I submitted an audition to Oprah on Sunday. I’m asking you to vote for me to get my OWN T.V. talk show.

In my audition, I tell Oprah I want to talk to roller derby girls. And I mean it. It’s a fast growing sport that empowers women and it is fun to watch. In the 70’s, everyone watched it and loved it. Let’s get it back on T.V.

I want a show thats a mix between Soul Train and old school Oprah. You know, when she used to have real-life, everyday people on and they’d tell amazing stories and experience transformation before your eyes.

How about if we do transformative shows and mix it up with fun stuff like music and roller derby? That’s what I want to do and you can help me by voting today. Vote early, vote often. Your opportunity to vote ends June 3.

I submitted an audition tape to Oprah on Sunday. I’m hoping that you will vote for me to get my OWN T.V. talk show. We taped the audition in front of a live audience. Between takes I did a little dancing, a little rapping and a little jumping up and down. All caught on video.

It was a time of deciding that I was going to be myself and I was going to give up worry and concern about doing things the “right” way. I also decided it was time for some fun in my life. Starting a blog has been a great form of self-expression for me and has also helped me to reconnect with my Life.

To date, I have posted 405 blogs. That’s an average of 3.9 per week for the past 2 years. I have enjoyed every minute of it. Documenting my journey has made it real and it has transformed my life because I have a constant visual reminder of who I am and what is important to me. I cannot see this anywhere else in the world except by looking at my creations.

When I look to the outside world, I get a set of rules, regulations and expectations of who I “should” be based on the fact that I’m a White, 44-year-old, female, college instructor and published author. Many times people look right at me and seem to be listening to what I’m saying yet it is clear, they do not see me, they see a stereotype and they hold on to a set of expectations of who they think I am.

I am not interested in being what I “should” be, I am interested in being me and in finding the people who can respect and honor that. I am interested in connecting with people of like-mind and people who are brave enough to be authentic. I hope you enjoy the contents of the blog and also that it gives you courage and initiative to be who YOU are and to dare to share that with the world. It’s not always easy but it’s fun, exciting and exhilarating. It is Life at it’s best and that is worth celebrating.

Children of the Night is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing and empowering children who have been forced into prostitution. This is the second year that they have worked with L.A. Derby Dolls on Big Sunday.

After skating, community service is the most important thing that the L.A. Derby Dolls do. The Dolls have worked with the Human Rights Campaign, St. Vincent Medical Center (for a women’s health and wellness clinic), After School All Stars, and M.E.N.D, among many other projects, and were honored in 2009 as a Treasure of Los Angeles by the Central City Association (an honor that puts the Dolls in the company of the L.A. Dodgers and Magic Johnson).

Big Sunday is an annual weekend that takes place in the spring when thousands of people from Southern California, of all ages and all backgrounds, work together at hundreds of nonprofits, schools and other agencies that need their help. Big Sunday Weekend is one of the largest regional community service events in America.

Celebrate the anticipation of New Year’s Eve with three members of the Derby Dolls. Kelly ka-BOOM, Pushy Whipped and Asa Hearts will be guests on The Sheri and Erin Show December 31, 2009.

Kelly ka-BOOM is a member of the Tough Cookies, the team that won the Championships in 2008 and 2009. She played her last bout on December 5. ka-BOOM will talk to us about what she describes as the best 6 years of her life. Ka-BOOM is a model and actor in Los Angeles. We will also interview L.A. Derby Dolls Pushy Whipped and Asa Hearts to find out more about behind the scenes roller derby.

Classes include: Plyo-endurance, Skills for Thrills on the Banked Track and Punk Rope (off-skates). All classes are instructed by LA Derby Dolls. Cost for the program is $10/hr class and a $40 Derby Por Vida membership fee.

The Tough Cookies became two-time champions on Saturday night when they challenged The Swarm at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles. Final score: 107-91.

One night in roller derby practice, I had to jump over the back seat of a Chevy Corvair on roller skates. The prospect of it terrified me but the end result of taking a risk and having success was life-transforming.

In this 6 minute video taped at Agape Toastmasters, I talk about how jumping over that car seat, even though I was initially convinced I couldn’t, was proof to me that my mind doesn’t always tell the truth and maybe I shouldn’t take it so seriously. L.A. Derby Dolls trainer Alex Cohen (AKA Axels of Evil) trained the women in basic derby skills. Then, they experienced the thrill of assuming roller derby alter egos and going up against L.A. Derby Doll veterans such as P.I.T.A., Gori Spelling, Judy Gloom and Razor Slut.
