War Dance is Good for Warrior Workouts and Your Next Victory

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010
I am a warrior in training. This includes workouts with Jaiya Figueras of Your Next Victory on the Bluff at Long Beach. What better way to mentally train for warrior status than to rock out to this tune and let it sink into your bones. I try to record a lot of movement in this video because it is symbolic of how the music moves me and the energy that bounces around inside of me when I hear it. If you'd like to see me moving instead of the record cover, you can check out my latest birthday video where my husband captures me hula hooping, jumping on the trampoline and lip-synching to punk rock. My outfit is the equivalent of "drag queen" style with inspiration from Phyllis Diller, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers. Check it out on YouTube>>> Recently I have joined forces with Jaiya Figueras of Your Next Victory. In addition to our warrior workouts on the bluff in Long Beach, we have recorded some video about how trauma and exercise are related. I wrote a blog about it titled Why do people break down and cry when they exercise? I think it will be a real eye-opener for some people who just think they're "lazy" because they can't seem to ever get motivated to exercise. What motivates me is music. Here's a link to a few of my workout playlists. Enjoy and dare to activate your inner-warrior.

Gal Vanized Birthday Celebration – Hula Hooping to Naked Raygun (feat. Jake Burns)

Sunday, November 21st, 2010
Yesterday was my birthday and I decided to have the best time ever and to do things that bring me joy. After all these years, my husband and I have finally surrendered to the fact that I won't grow out of my wildness anytime soon. So I had him shoot this video of me lip synching, hula hooping and jumping to Suspect Device with Naked Raygun (feat. Jake Burns of Stiff Little Fingers). I've been living most of my 45 years trying to please others and "tone it down". Although Gal Vanized had an appearance in the 80's, during the height of the Punk Rock scene in Los Angeles and a brief stint of fun with the L.A. Derby Dolls, at other times, she went deeeeep into hiding. Today is her official re-birth day. As stated in an earlier video, I'm "gettin' too old for this B.S." and it's time to galvanize. Alyse Leads a Power-Packed Postpunky Band Named EULA

Sunday, October 17th, 2010
If you've ever rocked out to the sounds of Sonic Youth, Bow Wow Wow, Vice Squad or Plasmatics, you're bound to dig the sounds of EULA. Lead by female vocalist Alyse Lamb (vocals, guitar, keys); Jeff Maleri (bass, vocals); Nate Rose (drums, vocals). One of my favorite quotes about EULA is from Left Hip Magazine: "Totally classic art-school, indie pop, takes me back to the salad days of DIY zines when music was fun." I say Yes to that. Ditto to how I feel about EULA. Another great quote about EULA comes from Gimme Tinnitus, "I can summarize for you. Indie rock filled with postpunky goodness." EULA has just released a new demo and I'll admit, after years of punk-rock fandom in the 80's and 90's, I'm still a sucker for a hand-drawn, xeroxed flier and a CD "label" designed with a little help from a Sharpie. And I'll also admit, I'm still a sucker for finding out about something cool WAY before hoards of other people do. The only thing that's changed is that thanks to the Internet I can share it real time and have "proof" of my findings...plus a few extra SEO points. If you want to find out about something very cool WAY before hoards of other people do, get over to their MySpace page and listen to their demo or check out some of their music on iTunes. This band has what it takes to make it. I hope I'll get a chance to see them live before they explode. Fight Riff by EULA was my song of the week on March 24, 2009, click here to check out the Fight Riff video. The Serious Side of Antoine Dodson and His Family

Sunday, August 29th, 2010
If you spend more time on the internet than you do watching T.V.; if you get a major chunk of your media input from YouTube, you have no doubt heard of Internet sensation Antoine Dodson. Dodson (up until recently) lived in the projects in Huntsville, Alabama called Lincoln Park. One night, while he was minding his own business hanging out on Facebook, he heard his sister scream. He ran to her room and saw her struggling with a bed intruder, a man who was trying to rape her. The rapist was scared away before he was able to carry out his sexual assault. When news cameras arrived at Dodson's doorstep, he was still angry, scared and worked up over the ordeal. He was very animated on camera and it was entertaining to watch. So entertaining that the Gregory Brothers, who are known for auto-tuning the news made a song of it and took it viral. At this point in time the Antoine Dodson Bed Intruder song has about 14.5 million views on YouTube. At one point, it was #3 on the iTunes popularity list. Bed Intruder Song (Remix) (feat. Kelly Dodson) - Antoine Dodson Bed Today I heard a little bit of the story that put a twist on things for me. Dodson's sister has a 2-year old daughter. The daughter is aware of the trauma and tragedy and she is scared. She is scared for herself and she's scared for her mom. I am currently teaching a class about Victimology at Long Beach City College and we talked about sexual abuse just last Thursday. We watched a video by Marilyn Van Derbur called "Once Can Hurt a Lifetime" and we talked about all the ways sexual abuse impacts the survivor. Here's what we came up with (click on image to enlarge): Despite all these known consequences for sexual assault survivors, resources to help people are a very low priority on our list at voting time. The impact of lack of funding is evidenced by the closure of Sexual Assault Crisis Agency in Long Beach. For those who need support with overcoming the impact of sexual assault, a good place to start is RAINN (Rape Abuse and Incest National Network). In class we also talked about some of the ways abusers wield power and control over others. Here's our list (click on image to enlarge): We discussed how gaining personal power was a positive step to avoid falling prey to victimizers. What Are Your Influences?

Thursday, August 26th, 2010
Every musical act has influences. The Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest influenced each other. Punk bands from the U.K. influenced garage bands in Southern California and vice versa. Reggae and dub influenced each other. What are your influences? That's what we talked about in Helping and Listening Skills this week. We came up with a great list and I liked it so much I took a picture of it. I asked the students to tell me about the things that influence them. What do they value? Why do they do what they do; love what they love? This is the list they came up with: Parents Environment -Friends -Neighborhood -Peers -Religion Culture Schools Food/Nutrition Media Mental Illness Life Experience -Observation Socio-Economic Status ($$$) Books Music Relationships Friendships Family -Uncles -Aunts -Brothers -Sisters -etc. Role Model -Coach -Minister -Teacher Law Government Health Medication/Drugs Language Sleep Fashion Freedom Travel Pets Sex Arts -Pictures -Painting -Dance Entertainment Perception The point I want to make in this class is that you cannot know any of these things about yourself or anyone else unless you first learn how to listen. A great Master Mind group is one that's committed to honoring and respecting each other and that includes listening unconditionally and without judgment. It is honoring a person to trust that they know what's best for their own life. --------------- Start a Master Mind Group.comWhen you think about it, every musical act you know of is using the Master Mind principle whether they realize it or not. My iPod is my Guru

Sunday, August 8th, 2010
What a crazy weekend this has been. Actually, it started on Thursday with The Sheri and Erin Show. I'll fill you in on the details later. But let's just say that after a wild night at Funk Fest, a fun day in L.A. for a photo shoot and a Master Mind breakfast with Erin, I am pumped up. When my energy is too intense to contain, I put my iPod on shuffle and go for a walk. It's awesome how the songs that come up at random are always in line with where things are in life right now. Here's what I heard today on my walk, do you notice a theme? (Click on links to preview or buy these songs on iTunes). Gratitude (Live at Budokan) by Beastie Boys The Skills to Pay the Bills (Original Version) by Beastie Boys O Holy Night by Nat King Cole Money Grows on Trees (remix feat. Kiana) by The Sky Beneath Climax (Girl Shit) by Slum Village Thoughts of Yesterday by T.S.O.L. Conscious Man by Dr. Alimantado Retreat (Drum and Bass song from unknown artist) Get the Songs to Galvanize Your Mind playlist, available for immediate download.

Song of the Week – 5-11-10 – Tear Down That Wall by Mistachuck (Chuck D/Public Enemy)

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010
This week's song is a hip hop response to the Arizona Immigration bill SB1070 by Chuck D (Public Enemy). You can listen to the MP3 here or you can "right-click" on the link and download the MP3 to your computer or iTunes library. Below is a public statement from Chuck D (Public Enemy) and his wife Dr. Gaye Theresa Johnson Professor Of Black Studies and Chicano Studies UC Santa Barbara: “Jan Brewer’s decision to sign the Arizona immigration bill into law is racist, deceitful, and reflects some of the most mean-spirited politics against immigrants that the country has ever seen. The power that this law gives to police, to detain people that they suspect to be undocumented, brings racial profiling to a new low. Brewer’s actions and those of Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, the Arizona State Senate are despicable, inexcusable, and endorse the all-out hate campaign that Joe Arpaio, Russell Pearce, and others have perpetrated upon immigrants for years. The people of Arizona who voted for this bill, as well as those who crafted it, demonstrate no regard for the humanity or contributions of Latino people. And for all of those who have chosen not to speak up, shame on you for silently endorsing this legislated hate. In 1991 I wrote a song criticizing Arizona officials (including John McCain and Fife Symington) for rejecting the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The same politics I wrote about in “By the Time I Get to Arizona” are alive and well in Arizona today, but this time the target is Brown people. These actions must stop. I am issuing a call to action, urging my fellow musicians, artists, athletes, performers, and production companies to refuse to work in Arizona until officials not only overturn this bill, but recognize the human rights of immigrants. This should include the NBA playoffs, revisiting the actions of the NFL in 1993, when they moved the Superbowl to Pasadena in protest against Arizona’s refusal to recognize Dr. King. We all need to speak up in defense of our brothers and sisters being victimized in Arizona, because things are only getting worse. What they’re doing to immigrants is appalling, but it will be even more damning if we remain silent.” Buy music by Public Enemy on iTunes Watch the video on YouTube Check out more on their MySpace page. The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records. For almost 30 years, this mecca of punk and alternative music kept Southern California enthusiasts adequately supplied with unique, original and innovative music. Currently, Zampelli manages a hockey fan message boards at www.letsgokings.com with thousands of subscribers. He takes photos for the LAist and the LA Derby Dolls.
