‘Funkin’ Long Beach Sundown Walk’ Playlist

Monday, August 31st, 2009

I just walked in the door after an hour long walk on the beach. It was sundown and Long Beachians were buzzing around on the boardwalk staying active and fit. They were on skates, they were on bikes, they were on foot. Some were in pairs, girlfriends keeping each other up to date on the latest, a father and his son riding bikes.

Some were alone, just them and their iPod. I was in the latter category of people, rocking out to my favorite tunes and taking in the scenery as if I was watching a movie.

My ‘bring it on home’ song was Dazz by Brick (video here), one of my favorite funk songs, a song I did not hear at the Long Beach Funk Fest this weekend.itunes_icon

Here are the other songs that laid the soundtrack for a spectacular, energizing walk in Long Beach. (All links go to iTunes, enjoy).

Chronic Generation by Chron Gen
Sexy Hypnotist by Luscious Jackson
TV Baby by Magazine
Bud (Rootless Mix) by Salt Peter
I Don’t Wanna be Learned – I Don’t Wanna be Tamed by the Ramones

If you think your music matches my style. I want to hear from you.

‘Get off the Treadmill Feeling Pumped Up’ Playlist

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

I’ve discovered that if I want to make exercise a healthy habit, it must be fun. One of the ways I fun it up is to listen to music that rocks my body and soul. This is the iPod playlist I enjoyed tonight, on my treadmill, rockin’ to the beat. Warning, if you’re over 40 or easily disturbed by loud music with a solid beat, click away from this page while you can. If you’re under 40 or have a young mind, click away and get ready to rock! (All links go to iTunes).

Speaking of fun, here’s a video of someone who hasn’t quite mastered the art of dancing on the treadmill at high speeds. Watch his flip flops go flyin’ at the end. Then, once you’re done laughing, get on the treadmill and have fun. Stay safe!

Warrior Woman Workout Playlist

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated for your workout. Especially if you feel bad about your body or you’re in boring surroundings. I have a cure for you: The Warrior Woman Workout Playlist.

I’m warning you, this music is extremely high-energy and you will probably notice a difference in your body right away as you listen. Rather than drag your body unwillingly and lethargically through your 30 minute workout, why not glide like a gazelle or command your space like a warrior (or warrior princess).

This playlist will help set the tone for just that type of workout. I was on the treadmill at 3.0-5.0 miles for about 42 minutes with these tunes and I had a rockin’ good time. The majority of the time I was jogging, I only used the fast walk for warm up and cool down. All links go to iTunes.

Apple iTunes

Propellerheads Decksanddrumsandrockandroll I started off with On Her Majesty’s Secret Service by Propellerheads. This really set the tone for feelin’ a little James Bond meets Samantha Stevens. I was ready to raise the roof after this one. The song is 9:20 so it’s almost ten minutes of total starpower. Here are the songs that followed. I was in the zone!

Demons by Fatboy Slim

In Britain by Red Alert

Bodhisattva Vow by Beastie Boys

You’ll Never Change Me by Chron Gen

Drop That Thing by Groove Armada

Teenage Kicks by The Undertones

Annalisa by Public Image Ltd.

Cool down song:
Believe it or not, Playpen by Social Distortion. This band is kinda “slow/fast” I imagined one of the slow mosh pits I used to see develop at their live shows.

Laugh Tour Caught on Tape – T.O.C. and Gal VanIZed Spread Laughter in Belmont Shore

Friday, October 10th, 2008

I couple of days ago I wrote a blog and posted photos from our Laugh Tour; a day in Belmont Shore posting and passing out signs that say “Laugh”. We have no agenda. We aren’t selling anything. We just know that laughter is contagious and we wanted to spread a little of it around. Heck, maybe it’s even selfish, you laugh, we laugh, we all feel good. What’s wrong with that?

We spoke to and laughed with a lot of people on this day. Only a tiny portion is caught on tape but we hope you’ll enjoy it. A couple of highlights: at 51 seconds, that’s Orange County Roller Girl boodeefull #88 that we’re talking to. At 1:41 you’ll see Fingerprint’s music store owner Rand and his distributor friend. We talked to them for a couple of minutes off camera about University by the Sea, a downtown Long Beach cultural event that included a full day of live music. Fingerprint’s had it’s own stage all day. He said the day went well.

As you’ll notice, I have my iPod on at all times. Music carries me through so many of the highlights of my life. I like to associate music with good times because then when I listen to the song the next time, it brings back good memories. So, I’m going to post my iPod playlist for this Laugh Tour day. Subscribe to the blog if you want to get playlists on an ongoing basis.

Sometimes Simplicity Can Be Sweet

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Starbucks Berry Freeze drinkAs a result of many economic forces, including my past compulsion to purchase new clothes at a whim, I have had to seriously curtail my spending.

I’m living a frugal life right now.

This has forced me to find joy in simplicity. If I want to enjoy my life, I have to find wonder and awe in simple things like caterpillars, butterflies and any number of things that were overwhelmingly exciting in childhood. And on this day in particular, I succeeded in doing such.

Materials required: Dog, leash, iPod, great music, Fight Crew t-Shirt, Jordache Jeans, $5 gift certificate to Starbucks and a few bucks in my pocket.

Hali is happyMusic sets the tone.

As I put in my earbuds, slam the front gate and hit play on my iPod, this is what I hear (all links go to iTunes or MySpace where you can preview/buy these songs): Bung by Midfield General off Sonic Velocity – Drum N’ Bass & Electronic. Trust me, this gets me off to a great start on my trip to Starbucks which is really an excuse to get out of the house, walk the dog and hope that she gets tired enough that she will leave me alone in the afternoon.

itunes logoThe next set of songs took me from my front gate, up Redondo Ave., past 3rd street and all the way to Starbucks on 7th and Redondo.

Groove Holmes by The Beastie Boys off The IN Sound From Way Down, 19.5 by LTJ Bukem & Peshay off The Best in Drum and Bass, No Thang On Me by Snoop Dogg Feat. B off R&G (Rhythm & Gangsters), Partymadchen Gefoltert by Stereo Total off Do The Bambi, Bring It by Peshay off Fuzion, Pow by The Beastie Boys off The IN Sound From Way Out.

After I found a chair to tie the dog to, I head into Starbucks. Just then, Madness by Killing Joke off What’s This For! came on. Even though I know some people will think I’m rude for ordering with my headphones on, I don’t care. As I ordered, I asked myself, “Am I talking too loud or not loud enough?” Then I thought to myself, “What do I care if the barista likes me or not?”

Dead Kennedy\'s Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death I go outside and sit on the cushy outdoor furniture in the breezeway. I crank up my iPod, and eat my sandwich. Here’s what played in my ears as I chewed.

Sajanna by Badmarsh & Shri off Signs and Holiday in Cambodia by Dead Kennedys off Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death.

Right about now, I’m feeling strong, I feel like I’m reconnecting with my youth. I’ve had a breakthrough moment. For the first time in 20+ years I swear to God I heard the lyrics more clearly than ever. Jello Biafra utters the words “Right Guard will not help you here” right after he says, “It’s time to taste, what you most fear”. I never realized that is what he said. Fascinating.Right Guard Deodorant

I’m feeling Gal VanIZed big time now. I am grooving to tunes like All Rights Reversed (featuring Klaxons) by Chemical Brothers off We Are the Night and We Shall Overcome by Mahalia Jackson.

I’m refelecting and thinking: Oh Yeah, as I hear the empowering words of Shining Star by Earth, Wind and Fire and sit on the Starbucks patio furniture, chillin’ with the dog.

More cool songs commence: Oh Yeah by Stereo Total off of Juke-Box-Alarm, followed by Since I’ve Been Loving You by Led Zeppelin. Meanwhile, I’m sippin’ a sour/sweet fruit smoothy from Starbucks. It’s a berry/grapefruit italian iced blend and it tastes good. In fact, after my first sip I had a serious brain freeze. I would recommend that you sip slowly to avoid that experience.

After leisurely chewing the last bite of my Turkey Avocado sandwich, I get the dog and start walking as I hear these tunes: Distortion by Monkey Fist off Between the Lines and Finger Lickin’ Good by Beastie Boys.

I finished off the walk and came in the front door listening to The Gentle Rain (RJD2 Remix) by Astrud Gilberto off Verve Remixed 3.

This great little getaway cost me about $3.65 and it was well worth every penny. I guess if you count the cost of songs at 99 cents a download, it’s really $20.48 but the great thing about my music is that I can play it over and over again, anywhere I want for the rest of my life. To me, music is important and valuable so the investment is miniscual compared to the price of discontent and boredom.

Punk Rock Playlist Suitable for an Afternoon Bike Ride in Long Beach

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

The 50 ft woman attacked Barbie and stole some of her blingAnother day of gorgeous weather in Long Beach California. A bike ride is a way to get some exercise. With good music on the iPod, it feels like going outside to play.

itunes logoHere’s my playlist for this ride. All links go to iTunes or MySpace as noted.

Intelligent Guy by the Butthole Surfers (didn’t see it on iTunes but you can check out their MySpace page)

Intro by Big Boi off Speakerboxxx

City of Fun by Come off Volume 08

Rap is Really Changing by Mucho Macho off The Limehouse Link

Harmony in My Head by the Buzzcocks off Singles Going Steady

Purity by Monkey Fist off Between The Lines. I have chatted back and forth across the Pond with these fellows on MySpace for a couple of years. I love their song Take It (you can hear it on the Monkey Fist MySpace profile). They keep telling me they’ve got something new coming out but I haven’t heard it yet. They are not on iTunes. Imagine, probably thousands, perhaps millions of bands are not.

She’s a Woman by the Beatles off Past Masters – Volume 1 (couldn’t find it on iTunes)

Breakaway by Basement Jaxx of Rooty (I love this entire CD)

She’s Lost Control by Joy Division off Substance 1977-1980

Playlist for Gal VanIZed Skating

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Gal VanIZed at Fresh Meat practiceWhen something is galvanized, it is reinforced and powerful. The following songs made it easy for me to get in the zone. Easy to crouch down low and thrust my legs out to each side of me while my arms pumped back and forth in the opposite direction.

I wound down from my skating workout listening to Get a Shot of the Refrigerator by Stereolab off of Fab Four Suture. My cool down consisted of the “drunken sailor” drill all the way down First Street and up Orizaba to Broadway. Drunken sailor is when you cross one leg over the other and try to keep moving forward without falling down.

Prior to cool down I skated and danced my little heart out on the Long Beach Boardwalk listening to the following tunes: (all links go to iTunes)

itunes logoBanquet by Bloc Party off of Promo Only Canada Modern Rock Radio
Tuning In by Groove Armada off of Love Box [UK]
Home of the Brave by Naked Raygun off of All Rise
Halfway Home (feat. Blackalicious) by DJ Shadow off In Tune and On Time
Potential Rapist by Naked Raygun off Basement Screams
Looking Down the Barrell of a Gun by The Beastie Boys of of Paul’s Boutique

One Day After Independence, I Get My iPod, Jump on My Bike and Ride

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

The 50 ft woman attacked Barbie and stole some of her blingThis past week has had some drama but yesterday, Independence Day in USA, was a day for celebrating freedom. Freedom from bad choices, mistaken judgments and lack of compassion. Freedom to choose love and peace over chaos and selfishness.

The best way I’ve found to liberate my mind and my body, is to move to music. A good, exhiliarting workout makes me feel energetic and renews my creativity. Many times I put my iPod on shuffle just to see what songs come up. I skip over the songs that don’t inspire me and only play the tunes that make me want to peddle hard and soar through the air like a super-heroine on wheels.

Here are the songs that survived the cut today and made me feel like a 7-year-old out for a bike ride while the parents were at home working, drinking or fighting.

itunes logoLinks go to iTunes

The Hunter by Blue Cheer off of OutsideInside
Anti-Pop by Kommunity FK off of The Vision and the Voice
I Used to Love H.E.R. (Look of Love Remix) by Common feat. J Dilla off Statik Selektah and Q-Tip the Look of Love is a rockin’ tune.
The Fall of Because by Killing Joke off What’s This For

When Spybreak! (Propeller Heads off Decksanddrumsandrockandroll) came on, I was so Gal VanIZed that I stood up and peddled as fast as I could. Then, I pushed my quads hard as I whizzed past all walkers and slow bike riders.

Other songs include:
The Next Big Chill (Edit) by Beat Pharmacy off Astralwerks 1999 v.2
Song For Shelter by Fatboy Slim off Halfway Between the Gutter and the Stars

As I bring my bike inside the house, I hear Save Our Soul by Groove Armada off of Soundboy Rock. The music is so motivating that I decide I’m not done exercising. I get out my rebounder/trampoline and jump up and down and side to side to the beat of the music. I love the way my heart starts pumping and my muscles feel stronger and more alive.

The beginning bars of Procol Harum, About to Die tell me it’s time for a break. That’s when I open a cold one and sit down to blog.

Playlist to Endure a Brutal Workout

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

I’m telling you, Jaiya Figueras is a nice guy but he doesn’t hold back on unleashing a little brutality here and there during our Bluff Park workouts. Although I’m not in the video on this page, you can go to the Your Next Victory Website to see me working out in all my pinkness.

Jaiya is the kind of guy who will smile wide and give you a high five while encouraging you to do one more push up, run a little faster or squat a little lower. He will not take no for an answer and he laughs off most excuses for lack of performance then says, “keep going.”

I love Jaiya and what his workouts do for my body and mind but sometimes I need a little music to help me endure and to take my mind off the fact that I’m just about ready to belch, throw up or give up.

Here are the songs I listened to today while we did things like moutain climbers, Spiderman crawls, tree hand stands and tug-of-war.

Links go to iTunes

Assasinator by Meat Beat Manifesto off of Subliminal Sandwich
Bang for the Buck by Ugly Duckling off of Bang for the Buck
Gear by Naked Raygun off of Throb Throb

Think by James Brown off CD of JB II
Rhythm Sticks by Blackalicious off of The Craft
Dutchmen by Rudimentary Peni off Death Church

The Suit by Public Image Ltd. off of Second Edition
That’s What You Always Say by the Dream Syndicate off of The Days of Wine and Roses
Red Alert by Squad off of Punk Rock Rarities
Line Up by Elastica off of the Mallrats soundtrack
Planet Rock (Swordfish Mix) by Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force off of the Swordfish soundtrack
All Lifestyles by The Beastie Boys off of To the 5 Boroughs
My Boy Lollipop by Millie Small off of AM Gold – Mid 60’s
Climax (Girl Shit) by Slum Village off of Fantastic Volume 2
It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop by the Dead Prez of off Let’s Get Free
Stick ‘Em Up by the Beastie Boys off Dr. Numbers Presents Still Ill
Root Down by the Beastie Boys off of Root Down
Transition by The Beastie Boys off of The IN Sound from Way Out
No Remorse (I Wanna Die) by Slayer and Atari Teen off of the Spawn soundtrack

Some of these songs I listened to while I sat in a camp chair under an awning for 20 minutes or so, just trying to get my bearings. Even though the workouts are brutal, the music transports me back to the days when I rode my bike everywhere (because I didn’t have a car) and then went to shows at night and slammed/danced to music until the wee hours of the morning. When I’m in that mode, working out is a privledge and a joy, not a chore.

I look forward to becoming stronger and more agile as time progresses. This is definitely a shift from the “I’m too old for this” thoughts I had when I first started these intense workouts. In fact, one of the best benefits of working out with Jaiya is the realization that my limiting, fearful thoughts are nothing more than mental chatter because the truth is, I can do it and I’m getting better all the time.

Riding my Pink Beach Cruiser in Long Beach, Listenin’ to my iPod

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

Long Beach bike path ride listening to iPodToday, when I was on my way out for a bike ride, my husband (rinkrat) seized the opportunity to test his new camera equipment. I didn’t mind modeling at all because I’ve been wanting to document how cool bike riding can be and I love to share my iPod playlists with you. I listened to some good tunes on my ride and I’ll list them all below.

Long Beach bike pathThere were a lot of people on the bike path today. I cruised through a group of 30-40 year old hipsters with tattoos. I tried to capture it on my cell phone camera but there really is nothing like being there, rocking out to some seriously cool music, feeling the wind on your face and the vibration of the bike wheels, the bike seat and the rhythm of the wheels spinning in circles. If you use your imagination, it’s kinda like slamming in the pit or doing roller derby. I mean, it can be, if you want it to be.

Give it a try, get on your bike, listen to your favorite tunes and put a smile on your face. That’s the difference between working out on machines like a rat in a cage and being a free spirit with a free body. Exercise is invigorating and empowering and it takes little or no equipment to get the benefits of increasing your heart rate and building your muscles.

Playlist for this Sunday Afternoon bike ride:

Its pretty hard to sit still when you listen to stuff like this (links go to iTunes):

Price of Gas by Bloc Party off Silent Alarm (Isn’t the price of gas on everyone’s mind?)
Helicopter (Sheriff Whitey Mix) by Bloc Party off So Here We Are
Dis Mx Collapsed Lung off Volume II
Bizarre Love Triangle (Shep Pettibone remix) by New Order
You Send Me by Sam Cooke off The Man Who Invented Soul – Disc 1
Everything’s Gone Green by New Order
The Great Prentender by Brian Eno off Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy. This is musical genius. Art with sound. Suitable and recommended for all ages.
Soul Sauce (Fila Brazilla Remix) by Cal Tjader off Verve Remixed 2
Track 13 by A Tribe Called Quest – Sometimes, my husband gets me this music and it doesn’t have names on it but I LOVE A Tribe Called Quest and I will listen to any version of any song anytime
Ended the ride with Slag by Fx off Killed by Death #100 (couldn’t find it on iTunes).

Grooving to music on the ipodThis photo captures the feeling I enjoy when I listen to good music and stay in the zone. When I feel like this, life is fun, easy and inspired and I am Gal VanIZed.
