Galvanized Facebook Friday 03-18-11 – Listening to the Beat of My Drum

I have to say, I believe the Tsunami in Japan shook me to the core to the point I'm having my own personal Tsunami. That, and my husband had a serious medical scare, my teaching schedule doubled this week, and I'm enrolled in a 40-hour domestic violence class which is also rocking me to the core. My heart goes out to all the families in Japan. I cannot even begin to imagine the enormity of life change that has been thrusted upon them in such a short period of time. As tragic as things must be for them, I find solace when I ponder this thought: this experience is going to bond people together in a way nothing else will. That's what tragedy and trauma do. They make us realize we need each other. Although I appreciated my husband before he had this recent medical scare, I am now overjoyed by his progress and the prospect of being together to experience some fun, new and exciting things in life. Actually, we've already started. We went drum shopping at Guitar City and came home with two Djembe's. What a great stress-reliever this has been. I stroll around the house beating out my frustrations and connecting with my rhythm. Sometimes we create a rhythm together. It is so therapuetic. For me these days it's all about living fully present and honest in the moment. This week, when my husband's blood pressure was at emergency levels, I didn't try to pretend that I was strong or unaffected by the ordeal. That's what I used to do. I used to be afraid of my emotions so I put up a wall. Walls suck. Especially in marriage. So when my husband and I got home, I sobbed and I kept sobbing until I was done. It was a great experience to demonstrate my emotion and to share emotion with the love of my life. Yet my programming and my habits would have me harden up and avoid people at a time like this. It's difficult to act in a new way, to reach out to others and tell the truth, but it's worth the effort. In my work with people I hear so many stories of people who regret that they didn't say "I love you" before one of their family members died. They think they have to "stay strong" and they don't get a chance to share emotion with their family. I think that's sad and I don't want to have a sad life, not anymore. So I am going to live fully. I am going to follow Thea Westra's lead and get my boots on and live a galvanized life, Nancy Sinatra style. And on that note, I leave you with this music video.

I Want Roller Derby on My OWN T.V. Show

I submitted an audition to Oprah on Sunday. I'm asking you to vote for me to get my OWN T.V. talk show. In my audition, I tell Oprah I want to talk to roller derby girls. And I mean it. It's a fast growing sport that empowers women and it is fun to watch. In the 70's, everyone watched it and loved it. Let's get it back on T.V. I want a show thats a mix between Soul Train and old school Oprah. You know, when she used to have real-life, everyday people on and they'd tell amazing stories and experience transformation before your eyes. How about if we do transformative shows and mix it up with fun stuff like music and roller derby? That's what I want to do and you can help me by voting today. Vote early, vote often. Your opportunity to vote ends June 3.

Choosing Love Even When He Doesn’t

Lately I've had a few separate conversations with women about the man in their lives. In one way or another, each woman said something to the effect of, "why is it always me that has to change first? Why doesn't he ever have to do anything?" I know the answer to both of those questions based on lots of experience and trial and error and I've asked these same questions to my female companions along the way. The easiest answer I can give is this: If you want to be happy and you're not, it's up to you to do something to change it. If that sounds harsh, try this: take all the emotional history out of the equation. Read each of the following words very slowly and let it sink in. Avoid the tendency to get defensive. If-YOU-want-to-be-happy-and-you're-not-it's-up-to-YOU-to-do-something-to-change-it. This is simply a routine statement like, if you want a tuna sandwich, you'll have to do something to get it. If you want to go to the movies, you'll have to take steps to make it happen. For some reason in relationships we want the other person to change first. If you have two stubborn, inmature people both refusing to change first, your relationship will be in a stinky stalemate for way too long (trust me, I know). Here are a few different ways to look at it. 1. Going first is cool. Being the leader can kick ass sometimes. 2. Maybe he is the one choosing love and you should follow his lead. 3. If the stuff about the law of attraction is true and Joy and Love are attracters but hate and anger are repellents, why on earth would you want to stay in hate and anger when all it does is keep you from what you want and you and only you can change it? It took a really long time for me to get this. I guess I'll have to raise my hand for the category of stubborn and immature. After watching the Presidential Inauguration and the We Are One concert, after hearing powerful speeches and inspiring songs about "doing your part" I figure the least I can do is love the ones I'm with. Seems pretty minute in comparison to running the country in turbulent times. Happy Child Apple iTunes

Rave Reviews from The Ray Part IV

Let's put this in perspective, I am on my forth (and final) blog about one magazine and I'm only on page 17 of 23. The magazine is The Ray and you can subscribe on-line at www.theray.org. In Vaishali's article, How Spiritually Healthy Are You? I found two quotes that were a little lengthy but too powerful to keep to myself: "You can take all the vitamins you want, eat healthy, fresh foods, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water, sleep eight hours nightly, but if you go through your day criticising yourself and others, finding fault and blame in yourself and others, intimidating, disrepecting or bullying yourself or others gossiping from a mean spirited heart, or witholding help and compassion from yourself and others, then you are deeply Spiritually unhealthy. Disenfranchising God consciousness is a Spiritual illness, and the primary symptom of this malady is unhappiness." The other quote was, "Take a step back and objectively look at your life. How often are you recreating your old issues? You know the old, outdated sources of suffering you love so much to indulge in: worrying, telling yourself you will never be happy or truly loved, building a monument with your awareness to how there is never going to be enough time, love, money or opportunity. Ask yourself how often are you recreateing these perceptions? How often do you reach for the worry drug of choice and justify the addiction?" I think the two above quotes are eloquently stated and need no elaboration. Making Sense of Men by Alison ArmstrongTurn the page and you'll find the article Making Sense of Men. Vivian L. Geffen interviews Alison Armstrong, creator of PAX Programs and author of Making Sense of Men - A Woman's Guide to a Lifetime of Love, Care and Attention from All Men. Visit www.understandingmen.com for more. Here are a few quotes from Alison Armstrong: "If a woman asks herself "What would I do if he were my friend?" she'll get the most honest, straightforward, authentic partnership oriented answer to the question." When Vivian Geffen asked if "women project their insecurities onto men's behaviors," Armstrong responds, "(Women) project everything. We project our motivations on to them as if they are their motivations. Rarely do men do things for the same reasons as women." "Women don't know that men absolutely love women. As a starting point, they LOVE us. They think we're beautiful and fascinating and magical and possess mysterious abilities that are beyond their understanding. They need women. They need women's attention and our care...They know they need us and they don't try to resist it. They are empowered by our happiness." BasilThe final article is about The Benefits of Basil. I already love Basil. I don't have to be convinced to eat it. In fact, just this week I ate an awesome beef/basil Thai dish at May's Thai Kitchen in Long Beach. About 16 people from the Your Next Victory team were in attendance. May treated us all like kings and queens. If you have a chance, you should stop by for a meal. Tell May Sheri sent you ;)
