The Gift of Gabriella

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011
Last week, Valerie from Upstate New York commented on my blog about the Playlist that got me through the Honolulu Marathon. She shared some of her favorite workout tunes like Wish Liszt (Toy Shop Madness) Piano Tribute Players, Love Drunk Piano Tribute to Boys Like Girls and Diablo Rojo by Rodrigo y Gabriella. I decided to explore a few of her selections just to see what I'd find. What I found was a musical act called Rodrigo Y Gabriella and I found their performance mesmerizing. Being the rock and roll girl that I am, when faced with a choice of which of their videos I wanted to watch I headed for a cover of Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven followed by a cover of Metallica's Orion, which was worth sharing so here you go: (click here to watch on YouTube.) Speaking of rock and roll girls, Gabriella definitely knows how to rock the guitar which she alternately uses as a percussion instrument. Gabriella immerses herself in her art and is an inspiration to watch. By the time I got to the end of the video, I was roused, galvanized and a tiny bit teary-eyed. Check it out, it's worth 2:46 of your time.

Get Galvanized with the Chemical Brothers

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
One of the tracks that keeps me galvanized is Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers The tune is very cool, I like the beat and it features Q-tip who is one of my favorites (I'm a big A Tribe Called Quest fan). The lyrics are also very motivating. It's basically about pursuing your passion/dream and letting go of fear of what others will think. I would have to say this song is almost like an anthem for my life right now. I actually hear myself saying "push the button" when I'm ready to take a big risk such as a scary phone call I have to make or sending my 'stuff' out to the world. It gives me the extra 'umph' to do things I would rather put off until 'tomorrow.' Here's a video for you to watch. If you can't see it below, click here and see it on YouTube.

Galvanized Facebook Friday 12-31-10 – Scott Walker and Scouring the Digital Underground

Friday, December 31st, 2010
When I'm at my computer surfing the web, I feel like I'm Captain James T. Kirk at the control panels of the Starship Enterprise.  I speed past information at warp speed but some of it is worth looking at more than once.  When that happens, I generally swipe the link, or click on "like" so I can at least be reminded of the information and go back to it later if possible. Tomorrow is the first day of 2011 and I've been working in the background diligently for a re-launch and restructuring of my blog.  One of the things I want to do is savor and share the top highlights from my Facebook wall so I can remember them for longer than 10 seconds.  I'm so excited about this new feature that I decided to start today, even though it's not officially 2011 yet. Happy New Year and if you're ready to galvanize your life, I invite you to join me. Subscribe or comment on this blog to get involved. Here's the line up I have to keep you galvanized in 2011: M – Master Mind Monday T – Musical Tuesday W – Galvanize Your Mind Wednesday Th – Galvanize Your Body Thursday F – Fun and Fabulous Friday Now, going back to Facebook Friday. One of the highlights of my week was watching Scott Walker: 30 Century Man. I didn't even know who he was until I saw the movie on Netflix. This is one deep movie about a serious artist. After checking out the movie, I decided to go to iTunes and browse the Scott Walker selection. I haven't purchased anything yet but I think I will be adding Scott Walker to my collection very soon. Let me know if you have any Scott Walker recommendations. On Sunday I "attended" AgapeLive, did you know they have streaming services? Pretty cool. Here's a link. While I was preparing for the Galvanized Music Countdown it was like a long walk down memory lane and I loved hearing some of the old songs. I moved some of my content from past blogs to this location. I came across photos from the Marilyn Monroe Exhibit on the Queen Mary and my trip to Phyllis Diller's mansion. Good memories. I'm looking forward to 52 Fun and Fabulous Friday's in 2011 and FYI, I will be posting events on Friday's and I'm especially interested in promoting roller derby and music so send me your stuff if you want to be listed. Happy New Year.

What Are Your Influences?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010
Every musical act has influences. The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest influenced each other. Punk bands from the U.K. influenced garage bands in Southern California and vice versa. Reggae and dub influenced each other. What are your influences? That's what we talked about in Helping and Listening Skills this week. We came up with a great list and I liked it so much I took a picture of it. I asked the students to tell me about the things that influence them. What do they value? Why do they do what they do; love what they love? This is the list they came up with: Parents Environment -Friends -Neighborhood -Peers -Religion Culture Schools Food/Nutrition Media Mental Illness Life Experience -Observation Socio-Economic Status ($$$) Books Music Relationships Friendships Family -Uncles -Aunts -Brothers -Sisters -etc. Role Model -Coach -Minister -Teacher Law Government Health Medication/Drugs Language Sleep Fashion Freedom Travel Pets Sex Arts -Pictures -Painting -Dance Entertainment Perception The point I want to make in this class is that you cannot know any of these things about yourself or anyone else unless you first learn how to listen. A great Master Mind group is one that's committed to honoring and respecting each other and that includes listening unconditionally and without judgment. It is honoring a person to trust that they know what's best for their own life. --------------- Start a Master Mind Group.comWhen you think about it, every musical act you know of is using the Master Mind principle whether they realize it or not. They are joining together as a team with a combined vision. You can use the same principle and make some truly rockin' things happen in your life. Do you have a creative project you want to complete? Do you want to find a purpose for your life? If so, I invite you to come over to my brand new page called Start a Master Mind Group.com. I'm offering 4 freebies to get you started so you can get a sense of what the Master Mind is all about. There's nothing cool about holding back.

Hip Hop Lovers Cry “Get Rel!g!on”

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010
"Get Rel!g!on" is the current rally cry surrounding the latest hip hop producer, who's already began dazzling artists and record labels with his skilled creations and innovative beats. Utilizing a fascinating mix of live playing and assorted sampling, the young producer from Vancouver, British Columbia is generating buzz in Canada as well as the U.S. Rel!g!on is already releasing his own material, as well as working with other artists to build his reputation as a bona fide hit machine in the hip hop game. Released in January 2010, his first official release, Revelationz I garnered positive attention from reviewers and fans across the web. Featuring heavy hitters such as Chuck D of Public Enemy as well as Planet Asia and Moka Only, Rel!g!on's first record was nothing short of an instant hip hop success. His inspired, imaginative tracks laid the foundation for ultra skilled MCs to spit their finest rhymes and create memorable, catchy songs. "Rel!g!on has a nice sound to his production, and it shouldn't be too much longer before his congregation of followers grows," said Emmanuel Wallace of RapReviews.com on Revelationz I. Born in Ottawa, Rel!g!on grew up listening to his father's musical influence, which included a variety of instruments, singing, and an extensive record collection. Fascinated by keyboards and organs, the fledgling hip hop perfectionist began experimenting with records and a Casio SK 1, beginning the journey of honing his incredible skills. While he started with an old keyboard and entertaining diss tracks about his high school classmates, Rel!g!on rapidly progressed into a respected producer working with artists from Vancouver to New York. The future is bright for Rel!g!on, as he shows absolutely no signs of slowing down, with a number of impressive projects currently in the works for hip hop fans across North America. He produced two tracks on Planet Asia's upcoming record Black Belt Theatre, which also features Raekwon of Wu-Tang, DJ Babu and Evidence of Dilated Peoples, Ras Kass and many more. Rel!g!on will also be at the helm for Planet Asia's entire next full length, slated for 2011. This summer will also see the anticipated release of a collaboration record between Rel!g!on and one of Pittsburgh's finest MCs, Jasiri X and New Orleans rapper/producer Dain. Check out his MySpace page for music videos and streaming audio, and Facebook for the latest information and updates. Download "Soldier" feat. Ny Oil & Chuck D Download "Pyramids" feat. Musical Road Trip to the California Poppy Reserve

Friday, May 7th, 2010
(If you don't see the video above, click here to go to YouTube) On Tuesday morning my husband came into the bedroom, where I was comfortably sleeping and proclaimed "road trip". We got in the car and drove to a destination that was a surprise to me. We ended up at the California Poppy Reserve in Antelope Valley. Along the way, we listened to music non-stop and documented the day with photos and video. In a sense, this is a mix-tape of our trip. All the car shots have music in the background. ------------------------------------------- See Michael Zampelli's photo gallery on Flickr. ------------------------------------------- We listened to Q-tip, Gary Numan, drum and bass and The Fall. We traveled from the 710 in Long Beach to the 5 freeway at Castaic Lake. Then, we took mountain roads all the way to the poppy fields. I hope this video inspires you to get out on the road or out in nature. I think we all truly need this type of rejuvenation for our sanity. California is a great place to live.
