Brave Journalism and a Wake Up Call about Trauma from Gaza

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

We often hear stories of war torn countries and starving children. It seems so far away and foreign that it’s difficult to remember that there are real people, children included, with real feelings who are being traumatized and living sub-standard, terrifying lives. This is like child abuse magnified. The impact of this trauma is far reaching and long-term.

I believe that when we calculate the cost of war, we need to factor these traumatized children and their damaged lives into the picture. Notice the intensity of emotion and expression that this child in the video displays as she describes wearing gas soaked clothes, eating food that tastes like gas and living in terror everyday of her life.

I am no expert on trauma but I work closely with people who are and I can speak to the long-term impact of living in an unpredictable, violent, chaotic environment as a child. If you have experienced trauma and are looking for a healer, I would recommend Yaffa Balsam, James Hyman or Tina Tessina. Each person brings his or her own expertise into the mix. Balsam and Tessina are both licensed therapists, James Hyman is a shamanic healer who does Deep Emotional Release Bodywork.

Song of the Week – December 30, 2008 – Out of Time by Blur

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

The song of the week came to me scrawed on a piece of paper. Evidently Michael Zampelli was in the garage listening to music when this song came on and he didn’t want to forget it.

I watched the video for the first time just now and I was bawling 2 1/2 minutes in. So powerful. If I was into giving stars, I’d give this one a strong five.

Song of the Week – 11-25-08 – Self-Destruction by Stop the Violence Movement

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Old school hip-hop videos were about dropping the knowledge. Check out this 1989 video featuring KRS One. According to Wikipedia, “The Stop the Violence Movement was formed by rapper KRS-One in 1988/1989 in response to violence in the hip hop and black communities.”

Members of Stop the Violence Movement include: Public Enemy (Chuck D & Flavor Flav), Boogie Down Productions (KRS-One, D-Nice & Ms. Melodie), Kool Moe Dee, Doug E. Fresh,
Stetsasonic (Delite, Daddy-O, Wise & Fruitkwan), MC Lyte, Just-Ice and Heavy D.

Here’s a little extra knowledge, straight out of the Victimology textbook by Doerner and Lab. “In 2005, 49% of homicide victims were black and 49 percent white. This racial composition means that blacks experience an overrepresentation in homicide victimizations. Considering that blacks make up approximately 12 percent of the American population, all things being equal, one would expect that they would account for 12 percent of all murder victims.”

I’m no master statistician but I do know that 12 times 4 equals 48…so does that mean that blacks get murdered at four times the rate of whites?

It’s Kinda Like Welcome Back Kotter, In a Good Way

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

Do you remember the show Welcome Back Kotter? Well, it kinda reminds me of what it’s like in some of my college classes. I’m the “Kotter” for a group of vibrant and honest women on Thursday nights. The class is called Introduction to Victimology and we get into some pretty emotional discussions on a week to week basis. You wouldn’t believe some of the stories I heard. It’s a lot of fun and very rewarding.

Here’s what my student Tammi said to me in class tonight: “Ms. Zampenelli (I have no idea why she calls me that) you might be white, but you got a black soul, you different.”

I took it as a compliment.

I felt like maybe I was stepping into my big person’s shoes for an afternoon.

I have at least 3 important male figures who I admire and would want to “grow up and be like.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Robert F. Kennedy
and
Rev. Ahman

Barack Obama picture. Hope and ProgressWhat I like about each of these leaders is their ability to speak to the human spirit. It seems to me that Obama might be the next important male figure in my life and the life’s of many others.

I hope that we can be inspired not only by his presidential victory but also by his spirit and determination.

I hope we will follow his lead and take on those dreams that continue to call our names.

Whether it’s opening a homeless shelter or forming a corporation, we all have unexpressed dreams and now is a good time to dust them off, take them off the shelf and put them to good use.

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri ZampelliIf you need help overcoming self-sabotage so you can reach your leadership potential, check out my book, From Sabotage to Success. It will help you to learn more about who you are, what your gifts are and how you can be a valuable contribution in this world simply by letting go of self-sabotage and following your dreams.

Robert F. Kennedy on Peace and Unity in the U.S. During His 1968 Presidential Campaign

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Robert F Kennedy speaks to a crowd“I think that we can work together – I don’t think that we have to shoot at each other, to beat each other, to curse each other and criticize each other, I think that we can do better in this country. And that is why I run for President of the United States.”

Taken from a speech delivered to the University of Kansas in 1968. See the entire transcript at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum.

Peace Tour Hits Long Beach – Bluff Park/Belmont Shore Leg

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

Jaiya Figueras and Sheri ZampelliThe other day I blogged about freewayblogger.com and how I wanted to put up peace signs on 9/11. Well, I decided to put my money where my mouth is and to drag the Trainer on the Corner along with me. We put on skates and plastered fliers all along the street and bike path while we also had signs pinned to ourselves. We had a blast. He brought his video camera. Watch our fun video and read about the highlights below.

Here are some highlights:

  • We met a woman named Krista. She was walking her two dogs and stopped to ask what we were doing . She let us safety pin a “Love” sign to her back and she wore it on her walk.
  • People waved, gave us the “thumbs up” signal and honked their horns all morning.
  • The Jamba Juice girl, dressed in her finest banana suit stopped to have her picture taken with us. At the same time, we looked around to notice people taking pictures of us having our picture taken.
  • The (owner? manager?..I should have gotten her name) from Archibald’s came out of her business to shoot photos of us as we were posting signs across the street. We decided to skate over and say hi. She had her picture taken with us and let us put peace and love signs in her window. She also gave us both American flags and pinned them to our shirts for us.
  • A small group of Asian seniors turned around in their chairs and grinned ear to ear as they watched the entire spectacle.
  • We skated into the Gazette offices and told them if they want a positive news story, here we are. They were on a deadline but we’ll go ahead and e-mail them later.

By the way, if you subscribe to this you can get a PDF of all three of the signs we’ve posted so far, the Laugh sign, the Peace Sign and the Love sign. You’ll also get a free PDF: Songs to Galvanize Your Mind. Look for the sign up box on this page or go to: http://sherizampelli.com.
