cuomorollingstone Since I was in the room when this photo was taken and I’m closely related to the photographer, I can’t help but get excited that its in Rolling Stone Magazine.

Rivers Cuomo (Weezer front man) did a special hootenanny at Fingerprints Records in Long Beach back in November. It was the day Alone II – Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo was released in stores. By some last minute change of plans, me and my husband Michael went to the event as journalists on behalf of the LAist.com. Michael Zampelli shot photos and I captured the evenings events in writing.

Cuomo Rivers at Fingerprints in Long BeachThere were some cool little milestones along the way such as getting on the week around the ists list, having the photo published on The Rolling Stone and District Weekly’s websites and seeing that the event itself was front page local news in the Press Telegram. Plus, I was in a photo that was published on PressTelegram.com (I’m in the red sweater, standing beside Rivers Cuomo).

Today’s milestone is the biggest and best of all so far; a photo published in Rolling Stone magazine. I’ve been looking at music magazines most of my life. Cool photos of my favorite musicians was probably one of things I most looked forward to seeing. It’s fun to be a part of the story in the making. Major props to Michael Zampelli AKA Rinkrat for this noteable accomplishment.
