Life is The Only Thing Worth Living For

old_fliersToday my brother sent me an e-mail with the title : "flipper next weekend in sf -- i'm there!" I immediately got excited for him and a tad bit jealous and then, the bass line for "Life" started playing in my head. I had to run to my iTunes and crank it up. No truer words have been spoken: Life is the only thing worth living for. Of course I couldn't help to also reminisce about the roadtrip I took with my friends in the 80's. We drove from Los Angeles to San Francisco and our soul mission was a see Flipper. (See the yellow flyer from the show in the photo above which I still cherish). Mission accomplished and well worth sleeping in the car for :) Here's the video from YouTube, granted, the visuals are lacking but close your eyes and listen and you'll get the picture. Or, better yet, keep your eyes wide open and scream along. I included the lyrics below. Lyrics for Life I too have sung death's praises But I'm not gonna sing that song anymore 'Cause I've found out what living is all about and its Life! Life! Life is the only thing worth living for Yeah life! life! Life is the only thing worth... Life! life! Song of the Week – 1-6-09 – I Am by Novel with Talib Kweli feat. Ben Folds

Music influences are like a web that unites musicians and music lovers together. In my last post I mentioned how Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio is a rendition of Pastime Paradise by Stevie Wonder. The song of the week is also a blend of different visions from different artists. The song that inspired Novel to write I Am was a piece by Ben Folds from his Rockin' The Suburbs album under the title The Luckiest. Talib Kweli and Novel put their own spin on it and titled it I Am. It's available on the I Am (Future Black President) EP. The first YouTube video below is a music video for the song, the second video is a rough edit video of Ben Folds and Novel talking about the united effort in making this track possible. Sample lyrics for I Am by Novel and Talib Kweli I'm as free as a spirit I'm as fly as a bird I'm whatever I want to be As long as I am heard I'm a product of the ghetto my father's boy I'm a brother to my sisters My mother's pride and joy I am not of this world I am something else I am something lived I am something felt I am the new generation's beat writer The Jack Kerouac influence I am the hippie peace fighter The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records. Stay Positive by The Hold Steady

I'm always thinking about what I learned by being involved in the punk movement early in it's development. I have first hand experience seeing everyday blokes get high in the garage in the daytime and stand on stage in the night time. I admired their determination and was entertained by their music but I didn't really idolize them because I knew they were the same dudes who were dope sick in the morning and threw their smelly socks on the floor. Musicians are just people who are really creative and determined and somehow, when you get four guys together with ideas for songs they can make it happen eventually...if they can learn to work together somehow. The bands that didn't make it were mainly the ones who fought, got too heavy into drugs or didn't have a common vision (which usually caused the fights). itunes logoStay Positive by Hold Steady pretty much sums up my feelings about the underground music scene and life in general. So, I thought I'd share. Listen to a clip or buy it on iTunes. Read Lyrics to Stay Positive by The Hold Steady I've got a lot of old friends that're getting back in touch and it's a pretty good feeling yea it feels pretty good I get a lot of double takes when I'm coming around the corners and its mostly pretty nice its mostly pretty alright 'cause most kids give me credit for being down with it when it was back in the day back when things were way different when the Youth of Today and the early Seven Seconds taught me some of life's most valuable lessons There's gonna come a time when the scene'll seem less sunny it'll probably get druggy and the kids'll seem too skinny there's gonna come a time when she's gonna have to go with whoever's gonna get her the highest there's gonna come a time when the true scene leaders forget where they differ and get 'big picture' cause the kids at their shows, they'll have kids of their own the sing-a-long songs'll be our scriptures We gotta stay positive We gotta stay positive We gotta stay positive We gotta stay positive Musical Interlude When the chaperone crowned us the king and the queen I knew that we'd arrived at a unified scene and all those little lambs from my dreams well they were there too 'cause its one thing to start it with a positive jam and its another thing to see it all through and we couldn't of even done this if it wasn't for you We gotta stay positive We gotta stay positive We gotta stay positive P.S. Well, maybe this could be the ending with nothing left of you A hundred wishes couldn't say I don't want to And as we sit here alone Looking for a reason to go on It's so clear that all we have now Are our thoughts of yesterday La La La La... Song of the Week – 9-30-08 – Good Time by The Brazilian Girls

Brazilian Girls widget by 6L & AC
This week's song presents a simple concept: having a good time, all the time. It's probably what most people ultimately want but sometimes we think we need to have, be or do something to accomplish it. Other times, we're just stuck in a cycle of repeating past drama. I've been guilty of both. But for now I'm gonna let that go and see if I can have a good time all the time despite it all. itunes logoBuy Good Time by Brazilian Girls on iTunes The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records.
