Song of the Week – 5-11-10 – Tear Down That Wall by Mistachuck (Chuck D/Public Enemy)

This week's song is a hip hop response to the Arizona Immigration bill SB1070 by Chuck D (Public Enemy). You can listen to the MP3 here or you can "right-click" on the link and download the MP3 to your computer or iTunes library. Below is a public statement from Chuck D (Public Enemy) and his wife Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson Professor Of Black Studies and Chicano Studies UC Santa Barbara: “Jan Brewer’s decision to sign the Arizona immigration bill into law is racist, deceitful, and reflects some of the most mean-spirited politics against immigrants that the country has ever seen. The power that this law gives to police, to detain people that they suspect to be undocumented, brings racial profiling to a new low. Brewer’s actions and those of Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, the Arizona State Senate are despicable, inexcusable, and endorse the all-out hate campaign that Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, and others have perpetrated upon immigrants for years. The people of Arizona who voted for this bill, as well as those who crafted it, demonstrate no regard for the humanity or contributions of Latino people. And for all of those who have chosen not to speak up, shame on you for silently endorsing this legislated hate. In 1991 I wrote a song criticizing Arizona officials (including John McCain and Fife Symington) for rejecting the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The same politics I wrote about in “By the Time I Get to Arizona” are alive and well in Arizona today, but this time the target is Brown people. These actions must stop. I am issuing a call to action, urging my fellow musicians, artists, athletes, performers, and production companies to refuse to work in Arizona until officials not only overturn this bill, but recognize the human rights of immigrants. This should include the NBA playoffs, revisiting the actions of the NFL in 1993, when they moved the Superbowl to Pasadena in protest against Arizona’s refusal to recognize Dr. King. We all need to speak up in defense of our brothers and sisters being victimized in Arizona, because things are only getting worse. What they’re doing to immigrants is appalling, but it will be even more damning if we remain silent.” Buy music by Public Enemy on iTunes Watch the video on YouTube Check out more on their MySpace page. The Expolited Are In My Head

Ah, nothing like sitting in the back yard watching spiders weave webs and humming birds dive bomb the feeder with Mucky Pup playing endlessly in the back of my mind. The call to hear this song was so persistent that here I am posting their YouTube recordings of Mucky Pup and Punks Not Dead. itunes_icon If you've gotta have this on your iPod, buy Exploited on iTunes today. When I realize that I've heard these recordings no less than 100's of times each, it makes sense why I am how I am. Apple iTunes

‘Funkin’ Long Beach Sundown Walk’ Playlist

I just walked in the door after an hour long walk on the beach. It was sundown and Long Beachians were buzzing around on the boardwalk staying active and fit. They were on skates, they were on bikes, they were on foot. Some were in pairs, girlfriends keeping each other up to date on the latest, a father and his son riding bikes. Some were alone, just them and their iPod. I was in the latter category of people, rocking out to my favorite tunes and taking in the scenery as if I was watching a movie. My 'bring it on home' song was Dazz by Brick (video here), one of my favorite funk songs, a song I did not hear at the Long Beach Funk Fest this weekend.itunes_icon Here are the other songs that laid the soundtrack for a spectacular, energizing walk in Long Beach. Playlist to Endure a Brutal Workout

I'm telling you, Jaiya Figueras is a nice guy but he doesn't hold back on unleashing a little brutality here and there during our Bluff Park workouts. Although I'm not in the video on this page, you can go to the Your Next Victory Website to see me working out in all my pinkness. Jaiya is the kind of guy who will smile wide and give you a high five while encouraging you to do one more push up, run a little faster or squat a little lower. He will not take no for an answer and he laughs off most excuses for lack of performance then says, "keep going." I love Jaiya and what his workouts do for my body and mind but sometimes I need a little music to help me endure and to take my mind off the fact that I'm just about ready to belch, throw up or give up. Here are the songs I listened to today while we did things like moutain climbers, Spiderman crawls, tree hand stands and tug-of-war. Even though the workouts are brutal, the music transports me back to the days when I rode my bike everywhere (because I didn't have a car) and then went to shows at night and slammed/danced to music until the wee hours of the morning. When I'm in that mode, working out is a privledge and a joy, not a chore. I look forward to becoming stronger and more agile as time progresses. This is definitely a shift from the "I'm too old for this" thoughts I had when I first started these intense workouts. In fact, one of the best benefits of working out with Jaiya is the realization that my limiting, fearful thoughts are nothing more than mental chatter because the truth is, I can do it and I'm getting better all the time.

Riding my Pink Beach Cruiser in Long Beach, Listenin’ to my iPod

Long Beach bike path ride listening to iPodToday, when I was on my way out for a bike ride, my husband (rinkrat) seized the opportunity to test his new camera equipment. I didn't mind modeling at all because I've been wanting to document how cool bike riding can be and I love to share my iPod playlists with you. I listened to some good tunes on my ride and I'll list them all below. Long Beach bike pathThere were a lot of people on the bike path today. I cruised through a group of 30-40 year old hipsters with tattoos. I tried to capture it on my cell phone camera but there really is nothing like being there, rocking out to some seriously cool music, feeling the wind on your face and the vibration of the bike wheels, the bike seat and the rhythm of the wheels spinning in circles. If you use your imagination, it's kinda like slamming in the pit or doing roller derby. I mean, it can be, if you want it to be. Give it a try, get on your bike, listen to your favorite tunes and put a smile on your face. That's the difference between working out on machines like a rat in a cage and being a free spirit with a free body. Exercise is invigorating and empowering and it takes little or no equipment to get the benefits of increasing your heart rate and building your muscles. Playlist for this Sunday Afternoon bike ride: Its pretty hard to sit still when you listen to stuff like this (links go to iTunes): Price of Gas by Bloc Party off Silent Alarm (Isn't the price of gas on everyone's mind?) Grooving to music on the ipodThis photo captures the feeling I enjoy when I listen to good music and stay in the zone. When I feel like this, life is fun, easy and inspired and I am Gal VanIZed.
