Song of the Week – 1-20-09 – Till The End of the Day by The Kinks

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

For many American’s, today was a day of celebration as our new president was ushered into office. This song is a great reminder to keep the celebration going, from the morning til the end of the day.

“Till the End of the Day” was written by Ray Davies and released as a single in 1965 (Wikipedia).

Lyrics for Sunny Day by Akon

Who’d ever thought that I would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…
and now I look forward to every day….(welcome to my sunny day)…

Block don’t stop always stayed hot…
No matter how the seasons got..
I still remember when they took me away….
Kept it on lock then I got caught then I realized that I had to stop…
Then I took the time to explore a better way…

Searched high and low, so close, yet so far to go…
I just know, there’s a sunny day

Who’d ever thought that I would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…
And now I look forward to every day….

Welcome to my sunny day…
my sunny day…
everyday….
a better day…
Welcome to my sunny day…
my sunny day….
every day…
a better day…
welcome to my sunny day…

akon_happy_dayBeen a long day…
On my way to my holy place to pray…
Give thanks for every blessing given to me…
I know there’s more to see…more to me…no more living in misery…
Cos this is how I visioned life to be…..

Searched high and low, so close, yet so far to go…
I just know, there’s a sunny day

Who’d ever thought that i would see this day….
Where I would see my ghetto life fade away…
Cos I was lost and couldn’t find a way…

Six Ways Exercise Helps You Beat the Recession

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Sheri Zampelli hooping on the Roy Anthony showIs your budget giving you the blues? Exercise is a proven depression-buster among other things. In fact, exercising at home with your own equipment can help you get some serious bang for your buck.

Here are the benefits of working out at home, listening to your own cool music versus paying a membership fee at a gym you never go to anyway:

1. Save on heating costs – You’ll get so hot from exercise that you’ll be tempted to turn on the air conditioner, but never the heater

2. Entertain yourself – What a great way to pass the time; listening to music and moving your body

3. Reap all the benefits of exercise – You know, all that good stuff like your heart, your lungs, your blood, your skin, they all love it

4. Manage you moods - on-going, vigorous exercise will keep depression and anxiety at bay

5. Set your own stage – At home, you have complete control of the music selection and 100% freedom to lip-synch and play air guitar. At Bally’s Fitness, you’d probably hesitate before screaming out “You gotta fight for your right to party”. At home, you are free to blurt these things out with wreckless abandon Xena Warrior Princess. Host on your own server.

6. Prepare for “battle” – whether it’s a battle of the mind, a job you’re less than excited about or the need to kick some serious arse, regular, vigorous exercise will give you a mental and physical boost that can help you take control of other aspects of your life

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri Zampelli If negative self-talk, poor body image or being “too busy” often prevents you from adhering to your exercise routine, maybe my book From Sabotage to Success will help. I also frequently post workout playlists with songs that motivate me to move my body, check ‘em out, they might motivate you too.

Toastmasters Theme: Your Favorite Music for Holiday Cheer

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

I was recently the Toastmaster of the day at Agape Toastmasters and it was only a few days before most major December holidays. Since I’m such a music freak, I chose the topic “Your Favorite Music for Holiday Cheer”.

I created a playlist for the meeting on my iPod and brought my speaker doc to the meeting. At various points throughout the meeting I would play a snippet of music that was holiday oriented and coincided with something else going on in the meeting.

Our Table Topics master, Rhonda Fields was great about integrating music into her topics of the day which included:

1. “Have yourself a merry little Christmas, let your heart be light. From now on our troubles will be out of sight…” What would it be like to have your heart be light this Holiday season? What creates that lightness for you? Are there any troubles that you would put out of sight?

2. When you were a child do you remember your senses reacting to the holidays? Please share with us any smells, sounds, songs, images that you remember and how you felt about them?

3. What can you tell us about Rudolph the Reindeer’s background, his relationships, that glow thing going on with his nose – and anything else you know that might give us the true story about him…

4. If heaven and nature were to sing – as they do in the lyrics of the song “Joy to the World”– what would that look like, feel like, sound like to you…

5. If you were the God-parent to a 5 year old child who had not been around music much, what holiday song might you teach them to sing with you and why? What would that be like for you?

6. The first time you heard the lyrics to “Jingle Bells” – where might you have been? What was your world like at the time? How did you feel about that song, or any holiday song – and what was it like to be you back then?

7. If you were to pick a subject for a new holiday song that might open your heart, what would it be about? Tell us more about that song – the lyrics, the sound, the feeling…

8. If you could create the sounds, smells, images of a holiday afternoon that personally brought you joy, no matter what the rest of the world was doing – what might that be like? Please tell us about it…

9. If you could have a well-known singer, or any other person, (dead or alive) sing a holiday song to you, who would that be? What song would you choose? What locale would you choose and what would that experience be like for you?

10. In the lyrics from “The Christmas Song”, we are told: “Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe help to make the season bright. Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow will find it hard to sleep tonight.”

What might make the season bright for you? What makes your eyes all aglow? Has there ever been a holiday season that was brighter or more “all aglow” for you – and why?

I’d like to use music again next time I lead table topics. I was thinking I could play a snippet of music and speak some lyrics to get the topic started then let the unsuspecting Toastmaster get creative and add her/his own twist to finish it off. Have you tried using music in your table topics or speeches? If so, let us know about it.

Warrior Woman Workout Playlist

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated for your workout. Especially if you feel bad about your body or you’re in boring surroundings. I have a cure for you: The Warrior Woman Workout Playlist.

I’m warning you, this music is extremely high-energy and you will probably notice a difference in your body right away as you listen. Rather than drag your body unwillingly and lethargically through your 30 minute workout, why not glide like a gazelle or command your space like a warrior (or warrior princess).

This playlist will help set the tone for just that type of workout. I was on the treadmill at 3.0-5.0 miles for about 42 minutes with these tunes and I had a rockin’ good time. The majority of the time I was jogging, I only used the fast walk for warm up and cool down. All links go to iTunes.

Propellerheads Decksanddrumsandrockandroll I started off with On Her Majesty’s Secret Service by Propellerheads. This really set the tone for feelin’ a little James Bond meets Samantha Stevens. I was ready to raise the roof after this one. The song is 9:20 so it’s almost ten minutes of total starpower. Here are the songs that followed. I was in the zone!

Demons by Fatboy Slim

In Britain by Red Alert

Bodhisattva Vow by Beastie Boys

You’ll Never Change Me by Chron Gen

Drop That Thing by Groove Armada

Teenage Kicks by The Undertones

Annalisa by Public Image Ltd.

Cool down song:
Believe it or not, Playpen by Social Distortion. This band is kinda “slow/fast” I imagined one of the slow mosh pits I used to see develop at their live shows.

Skating, Beastie Boys and the Buddhist Monk

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Buddhist monk on 1st street in Long BeachIt was a beautiful day in Long Beach, CA. I decided to get my iPod and go skating. I was listening to the Beastie Boys, thinking how they sometimes put Buddhist philosophy in their songs and just then I saw a Buddhist monk.

I’ve seen him before.

We wave hello to each other when I’m roller skating with the wind flying through my hair and he’s walking meditatively. Today I asked him if I could take his picture. As you can see, he graciously said yes. He’s the most peaceful person I’ve run into for a long time.

Here are a few Beastie Boys songs that have a spiritual, unifying message wrapped in music you can groove to:

No Matter What by T.I.

Monday, December 29th, 2008

The lyrics in the hook of No Matter What by T.I. set the spirit of the music video.

(Hook)
I ain’t dead (nah) I ain’t done (nah)
I ain’t scared (of what?), I ain’t run (from Who?)
But still I stand (yeah)
No matter what pimpin’
here I am (Yeah)
No matter What

Apple iTunes

Remember I ain’t break (never), I ain’t fold (never)
They hate me more (so?)
Yeah I know (Ha, Ha)
Here I go (Yeah)
No matter what shawty,
here I go
No matter what shawty

(See the entire lyrics here)

I think T.I. owns his words completely in this video. He is very convincing and inspiring, rising above limitation and staying firm to his convictions. It’s a practice we can all benefit from, whether a rapper, punker, student, teacher or world leader.

What I Love about the Recession

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

The longer the recession lasts, the more creative I become. I didn’t realize what a consumer zombie I was until the credit was yanked right out from under me. Since I’m not spending money, I’m forced to entertain myself with the items I have on hand. I have a lot more than I realized. Isn’t that the American way?

Just today I got to enjoy this “old” stuff.

Rappers Delight by Sugar Hill Gang**Listened to Rapper’s Delight by Sugar Hill Gang on 12″ vinyl

**Went window shopping on Retro Row. Treated my fingers to the feel of cashmere and got two eyes full of the glitteriest costume jewelry in Long Beach

**Wore the sequin-covered vintage sweater I got for Christmas from Warehouse 1333 while shopping, felt “retro”. It added something to the whole experience

**Talked to the man at Via Roller Skates about outdoor skating in Long Beach the 2nd Friday of each month*

A Tribe Called Quest DVD Anthology**Watched A Tribe Called Quest A Video Anthology (which I completely forgot, has the Left My Wallet in Segundo video on it)

**Talked to my friend Rev. Ahman twice about movies, music, family, food and community

Apple iTunes

**Listened to Blood of Abraham and The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, my two new purchases from my iTunes gift card

P.S. If you like roller skating, come skate outdoors in Long Beach the second Friday of each month with other Long Beach residents. Meet at Via Roller Skates 2218 4th St. (inside Lil Devils) Long Beach, CA (267) 374-9674. I’m putting a note in my PalmPilot to remind me to go on January 9, 2009. Maybe I’ll see you there.

Live Music and a Little Long Beach for You

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

I oughta be ashamed of myself. As much as I love music and I’m always going on and on about it, I am occassionally 100% guilty of walking right past a street performer without so much as a glance in their direction. In fact, sometimes I get extra stiff because heaven forbid, they might need money. How dare they need money. I need money and it’s so awkward to say no.

Well, tonight two things happenend within 5 minutes of each other and it opened my heart to street performers once again. First, I clicked on a YouTube link in an e-mail from my friend Dr. Marjorie and it had this video in it. It’s all these amazing street performers from all corners of the world performing Stand By Me. (By the way, Seal just released a new album with Stand By Me on it, you might want to check it out if you’re into classic soul and Motown kind of stuff).

Not 5 minutes later, my husband urged me to come outside. “Listen, it’s real live carolers” he said. So, I went to check it out and to take it a step further, I went across the street to take their picture and guess what? They sang a song for me and only me. They even took requests. I asked for Silent Night. Here they are tuning themselves up to “play” it.

It was amazing and a little awkward to have all these people singing just for me but I opened my arms, smiled and said thank you. It felt good. After they sang for me they went to La Parolaccia restaurant. One of the best places for Italian food in Long Beach.

Here they are actually singing silent night.

I guess this is a wake up call for me to remember to enjoy my surroundings and give a little acknowledgement to the street musicians. I could tell by the looks on the faces in this group that they truly received joy from singing to people so it’s a win, win if you pay attention and give a smile once in a while. I needed to remember that.

P.S. Although I asked the group where they were from, I have now forgotten but I know they were affiliated with Cal State Long Beach. If you know the name, will you post it here please? Thank you.
