Song of the Week – 9-1-09 – The Uprising by Muse
Tuesday, September 1st, 2009
Watch/Listen on YouTube.
Will you be victorious or will the paranoia pull you in?
Lyrics for Uprising by Muse
The paranoia is in bloom, the PR
The transmissions will resume
They'll try to push drugs
Keep us all dumbed down and hope that
We will never see the truth around
Another promise, another scene, another
A package not to keep us trapped in greed
With all the green belts wrapped around our minds
And endless red tape to keep the truth confined
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
Interchanging mind control
Come let the revolution take it's toll if you could
Flick the switch and open your third eye, you'd see that
We should never be afraid to die
Rise up and take the power back, it's time that
The fat cats had a heart attack, you know that
Their time is coming to an end
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious
They will not force us
They will stop degrading us
They will not control us
We will be victorious

Song of the Week – 2-24-09 – Spaceman by The Killers
Tuesday, February 24th, 2009
This week's song will have you questioning your perception. I couldn't embed the video here because of YouTube restrictions, but you can watch the video on YouTube. It's pretty cool. The sound reminds me of 80's UK pop like The Cure, New Order or Depeche Mode.

Here are the lyrics. Notice how many times he says "It's all in your mind?":
oh oh oh oh oh oh oooah x4
It started with a low light,
Next thing I knew they ripped me from my bed;
And then they took my blood type,
It left a strange impression in my head.
You know that I was hoping,
That I could leave this star-crossed world behind;
But when they cut me open,
I guess that changed my mind.
And you know I might
Have just flown too far from the floor this time,
'cause they calling me by my name
And the zipping white light beams
disregards the bombs and satellites
That was the turning point;
That was one lonely night
The song maker says, "It ain't so bad"
The dream maker's going make you mad
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
Its all in your mind"
Well now I'm back at home, and-
I'm looking forward to this life I live;
You know its gonna haunt me,
So hesitation to this life I give.
You think you might cross over,
You're caught between the devil and the deep blue sea;
You better look it over,
Before you make that leap
And you know I'm fine,
but I hear those voices at night sometimes-
they justify my claim,
and the public don't dwell my transmission
'cause it wasn't televised
But, it was the turning point,
Oh what a lonely night
The song maker says, "It ain't so bad"
The dream maker's going make you mad;
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
Its all in your mind"
The song maker says, "It ain't so bad"
The dream maker's going make you mad;
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
Its all in your mind"
My global position systems are vocally addressed;
They say the Nile used to run from east to west,
They say the Nile used to run - from east to west.
And you know I'm fine,
but I hear those voices at night,
sometimes
The song maker says, "It ain't so bad"
The dream maker's going make you mad;
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
Its all in your mind"
The song maker says, "It ain't so bad"
The dream maker's going make you mad;
The spaceman says, "Everybody look down
Its all in your mind"
It's all in my mi-i-ind,
It's all in my mind...
It's all in my mind...
It's all in my mind...
It's all in my mind
oh oh oh oh oh oh oooah x8

Lost lyrics by Coldplay featuring Jay Z
Just because I'm losing
Doesn't mean I'm lost
Doesn't mean I'll stop
Doesn't mean I'm across
Just because I'm hurting
Doesn't mean I'm hurt
Doesn't mean I didn't get what I deserved
No better and no worse
I just got lost
Every river that I tried to cross
Every door I ever tried was locked
Oh and I'm just waiting 'til the shine wears off
You might be a big fish
In a little pond
Doesn't mean you've won
'Cause along may come
A bigger one

And you'll be lost
Every river that you tried to cross
Every gun you ever held went off
Oh and I'm just waiting until the firing stopped
Oh and I'm just waiting 'til the shine wears off
[Jay-Z]
Aha, I gotcha, uh...
With the same sword they knight you, they gon' good night you with
Shit, that's only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
See Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas
See Caesar, see Brutus, see success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified
Media meddles, niggaz sue you, you settle
Every step you take, they remind you you're ghetto
So it's tough being Bobby Brown
To be Bobby then, you have to be Bobby now
And the question is, "Is to have had and lost
Better than not having at all?"
Because I'm...
Oh and I'm, just waiting 'til the shine wears off
Oh and I'm, just waiting 'til the shine wears off

Song of the Week – 1-27-09 – 665 1/2 by Rosemary’s Billygoat
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009
Who knew you could have a sense of humor about Satan? Well, Rosemary's Billygoat doesn't seem to take the devil too seriously at all. Watch the video and read the lyrics and just see if 665 1/2 won't make you laugh. I dare you.
Here's a little sample of the lyrics:
Well ever since I was born,
I've been growing horns
I eat Christians for breakfast
Pentacostals for lunch
and then you come along
and I got me a hunch
you think you're evil
don't make me laugh
At best, you're a 665 1/2
You can listen to the studio version of the song here:
This band was the halftime entertainment at the Saturday Roller Derby bout at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles. Michael Zampelli was there to document the evening on behalf of LAist.com.

Mr. Lif to Release “I Heard it Today”
Wednesday, January 14th, 2009
Mr. Lif isn't afraid to create an album that speaks brazenly about current political issues. He addresses the fear, paranoia, and angst resulting from the collapse of the U.S. economy. He raps about the bailout bill, self hatred in the Black community, and the housing crisis.
Lif takes these negatives and uses them as a impetus to search for a healthier way of life. He wants to use his realizations as a way to achieve freedom and peace of mind through the power of the imagination. In a true "change starts with you" move, Lif will self-release his album on his own label, Bloodbot Tactical Enterprises. Look for it on April 21, 2009. For now, you can check him out on MySpace or listen to his track Arise right here on this page.

No Matter What by T.I.
Monday, December 29th, 2008
The lyrics in the hook of No Matter What by T.I. set the spirit of the music video.
(Hook)
I ain't dead (nah) I ain't done (nah)
I ain't scared (of what?), I ain't run (from Who?)
But still I stand (yeah)
No matter what pimpin'
here I am (Yeah)
No matter What

Remember I ain't break (never), I ain't fold (never)
They hate me more (so?)
Yeah I know (Ha, Ha)
Here I go (Yeah)
No matter what shawty,
here I go
No matter what shawty
(See the entire lyrics here)
I think T.I. owns his words completely in this video. He is very convincing and inspiring, rising above limitation and staying firm to his convictions. It's a practice we can all benefit from, whether a rapper, punker, student, teacher or world leader.
