Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

I just finished listening to a live teleseminar featuring Marianne Williamson. It was so filled with bits of wisdom to galvanize women that I found myself Tweeting quotes throughout the show. This call was part of the Women on the Edge of Evolution teleseries.

Her topic was Sister Giant: Rousing the Sleeping Giant of American Womanhood. You can listen to it on-line here.

She’s going to do a Sister Giant: Rousing the Sleeping Giant of American Womanhood event in Los Angeles on February 26, 27 and 28. Sign up here. Scholarships are available for those who can’t come due to lack of funds.

Radio Interview with Dr. Judy Krings for the Carol Solomon Show

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

A few weeks ago I had a very enjoyable phone interview with Dr. Judy Krings. She was interviewing me regarding my book, Donate Your Weight. Dr. Judy and I really hit it off and in this one hour recording we got to talk about all kinds of things including behavior modification, hypnosis, self-love, spirituality, law of attraction and much more.

Having this interview made me excited about podcasting again. In a separate blog I’ll tell you about the return of the Donate Your Weight podcast with co-host Dr. Marjorie Miles.

In the meantime, you can subscribe to the show on iTunes by clicking on the iPod. That way, you’ll get the first show with the new show format on March 3. We’ll be talking about how to stop the struggle with weight and eating and how to use your self-talk to create the life you want.

Mr. Lif to Release “I Heard it Today”

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Mr. Lif isn’t afraid to create an album that speaks brazenly about current political issues. He addresses the fear, paranoia, and angst resulting from the collapse of the U.S. economy. He raps about the bailout bill, self hatred in the Black community, and the housing crisis.

Lif takes these negatives and uses them as a impetus to search for a healthier way of life. He wants to use his realizations as a way to achieve freedom and peace of mind through the power of the imagination. In a true “change starts with you” move, Lif will self-release his album on his own label, Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Look for it on April 21, 2009. For now, you can check him out on MySpace or listen to his track Arise right here on this page.

Skating, Beastie Boys and the Buddhist Monk

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

Buddhist monk on 1st street in Long BeachIt was a beautiful day in Long Beach, CA. I decided to get my iPod and go skating. I was listening to the Beastie Boys, thinking how they sometimes put Buddhist philosophy in their songs and just then I saw a Buddhist monk.

I’ve seen him before.

We wave hello to each other when I’m roller skating with the wind flying through my hair and he’s walking meditatively. Today I asked him if I could take his picture. As you can see, he graciously said yes. He’s the most peaceful person I’ve run into for a long time.

Here are a few Beastie Boys songs that have a spiritual, unifying message wrapped in music you can groove to:

A Reminder from The Banger Sisters

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon - The Banger SistersI happened to be channel surfing when I tuned into the end portion of The Banger Sisters. It’s when the uptight mom (played by Susan Sarandon) shows up to her daughter’s graduation in skin-tight lycra pants and spikey hair after a night of partying in the bar and flirting with guys.

The daughter, a beautiful, spunky blond is delivering the graduation speech. She begins to talk about how she’d rather be fighting with her family than pretending everything was perfect. It was a healing moment for several of the women in the family.

I am amazed at how so many women lose themselves one little bit at a time over the years. They stop dancing, they pretend they don’t like sex anymore. They try to follow all the rules but being themselves is the most beautiful thing they could be. What I know is that our mass media programming is not conducive to building self-esteem. If you want to get programming that IS conducive to making you feel better about yourself, you will have to look outside the box. Literally.

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri ZampelliIn my book, From Sabotage to Success, I try to help people break free from self-imposed limitations. I’m no saint. I’m most like Suzette (Goldie Hawn) than anyone in the movie but for years I tried desperately to be Lavinia (the character portrayed by Susan Sarandon). I wanted “you” to love me more than I wanted to be happy. I thought if “you” loved me, I would be happy but now I’m realizing the only way I can be happy is when I’m being me.

Are you a Suzette (Goldie Hawn) trapped in a Lavinia (Susan Sarandon) body? Check it out:

P.S. The book my Dad bought me, the one I told you about a few blogs ago, I think that has something to do with helping me let go of self-condemnation too. So does reading A Course in Miracles. By the way, the book my dad bought me is called Victory Over Darkness. There are over 2 million copies in print. Hallelujah.

Deep Emotional Release Bodywork, When Talking Just Doesn’t Cut It

Monday, November 10th, 2008

James Hyman Deep Emotional Release BodyworkI used to be way more uptight than I am now. In fact, I was so anxious I almost thought I’d jump right out of my skin. I tried talking about it in therapy but it turns out, sometimes talking just isn’t enough. In fact, there is scientific brain research that shows how trauma is stored in the amygdala which is separate from the neo-cortex or “thinking” part of the brain. Therefore, talking is sometimes not enough to help heal trauma.

I’ve had plenty of trauma in my life and some of it happened before I was even able to speak. It turns out that just because you don’t remember traumatic events or just because you “grow up” doesn’t mean the impact of trauma goes away, the emotional impact of trauma can actually stay stored in your body and can be expressed in many non-verbal ways such as anxiety or physical illness.

Part of my healing has been my work with Los Angeles based Master healer/teacher/Shaman, James Hyman, founder of the Deep Emotional Release Bodywork and Quantum Healing.

James’ work takes you to the core of your issues to help you release the associated blocks held in the body and subconscious mind. His work helps balance the chakras, open up the higher mind centers, and takes you to a new level on your path of Spiritual Awakening. His work also brings about new insight and Self-awareness and a strong sense of internal well-being and self-esteem. After working with James you will feel lighter, as if a heavy burden has been lifted. Sometimes you’ll even have the direct physical experience of bliss and enlightenment.

Healing HandsI’m always telling my friends about James Hyman and many people I know have travelled to see him, driving over and hour each way, yet always glad they did.

This week I have a special announcement for my Long Beach and Orange County friends, James Hyman has offered to schedule a day of sessions in Long Beach, CA this Friday, November 14. There are only 5 openings left.

I know it’s short notice but I also know that if it’s meant to be, it will work out for whoever it’s supposed to work out for. The sessions will be held at the Everyday Zen Relaxation Studio located at 3740 Atlantic Blvd, Suite #201, in Long Beach, just north of the 405 freeway.

If you’re one of those people who’ve talked and talked in therapy but just never felt like you got anywhere, or if you feel burdened or stuck because of unresolved emotional isssues, this technique could help free you.

Some of you are my friends and you’ve already experienced a session with James. If you’re ready for a tune up or if you want to pass this information on to a friend, now would be a good time to do that. To schedule an appointment or ask questions, call (323) 684-6157 and ask for Barbara or e-mail emotionalrelease@gmail.com.

The Dynamics of Spiritual Mind Treatment by AhmanIf I had to name one person who’s influenced my spiritual beliefs the most and the most directly, it would be Rev. Ahman.

Ahman has a preacher-teacher style. He combines his intricate knowledge of the Bible with his practical understanding of A Course in Miracles. He is a master of communication and delivers a message that leads to mental healing.

Ahman will be the guest minister at Third Church of Religious Science in Leimert Park on Sunday, September 7. His topic is: “It Seems To Be Many” based on Mark, Chapter 5. Services begin at 10:30 a.m. at 4323 Leimert Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90008.

Ahman is the author of The Dynamics of Spiritual Mind Treatment, a book that describes the steps necessary to get the mind prepared for healing. To hear a sample of his presentation style, just click play on the player below and learn about the Mental Fast.

I Had NO Idea I Was Swimming in a Sea of Self-Criticism

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

The fish doesn’t know it’s swimming in water. We don’t realize we swim in energy. I was swimming in the energy of “I suck” most of my life and I had no idea. I needed hundreds of people to reflect something different back to me before I “got” who I actually am. I spent my entire life downgrading every aspect of my being. I hated my body, I criticized my creativity, I missed the joy of being surrounded by some very cool people and events most of my life. I was present in body but not in mind or spirit.

I was so busy replaying the stories and self-criticism that I picked up along the journey of my life that I could not be present. I could not hear your words of praise and I could not feel your love. I thought you were lying. I thought you were just trying to be nice. I had no idea you actually meant it and it could actually be true.

Sheri as a babySelf-criticism was my life. My mom has pumping self-hate through her bloodstream while I was in her womb. She was drinking Diet Coke and smoking cigarettes, trying not to gain weight. After I was born, she was starving herself to try and attain a weight of 105. One time the Department of Social Services came out to our apartment because the neighbors were concerned that I had been left alone. What happened is that my mom passed out due to starvation and I was left to fend for myself. How can a teen mom with this much self-hate possibly teach a child about self-love?

I think many women have become accustomed to self-criticism and it is a learned comfort zone. Self-hatred is a norm. Women who seem too confident or successful are subject to criticism, women who are “too thin” or “too curvy” are subject to body stereotypes. When a young, beautiful or successful woman threatens our security, we rip her to shreds, finding everything that’s “wrong” with her and pointing it out to whoever will listen. Let’s face it, many of us are not respecting ourselves or each other and it’s not helping a soul.

My life experiences range from working with at-risk youth, recovering addicts, battered women, ex-cons and foster youth to wealthy hypnosis clients. I was one of 5 White kids living on the Hupa Indian Reservation in California in 1976. I’ve attended and lead thousands of groups, meetings, classes and workshops and worked as a therapist with hundreds of clients.

I attended more than 20 schools and lived in even more neighborhoods. I wrote for the school newspaper and interviewed a variety of interesting people for articles. I’m one of those people who naturally evokes trust and as a result, strangers, friends, aquaintances, family members and clients have sat with me since I was a child and told me intimate details of their “story.”

Here’s what I know: we all want the same things and we all have the same feelings. We all want love. We all want to feel important. We all want to make a difference and live a life of purpose. We all have moments where we feel powerless, afraid and alone. The majority of us have regrets about the past that we rehearse consistently. The reason we don’t follow our dreams is that we don’t believe in ourselves. We have excuses and rationalizations and delay tactics and drama but none of them are real. It’s all a facade.

People have talked about the importance of love for decades yet the concept of self-love is practically shunned. As long as we hate ourselves, it will be difficult to make positive changes in our own lives or the lives of others. I created a CD that’s all about loving yourself as you are, it’s called Love Your Body, Love Yourself. I know it is powerful because I listened to a CD like this when I was in my 20’s and it made a huge difference. The repetition of all those positive thoughts helped me to do things I dreamt of doing such as writing a book, getting it published, going to college and becoming a college instructor. Because of my own personal experience, I am becoming more and more diligent about choosing my thoughts and energy than ever before.

From Sabotage to Success by Sheri ZampelliTake a moment to pause. Notice what your automatic thoughts are. Are they leading you in the direction in which you wish to go? If not, it is up to you to change it and it’s quite easy and possible to do if you want to. You simply create new habits by thinking new thoughts. My book, From Sabotage to Success can be a useful tool in helping you find thoughts that aren’t working for you and replacing them with thoughts that do. Another tool that’s been useful to me lately is watching You Can Heal Your Life on DVD. This movie really opened my eyes to a different perception of myself and how I interact in the world. Check it out if you believe in things like The Secret or Law of Attraction.

It Might Be Time for a Mental Fast

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

In a previous blog, I promised to post a powerful mp3 called Mental Fast by Rev. Ahman. Seeing Ahman live is an experience to be had. When he gets going, he reminds me a little bit of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This audio will stir your soul and help remind you of the power of your thoughts. Ahman encourages congregants to fast from thoughts that cause self-destruction and unhappiness. The audio is about 20 minutes long. Trust me on this one, the longer you listen, the better it gets. Hang in there, it’ll be worth it.

In this presentation, Ahman mentions his book, Spiritual Mind Treatment. You can get a copy at www.inspirationsministries.com

Ahman only speaks publicly in Los Angeles about 3-4 times a year. You will have two opportunities to see him in action on June 22. First off, he will be speaking at the Los Angeles Third Church of Religious Science in Liemert Park at 9 a.m. on the topic: “Show Us The Father.” Then, later that day he will be the M.C for the Second Annual Gospel Concert at 3 p.m., same location. I went last year and it was inspiring to say the least.

Address: 4323 Leimert Blvd. Los Angeles CA 90008
Details: 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning service
3:00 Gospel concert

Would be great to see you there.
