Roller Derby Practice Pictures

Gal VanIZed at Fresh Meat practiceSunday's from 6-8 p.m. is the time for L.A. Derby Dolls Fresh Meat practice. 15-30 women congregate in a warehouse to push each other to the limit both mentally and physically. We are prompted to go at our own pace but also to push ourselves past what we think is possible. This photo is a good milestone for me. It shows me doing crossovers in the turn and that was something I could not do when I first started. I was like a calf straight out of the horse. My legs felt gangly and out of control, my back was slumped, I could barely bend my knees to save my life. Now, I can skate the track with a little bit of skill. It feels good to improve and to have proof of it. I'd like to take this opportunity to let you know about Fresh Meat practices and the upcoming L.A. Derby Dolls Jr. Derby Camp. I will post a complete blog about Jr. Derby Camp tomorrow. Come back and see how you can help a young woman you love to build self-esteem, confidence and inner strength by sending her to jr. roller derby camp. Visit www.derbydolls.com for details. By the way, there is a complete photo gallery with lots of lovely fresh meat practice photos at www.letsgokings.com and also on Rinkrat's Flikr page.

Celestial Offerings Wins in the Bixby Knolls Photo Contest

Angel Food fly-throughCelestial Offerings, by Michael Zampelli (aka Rinkrat) creates an association that provokes an idea that this is some sort of drive-thru donut for angels in need of nourishment. The photo caught the attention of judges and the general public and was chosen as winner of the Bixby Knolls Summer Shutters photo contest in the category of 'best sign'. To see other winners, including one of my favorites: Fairies of Bixby Knolls by Phil Harvey, visit http://www.bixbyknollsinfo.com/summershutters.html

L.A. Kings Penalty Box at Staples Center

I have enjoyed hockey for years and consider myself a fan, but not a fanatic. Today I realized why hockey is so cool. My husband runs large Los Angeles Kings fan site (www.letsgokings.com) and this weekend we were invited to preview an up-and-coming attraction that will soon be available to devoted fans. We got to sit in the penalty box at the Staples Center and watch the Los Angeles Kings up close and personal as they warmed up in preparation for the evening's game. Here we are when we first got on the ice. We had to walk across the ice to get to the penalty box. Luckily, no one fell. Here we are when we first got in the penalty box. L.A. Kings Penalty Box at Staples Center I knew it would be cool to be in the penalty box. But I didn't know it was going to rock my world! This is about as live as it gets! We were eye level with the players which is something almost no one experiences during the game except staff and camera crew. This game is so fast and fluid and the warm up was pretty exciting. As chaotic and wild as hockey is, there is also this synchronicity and teamwork that I think is unparalleled in sports like North American football and baseball. Even in the warm up it's amazing how these guys can go from standing still to speeding across the ice in a matter of seconds. The players and the pucks were whizzing by at lightining speed and look at how close I am to Los Angeles Kings goal tender Mathieu Garon. I literally felt like a kid in a candy store! By the way, the Los Angeles Kings will be offering a variety of opportunities like this to their fans in the future. Other opporunities include:
  • Team photographer for a day
  • Zamboni Ride
  • Announce the Kings for warm-ups
  • Broadcaster for a night
  • DJ for a night
  • and more
