The song of the week is brought to you by Michael Zampelli, former owner of Southern California punk rock icon, Zed Records. For almost 30 years, this mecca of punk and alternative music kept Southern California enthusiasts adequately supplied with unique, original and innovative music.
Currently, Zampelli manages a hockey fan message boards at www.letsgokings.com with thousands of subscribers. He takes photos for the LAist and the LA Derby Dolls. Each week he will contribute a song with a theme, a message and a beat. Enjoy and stay tuned.
Song six on the countdown was released 30 years ago but thanks to YouTube, this year I experienced the song in a new way. I used to listen to PiL on my walkman and I always felt energized. Sometimes I even danced around when I heard it. But it never occurred to me that groups of young people would be going wild about it on American Banstand.
John Lydon sure did know how to activate a crowd and watching him in action makes it worth bringing this song out of the vault.
Between Christmas Eve and New Years Eve I will post my top eight favorite songs of the year. These tunes were selected from the 51 songs of the week that were submitted by Michael Zampelli during 2009.
Stay tuned because very soon I will release Songs to Galvanize Your Mind – A List of Songs for Strong Minds with and a Strong Purpose.
I was listening to XMU on Sirius/XM today and this song just caught my ear. I wanted to hear it again so why not share while I’m at it. (Listen on YouTube).
I love the unique mix, the simplicity and the lyrics, especially “don’t fight the darkness bring the light and darkness disappears.”
Lately I’ve had a few separate conversations with women about the man in their lives. In one way or another, each woman said something to the effect of, “why is it always me that has to change first? Why doesn’t he ever have to do anything?”
I know the answer to both of those questions based on lots of experience and trial and error and I’ve asked these same questions to my female companions along the way. The easiest answer I can give is this: If you want to be happy and you’re not, it’s up to you to do something to change it. If that sounds harsh, try this: take all the emotional history out of the equation. Read each of the following words very slowly and let it sink in. Avoid the tendency to get defensive.
If-YOU-want-to-be-happy-and-you’re-not-it’s-up-to-YOU-to-do-something-to-change-it. This is simply a routine statement like, if you want a tuna sandwich, you’ll have to do something to get it. If you want to go to the movies, you’ll have to take steps to make it happen.
For some reason in relationships we want the other person to change first. If you have two stubborn, inmature people both refusing to change first, your relationship will be in a stinky stalemate for way too long (trust me, I know). Here are a few different ways to look at it.
1. Going first is cool. Being the leader can kick ass sometimes.
2. Maybe he is the one choosing love and you should follow his lead.
3. If the stuff about the law of attraction is true and Joy and Love are attracters but hate and anger are repellents, why on earth would you want to stay in hate and anger when all it does is keep you from what you want and you and only you can change it?
It took a really long time for me to get this. I guess I’ll have to raise my hand for the category of stubborn and immature.
After watching the Presidential Inauguration and the We Are One concert, after hearing powerful speeches and inspiring songs about “doing your part” I figure the least I can do is love the ones I’m with. Seems pretty minute in comparison to running the country in turbulent times.
Stress takes all the joy out of life. If you’ve got a lot of stress and it’s bogging you down, hypnosis can help. Hypnosis is about relaxing, chillin’ and creating an inner reality that helps you feel positive. When you change your inner world, the outer world changes too….or at least your perception of it does.
I’ll be doing a free hypnosis workshop in Long Beach on March 3 where you can learn more. For details and a downloadable flier, click here.
Dread Zeppelin lead man Jah Paul Jo sent a message to his friends on My Space. It said a few things that I thought some of you would like to know.
**Dread Zeppelin is celebrating their 20th Anniversary in 2009
**The day of the celebration just so happens to coincide with “The Kings” birthday, January 8
**There’s gonna be a new DVD and several 20th Anniversary CDs and swag releases in 2009. You can pre-order the first DVD at a special discount price on their new website, dreadzeppelin.tv.
**They are looking for stories from people who saw them between 1989 and 1995.
Well, if you’ve got a story, like I do, you might want to go to their MySpace page and add them as a friend.
My story is, I saw them at an N.A. (Narcotics Anonymous) dance in Stanton CA, in 1989. They were so much fun. The singer dresses and acts just like Elvis Presley while gyrating his hips and singing Led Zeppelin classics like Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven. In my memory, they were one of the first bands to ever do the whole “lounge music meets rock and roll” thing and they do it very well.
I will never forget the show itself. The singer was draped in several white scarves (as in torn strips of sheet) around his neck. Every once in a while, he’d whip one off from around his neck and swing it around in circles. The women were supposed to swoon. I did. And he threw the scarf into the audience. I held it like a sacred cloth and even took it home and saved it for a little while.
This video probably best represents what I experienced. If you have a Dread Zeppelin story, leave a comment here or go over to their MySpace page and add them as a friend.
This week’s song is by Strawberry Switchblade. The video of Since Yesterday is sure to give you an 80’s flashback feeling. If you liked Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cindy Lauper or Bow Wow Wow, you’ll love singers Jill Bryson and Rose McDowall.
Strawberry Switchblade is not available on iTunes
Lyrics to Since Yesterday by Strawberry Switchblade:
Just close your eyes and then remember
The thoughts you’ve locked away
When tomorrow comes you’ll wish
You had today
And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday
If you’re still there when it’s all over
I’m scared I’ll have to say
That a part of you has gone
Since yesterday
And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday
La La La La…
Well, maybe this could be the ending
with nothing left of you
A hundred wishes couldn’t say
I don’t want to
And as we sit here alone
Looking for a reason to go on
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are our thoughts of yesterday
La La La La…
It’s so clear that all we have now
Are thoughts of yesterday

In Victimology class we talk about how the actions of one person impacts many. This video is a perfect example. It would be tempting and common to look at this video and get caught in the drama. It would be easy to judge it and analyze it.
I challenge you to do this: notice, that in a crowd of thousands, only one punk guy caused the whole problem. One guy put a halt to a concert and created negative vibes for thousands of people. Sometimes we forget to look at the big picture because we are zeroed in on the drama. We fail to realize how much we have in common, how powerful unity could be. Please take a moment to consider it. Just for laughs
Sometimes electricity moves through the body so fast that all you can do is Jerk It Out. This jazzy tune will put a pep in your step and a sparkle in your smile.
…or, watch The Jerk It Out YouTube video featuring The Caesars:
Here are the song lyrics for Jerk it Out by The Caesars
Wind me up
put me down
start me off and watch me go
I’ll be running circles around you sooner than you know
A little off center
and i’m out of tune
just kickin this can along the avenue
But i’m alright
coz it’s easy once you know how it’s done
you can’t stop now
it’s already begun
you feel it
running through your bones
and you jerk it out
jerk it out
shut up
hush your mouth
can’t you hear you talk too loud?
No I can’t hear nothing ’cause I got my head up in the clouds
I bite off anything that I can chew
I’m chasing cars up and down the avenue
But that’s ok
coz it’s easy once you know how it’s done
you can’t stop now
it’s already begun
you feel it
running through your bones
and you jerk it out
jerk it out
