Galvanized Facebook Friday 02-04-11 – Music, Technology and Memory Lane

Friday, February 4th, 2011
There are so many things to listen to and see these days.  I recently got a Roku player that allows me to not only watch streaming Netflix but to watch YouTube videos on my TV, to tune into iTunes Podcasts on my TV and to listen to alternative radio from San Francisco via SomaFM (I like the Groove Salad myself). As mind-blowing as all that is/was, the thing that excited me the most this week was discovering an episode of Soul Train from the 80's with appearances from Run DMC and Dazz.  In the same episode, a boy named Jesse made a "wish" with a then relatively small organization called, "Make a Wish Foundation" to dance on Soul Train.  Jesse was 9 and had luekemia and this boy could bust a move.  Needless to say, I pressed "keep until I delete" on my Tivo so I can watch this again and again. Here's a video of the interview Run DMC did on Soul Train. After watching this episode, it got me thinking about the Beastie Boys and A Tribe Called Quest.  That sent me looking for a good Beastie Boys tune to listen to.  I chose High Plains Drifter. One of the things I love about Hip Hop is the storytelling aspect and how the artists weave so many associations into one song.  This video demonstrates visually how many tie-ins you can cram into one song. I used to listen to all these songs over and over again trying to figure out all the references and innuendos. All this "trippin'" down memory lane reminded me of how my brothers and I used to dance to Yo MTV Raps and how one of my brothers was dedicated enough to get cardboard, lay it out in the driveway and practice break dancing moves...yes, to Run DMC and maybe even Grand Master Flash if I remember correctly. Or maybe that was ME. Yes, I went to see Grand Master Flash twice in Hollywood in the 80's.  An experience worth remembering. My brothers and I had a lot of fun growing up thanks to music and still to this day we enjoy listening to old-school rap and hip hop at family reunions.  I am especially entertained as I watch the looks on people's faces when I tell them that. Have a great weekend and get galvanized! P.S. I'm beginning to think it might be a good idea to have a Facebook page for iamgalvanized.com that's separate from my Sheri Zampelli page on Facebook. If you'd like to follow my activity on Facebook, and stay galvanized all week long, go to the new page I created and click "like."

I Want Roller Derby on My OWN T.V. Show

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010
I submitted an audition to Oprah on Sunday. I'm asking you to vote for me to get my OWN T.V. talk show. In my audition, I tell Oprah I want to talk to roller derby girls. And I mean it. It's a fast growing sport that empowers women and it is fun to watch. In the 70's, everyone watched it and loved it. Let's get it back on T.V. I want a show thats a mix between Soul Train and old school Oprah. You know, when she used to have real-life, everyday people on and they'd tell amazing stories and experience transformation before your eyes. How about if we do transformative shows and mix it up with fun stuff like music and roller derby? That's what I want to do and you can help me by voting today. Vote early, vote often. Your opportunity to vote ends June 3.

I Spoke ‘Rapper’s Delight’ with My College Students during Oprah Audition

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010
I submitted an audition tape to Oprah on Sunday. I'm hoping that you will vote for me to get my OWN T.V. talk show. We taped the audition in front of a live audience. Between takes I did a little dancing, a little rapping and a little jumping up and down. All caught on video. I want a show that's a mix between Soul Train and old school Oprah. You know, when you used to have real-life, everyday people on and they'd tell amazing stories and experience transformation before your eyes. How about if we do that with fun stuff like music and roller derby and stories? That's what I want to do and you can help me by voting today. Voting ends June 3.

Music to Soar Like a Superhero

Saturday, October 10th, 2009
steviewondersongslifeOkay, maybe this only applies if you're over 40 but the truth is, when I hear funk and soul from the 70's I feel like a superhero. I think afros and bell bottoms, I think bangs and wings in your hair. I think platforms, Elton John and Wonder Woman. I especially think dancing...you know, like Soul Train or something. I looked forward to Soul Train every Saturday morning. How about you? wonderwomanIf so, you'll probably like the Stevie Wonder channel I created on Pandora.com. Come check it out if you want to groove 70's style. Pandora makes for great background music while you're working. There are very few commercials and the sounds are exactly what you want them to be. Here's a video from YouTube with a little Soul Train action. I used to try and steal these moves when I was 10. *************************************************** If you like smart, witty talk radio for people who aren't afraid to be their own authentic selves, check out The Sheri and Erin Show on Blog Talk Radio. Soul Train Saturday Featuring Barack Obama

Thursday, February 26th, 2009
I was vegetating in my recliner letting my mind wander when a memory of Soul Train seized me. I used to watch Soul Train every single Saturday morning of my childhood in the 70's. I always wanted to be one of the dancers who was up on the second story. Usually that means you had some serious groove. To the best of my knowledge, I never saw Barack Obama on Soul Train, but who knows, maybe I did. Reportedly the man with boogyin' down the Soul Train at about 3:25 is the one and only President of the United States, Barack Obama. Check it out for yourself and see what you think. Apple iTunes
