Galvanized Facebook Friday – 04-29-11 – Hip Hop, Healing, Dance and the Open Mic of Life

It's been about 4 weeks now that I've really been focusing on incorporating more music into my work and getting in touch with my own voice and what I want to communicate to the world and how. As soon as I got clear on that desire, I've been meeting people and finding out about events and organizations that can help me move closer to a life filled with things I am passionate about and interested in. Last Thursday, when I was doing open mic at Long Beach City College I ran into a former co-worker from Starview known as J.Walker the poet and/or AM570poet. He does free-style rhymes live on The Loose Cannons Show and told me about an event titled Hip Hop for Social Change which was happening right on the Long Beach City College campus. I went and I reconnected with students and artists in Long Beach who want to serve their community through art and music. Yesterday I got in touch with Marisol Ibanez, one of the event organizers. We had a great talk and I learned about an organization called Alternative Intervention Models, a non-profit corporation founded by Leila Steinberg to benefit at-risk youth using the power of arts and athletics.  I'm looking forward to learning more and getting involved in workshops that use creativity and music to create healing and transformation. In the meantime, as a side benefit of attending this event, Cynthia Lamb and I started a conversation about a workshop that would be geared toward healing and would include dance and music. Cynthia hosts an amazing Goddess Dance workshop that I've had the joy of attending. Dance is such a great way to get in touch with your inner rhythm. What I like about doing a dance workshop with Cynthia is that she's open to the idea of having some eclectic music in the class. We both agree on one thing, the music doesn't have to be sold in the metaphysical section of the store in order to be "healing". In fact, I am healed to the core each time I listen to and dance to Chase and Status. So, I sent Cynthia home with three CD's: Chase and Status : No More Idols Party Ben - 2007 Booty Dance Mix Ready to Go Workout Playlist (AKA "The Playlist That Got Me Through the Honolulu Marathon") If Cynthia and I can do some sort of Goddess/Warrior dance-off, rock out healing session together it would be as though heaven and earth had indeed met and embraced in a romantic kiss.  Stay tuned for updates on events that will incorporate music, healing, sexuality, femininity and fun.  Subscribe to iamgalvanized.com or "like" our Facebook page to stay in the loop.

Galvanized Facebook Friday 04-22-11 Rapper’s Delight, Being a Girl and Facing Fear

Last week I said I was going to be open to incorporating sex and sexiness into my overall message. I also have been on a long run of incorporating music into my life and career and facing every fear head on, especially in regards to my public speaking and daring to use my own authentic voice when I communicate. Well, I guess you could say I "killed three birds with one stone" because last night at Long Beach City College, I took all of my Stress Management students to open mic night and then performed in front of them and about 50 other people. There were close to 100 people there. In 5 minutes, I faced too many fears to name and what I know is that I have just become more galvanized. Here's a video of the performance. It's titled "That's What Girls Do" and it's my way of speaking out about authenticity, being a strong girl/woman, "don't judge a book by it's cover", stop the violence, have fun and dance...among other things. I do some rapping in the piece, mainly from Rapper's Delight by Sugar Hill Gang. I also sing some Salt-n-Pepa, Let's Talk about Sex. I hope it helps you get galvanized. If it does, please share it with a friend. I'm looking for members to join my galvanized gang. It's much funner to dance with others.

Urban Voodoo: Hip-Hop and Spoken Word to Maximize Your Resources

UrbanVoodooQuantcast UrbanVoodoo strikes a blow at the core of the social order with his dope beats and hard hitting lyrics. He's currently working on a new album called Mercury Reign and has four tracks ready to go. Maximize your Resources is a gritty album filled with conscious messages that will convince you that it's best to follow your first mind. UrbanVoodoo's roots were established in Inglewood, California and New Orleans, Louisiana "where the cultural norms are as different as Denmark and Hamburg are to each other, even though the two countries are both European". He currently resides in Long Beach, California and actively helps students at Long Beach City College to find their voice through spoken word. UrbanVoodoo combines two distinct ideas: Urban in terms of the inner city which bred his style and Magic which the sound is designed to create. Donna Robinson at The Examiner says "Urban Voodoo's Creole culture still permeates in his performance…that of Spicy truth that burns in gestation. His distinct vibe can be felt due to being raised in the inner-city where he shows his urban nature." To hear some of Voodoo's tunes, click on the player below or go to Reverbnation. You can also get downloads and hear samples of Urban Voodoo on Bandcamp.com or, you can Buy UrbanVoodoo on iTunes. UrbanVoodoo
